Florida House passes gun control, school safety bill

(Worthy News) – The Florida House on Wednesday passed a bill that includes some gun control measures and more public safety resources in response to the mass shooting that killed 17 people at a high school last month.

Gun control measures in the bill, which passed 67-50, include a ban on bump stocks, increasing the minimum age to buy a rifle from 18 to 21 and a three-day waiting period on all gun purchases.

Democrats tried to add an amendment that would ban assault weapons, but it was voted down. [ Source: UPI (Read More…) ]

Christian group sues Michigan university after it is kicked off campus

Christian group sues Michigan university after it is kicked off campus

(Worthy News) – A Christian student group is suing a Michigan college after being stripped of its official recognition solely because it required its religious leaders to embrace Christianity.

After 75 years on campus, Wayne State University unconstitutionally de-recognized InterVarsity Christian Fellowship in October, because the group requires its leaders to be Christians, according to a lawsuit filed in federal court yesterday.

“I believe they were unfair and discriminatory,” Lori Windham, senior legal counsel at Becket, representing InterVarsity, told Fox News. “The university let dozens of other student groups choose student leaders according to their beliefs. There’s no reason to single out InterVarsity because of its Christian beliefs.” [ Source: USA Today (Read More…) ]

After Florida shooting, more than 600 copycat threats have targeted schools

After Florida shooting, more than 600 copycat threats have targeted schools

(Worthy News) – Since the high school shooting in Parkland, Fla., there have been 638 reported threats targeting schools across the nation from Feb. 15 to Feb. 27.

Following the deadly Florida rampage, panic swept schools from Maine to California, leading to lockdowns, school closures and deployment of bomb-sniffing dogs.

The dramatic rise in threats — from 10 to about 70 a day — has left school administrators and authorities walking a fine line in dealing with a threat’s credibility. It’s also worried parents who fear sending their children to school and shined a spotlight on the legal debate over what penalties kids should face. [ Source: USA Today (Read More…) ]

Eleven nations – but not U.S. – to sign Trans-Pacific trade deal

Eleven nations – but not U.S. – to sign Trans-Pacific trade deal

(Worthy News) – Eleven countries are expected to sign a landmark Asia-Pacific trade agreement in Santiago on Thursday, as an antidote to the increasingly protectionist bent of the United States, which last year pulled out of the pact.

The signing ceremony comes the day after Europe and the International Monetary Fund urged US President Donald Trump to step back from the brink of a trade war sparked by plans to slap duties on steel and aluminum imports.

The Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) will reduce tariffs in countries that together amount to more than 13 percent of the global economy – a total of $10 trillion. With the United States, it would have represented 40 percent. [ Source: Jerusalem Post (Read More…) ]

6 Pastors Arrested in Rwanda for Planning to Defy Gov’t Ban on ‘Unclean’ Churches

6 Pastors Arrested in Rwanda for Planning to Defy Gov’t Ban on ‘Unclean’ Churches

(Worthy News) – Rwandan police have arrested six Christian pastors on grounds that they are planning to defy a recent order that closed more than 700 churches that allegedly don’t meet safety and cleanliness standards.

AFP reports that authorities in the African country announced Tuesday that they had arrested six “masterminds” plotting to defy the government’s shutdown of 714 churches and one mosque that were deemed unsafe, unclean and noisey in the capital city of Kigali.

The government accuses the religious leaders, all Pentecostals, of holding meetings where they discussed resistance of the order, which was issued last week. [ Source: Christian Post (Read More…) ]
