U.S. government to shield health workers under ‘religious freedom’

(Worthy News) – The U.S. government is seeking to further protect the “conscience and religious freedom” of health workers whose beliefs prevent them from carrying out abortions and other procedures, in an effort likely to please conservative Christian activists and other supporters of President Donald Trump.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said on Thursday it will create a division within its Office of Civil Rights to give it “the focus it needs to more vigorously and effectively enforce existing laws protecting the rights of conscience and religious freedom.”

Healthcare workers, hospitals with religious affiliations, and medical students among others have been “bullied” by the federal government to provide these services despite existing laws on religious and conscience rights, the top HHS official said. [ Source: Reuters (Read More…) ]

Pro-lifers to march against taxpayer-funded abortions

(Worthy News) – As pro-life marchers descend on Washington on Friday they are confronting a new battlefield in the abortion debate, having to fend off increasing challenges to a decades-old agreement that acknowledged while abortion may be legal, taxpayers shouldn’t be forced to pay for a procedure that many of them find abhorrent.

Democrats have made breaking the 42-year-old policy, known as the Hyde Amendment, a top political priority as they reach to regain political control in Washington.

The taxpayer issue is also being tested in the courts, where the Trump administration is battling the American Civil Liberties Union’s efforts to force the government to facilitate abortions for illegal immigrant teens caught sneaking into the U.S. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

US lawmakers aim to tighten terms of Iran nuclear deal

(Worthy News) – A bill was introduced in the US House of Representatives on Thursday aimed at tightening the terms of the Iran nuclear deal, despite Tehran’s rejection of changes to the accord.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized the agreement aimed at curbing Tehran’s nuclear program, which was signed under his predecessor Barack Obama’s administration.

The “Iran Freedom Policy and Sanctions Act” was introduced by Peter Roskam and backed by Liz Cheney, two Republicans in the US House of Representatives. [ Source: Times of Israel (Read More…) ]

Reports: Israel Attacked ‘Hezbollah Arms Depot’ in Syria’s Damascus

(Worthy News) – Syrian opposition sources claimed Israeli warplanes attacked the Almas military airport near Damascus early Wednesday morning. According to reports, a Hezbollah arms depot was the target of the attack.

There was no immediate official response from the Syrian government or the Israeli army.

The attack follows one from last week which was also attributed to Israel in which an arms depot in a Syrian army military base near Damascus was attacked with jets and ground-to-ground missiles, the Syrian army said. [ Source: Ha’aretz (Read More…) ]

Israeli officials: Trump considering ‘interim measures’ to speed up embassy move

(Worthy News) – Sources in the Prime Minister’s Office on Thursday said the US is considering “interim measures” that would allow for its embassy to be moved to Jerusalem within a year, clarifying comments made earlier by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that were subsequently rebuffed by US President Donald Trump.

Netanyahu, on a visit to India, had earlier this week expressed confidence that Trump would quickly fulfill his pledge to relocate the embassy, telling reporters it would happen “much faster than people think, within a year from today.”

But when asked about the prime minister’s comment in an interview with the Reuters news agency, Trump said Netanyahu was mistaken. [ Source: Times of Israel (Read More…) ]

There are 3.6M ‘DREAMers’ — a number far greater than commonly known

(Worthy News) – The political debate over the fate of “DREAMers” — undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children — has overlooked just how many there are in the country today: about 3.6 million.

That number of people whose lives risk being uprooted is not widely known, in large part because so much public attention has been focused recently on 800,000 mostly young DREAMers accepted into the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

This smaller group of DREAMers is in the spotlight because President Trump terminated DACA in September, saying it was an illegal overreach of executive authority that can only come from Congress, which is negotiating with Trump on a compromise immigration plan. [ Source: USA Today (Read More…) ]
