The new chair signaled the central bank could hike rates more than three times this year in an effort to keep the economy from overheating, sparking anxiety among equity traders.

Papua New Guinea: at least 16 dead after strongest ever earthquake hits

(Worthy News) – The impoverished Pacific nation of Papua New Guinea has been devastated by a 7.5 magnitude earthquake that has claimed at least 16 lives and brought the heartland of the country to its knees.

The earthquake, the strongest ever to hit the country, struck the Southern Highlands, Hela Province and the Western Highlands region early on Monday morning, but the extent of the devastation took days to emerge because of the area’s remoteness.

Southern Highlands governor William Powi said on Wednesday that authorities in his region were still trying to assess the extent of the damage, and his people were traumatized, with the disaster causing “catastrophic havoc and destruction.” [ Source: UK Guardian (Read More…) ]

Appeals Court: Gay Employees Can Sue Employers for Sexual-Orientation Discrimination

(Worthy News) – A federal appeals court on Monday ruled gay employees can sue their employers for discrimination on the basis of sexual-orientation under the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

The judges for the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals in New York City came to the same conclusion made by the Seventh U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago last April. However, a federal appeals court in Atlanta ruled the opposite way last year when considering the federal civil-rights law, according to the Wall Street Journal.

It’s a topic federal courts have debated for years. Is discrimination for sexual-orientation covered under the 1964 Civil Rights Act which prohibits sex discrimination? Legal analysts and court watchers say there’s a high probability that the U.S. Supreme Court may take a look at the issue. [ Source: CBN News (Read More…) ]

House Republicans push for vote on national instant check system expansion

House Republicans push for vote on national instant check system expansion

(Worthy News) – Nearly two dozen House Republicans are pushing Speaker Paul D. Ryan for a quick vote on a bill to get more records into the national instant check system, as lawmakers search for a legislative response to the most recent mass shooting that has a realistic shot at passing Congress.

The Republicans pushing for the vote say Sen. John Cornyn’s “Fix NICS” bill could help the system flag more people who show signs of violent mental behavior, without infringing on Second Amendment rights.

“The NICS system needs to work better we need to make sure that all the data gets in there. We need to compel states to do that. We need to prevent tragedies,” Rep. Ryan Costello, Pennsylvania Republican and a co-sponsor of the bill, said Monday on MSNBC. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

Lawsuit: 100,000 noncitizens registered to vote in Pennsylvania

Lawsuit: 100,000 noncitizens registered to vote in Pennsylvania

(Worthy News) – More than 100,000 noncitizens are registered to vote in Pennsylvania alone, according to testimony submitted Monday in a lawsuit demanding the state come clean about the extent of its problems.

The Public Interest Legal Foundation, which has identified similar noncitizen voting problems in studies of Virginia and New Jersey, said Pennsylvania officials have admitted noncitizens have been registering and voting in the state “for decades.”

But state officials have stonewalled PILF requests for access to the data that could expose the problem, the group says in a lawsuit filed in federal court in Harrisburg. [ Source: Washington times (Read More…) ]
