Massive winter storm set to slam Northeast

Massive winter storm set to slam Northeast

(Worthy News) – After dumping rare snowfall on parts of the southeastern coast, a powerful winter storm is set to hammer the Northeast with up to 12 inches of snow and strong winds. By the end of this week, parts of the Northeast will be colder than Mars.

Thirteen states from South Carolina to Maine are under a winter storm warning as a massive bombogenesis begins wreaking havoc Thursday. Forecasters say the Northeast states will see threatening hurricane-force winter wind gusts and blinding snow.

The bombogenesis — an area of rapidly declining low pressure — will result in what’s known as a “bomb cyclone,” which happens when a cyclone has a big drop in atmospheric pressure over a short period of time.

Bomb cyclones can draw colder air in from the North, which can blast areas in the northern hemisphere with icy temperatures. [ Source: Local 10 News (Read More…) ]

Christians killed globally for faith at Christmas

Christians killed globally for faith at Christmas

(Worthy News) – The deaths of nearly 150 Christians have been reported in targeted attacks on religious minorities in Nigeria, Cairo and India during the 2017 Christmas season, according to various reports from religious liberty advocates and news agencies.

Among the latest attacks, unidentified assailants killed between 14 and 16 Christians leaving a midnight New Year’s Eve service Jan. 1 in Omuku town in Rivers State, Nigeria, the BBC and Nigerian Independent news reported Jan. 2. The gunmen fired at random and at close range, according to police who said the violence might have been related to rivalry among gangs in Nigeria’s oil-producing regions in the Middle Belt.

Also in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, suspected Fulani herdsmen killed four Christians and injured 10 others during a celebration two days before Christmas in the Southern Kaduna village of Nimdem, religious freedom advocate International Christian Concern (ICC) reported Dec. 26, 2017. The gunmen attacked around 10 p.m. on Dec. 23, local pastor Gideon Mutum told ICC, “during an interdenominational carol that comes every Christmas with Bible quiz, drama, songs and preaching.” It was not clear whether the attack occurred inside a church building. Hindu Radicals Launch at Least 23 Attacks during 2017 Christmas Season in India

Hindu Radicals Launch at Least 23 Attacks during 2017 Christmas Season in India

(Worthy News) – International Christian Concern (ICC) has learned that at least 23 religiously-motivated attacks took place during the 2017 Christmas season, including attacks on carolers and open threats against Christian celebrations. The attacks have led to several Christians’ hospitalization and imprisonment. The persecution created such fear among the Christian community that many Christians did not celebrate Christmas this year.

On December 19, an attack occurred in Rajasthan by a radical Hindu group, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, against a Christian gathering in response to alleged forced conversions. According to Pastor Bansilal Mena, one of the organizers of the event, more than 300 Christians gathered at a community hall to celebrate Christmas, after receiving permission to hold the event. In the middle of the celebration, 20 Hindu radicals barged into the hall along with police personnel and began attacking the Christians, even though the Christians had received permission to hold the event. In addition, Hindu radicals went on stage, pulled wires, and destroyed Christian literature. [ Source: Christian Headlines (Read More…) ]

N.Y. to sue federal gov’t over ‘unconstitutional’ tax law

(Worthy News) – New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Wednesday that he will sue the federal government over the recently passed tax law, which he said was unfair to his state and unconstitutional.

“Washington has launched an all-out, direct attack on New York State’s economic future,” Cuomo said in his “State of the State” speech to state lawmakers, according to the Washington Post. “It is crass. It is ugly. It is divisive. It is partisan legislating. It is an economic civil war. Make no mistake: They are aiming to hurt us.”

At issue for New Yorkers is the $10,000 deduction cap for income, sales and property taxes, also known as the SALT deduction. About 90 percent of New Yorkers who use SALT have incomes of more than $100,000 per year, according to the Tax Foundation, which is almost twice the median state income. [ Source: UPI (Read More…) ]
