Appeals Court: Gay Employees Can Sue Employers for Sexual-Orientation Discrimination

(Worthy News) – A federal appeals court on Monday ruled gay employees can sue their employers for discrimination on the basis of sexual-orientation under the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

The judges for the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals in New York City came to the same conclusion made by the Seventh U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago last April. However, a federal appeals court in Atlanta ruled the opposite way last year when considering the federal civil-rights law, according to the Wall Street Journal.

It’s a topic federal courts have debated for years. Is discrimination for sexual-orientation covered under the 1964 Civil Rights Act which prohibits sex discrimination? Legal analysts and court watchers say there’s a high probability that the U.S. Supreme Court may take a look at the issue. [ Source: CBN News (Read More…) ]

House Republicans push for vote on national instant check system expansion

House Republicans push for vote on national instant check system expansion

(Worthy News) – Nearly two dozen House Republicans are pushing Speaker Paul D. Ryan for a quick vote on a bill to get more records into the national instant check system, as lawmakers search for a legislative response to the most recent mass shooting that has a realistic shot at passing Congress.

The Republicans pushing for the vote say Sen. John Cornyn’s “Fix NICS” bill could help the system flag more people who show signs of violent mental behavior, without infringing on Second Amendment rights.

“The NICS system needs to work better we need to make sure that all the data gets in there. We need to compel states to do that. We need to prevent tragedies,” Rep. Ryan Costello, Pennsylvania Republican and a co-sponsor of the bill, said Monday on MSNBC. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

Lawsuit: 100,000 noncitizens registered to vote in Pennsylvania

Lawsuit: 100,000 noncitizens registered to vote in Pennsylvania

(Worthy News) – More than 100,000 noncitizens are registered to vote in Pennsylvania alone, according to testimony submitted Monday in a lawsuit demanding the state come clean about the extent of its problems.

The Public Interest Legal Foundation, which has identified similar noncitizen voting problems in studies of Virginia and New Jersey, said Pennsylvania officials have admitted noncitizens have been registering and voting in the state “for decades.”

But state officials have stonewalled PILF requests for access to the data that could expose the problem, the group says in a lawsuit filed in federal court in Harrisburg. [ Source: Washington times (Read More…) ]

Trump and Congress move on guns after Florida

Trump and Congress move on guns after Florida

(Worthy News) – Many are hoping Congress will finally move on stalled gun control legislation in the wake of the latest deadly school shooting, but the effort on Capitol Hill still faces the same kinds of hurdles that have made it impossible for decades to pass measures that make significant changes to current gun laws.

The Senate could act soon on a bill that would improve the nation’s background check system used for scrutinizing most firearms purchases, including incentives and penalties to make state government report information that could be used to block gun purchases.

But the Republican-run House is likely to oppose the measure unless it is coupled with language allowing concealed carry permit holders to legally bring their weapons to other states, which is a measure that cannot pass the Senate. The two measures were paired in legislation the House passed in December. [ Source: Washington Examiner (Read More…) ]

20 states sue Trump administration to end Obamacare after mandate repeal

20 states sue Trump administration to end Obamacare after mandate repeal

(Worthy News) – Twenty states are suing the Trump administration over the individual mandate in Obamacare that obligates people have health insurance or pay a fine, seeking an end to the entire law.

In the lawsuit filed Monday, states said Congress’s decision to repeal the tax penalty as part of the Republican tax bill signed into law by President Trump, invalidates the mandate and all of Obamacare. The penalty still applies this year, but will go to zero beginning in 2019.

The complaint was filed in the U.S. District Court in the Northern District of Texas. [ Source: Washington Examiner (Read More…) ]
