Abortion providers rake in $1.5 billion in taxpayer funding: Report

(Worthy News) – Three major abortion providers took home more than $1.5 billion in taxpayer funding over a three-year span, according to a report released this week by the Government Accountability Office.

Planned Parenthood, Marie Stopes International and the International Planned Parenthood Federation spent $410 million in federal funding between 2013 and 2015, the report found. The groups also received $1.2 billion from federal health programs that share funding with states, such as Medicaid and Medicare.

The study was spearheaded by Republican Sen. Joni Ernst of Iowa and Republican Reps. Diane Black of Tennessee, Pete Olson of Texas and Chris Smith of New Jersey. [ Source (Read More…) ]

States rush past idling Congress to enact stricter gun laws

States rush past idling Congress to enact stricter gun laws

(Worthy News) – Some states have rushed to enact stricter gun laws in the wake of the Parkland, Florida, school massacre, but Congress is still in pre-debate mode, with plenty of proposals attracting bipartisan support but no firm commitments from Republican leaders to bring any major gun bills to the floor.

House leaders have scheduled a vote next week on a modest bill to send taxpayer money to schools to conduct risk and safety assessments, but it falls far short of what many Americans had demanded — and what states such as Oregon and Florida have done — after the Valentine’s Day shooting.

Oregon Gov. Kate Brown, a Democrat, signed into law this week a measure banning domestic abusers or people with restraining orders from having guns.

More than 20 states are considering legislation similar to Oregon’s, as well as other measures that would allow for protective risk orders and strengthen gun-purchase background checks, according to the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

Mississippi Passes New 15-Week Abortion Restriction, Challenging Supreme Court Precedent

Mississippi Passes New 15-Week Abortion Restriction, Challenging Supreme Court Precedent

(Worthy News) – Mississippi lawmakers on Thursday passed what is likely to be the nation’s most restrictive abortion law.

The House voted 75-34 in favor of the measure, which would make most abortions illegal after 15 weeks of pregnancy. Republican Gov. Phil Bryant has said he’ll sign the bill. The Mississippi Senate passed the measure on Tuesday.

The bill could spark a court challenge focusing on whether states can ban abortions before fetuses can survive outside the womb. The owner of Mississippi’s only abortion clinic, Jackson Women’s Health Organization, has pledged to sue. [ Source: CBN News (Read More…) ]

U.S. and IDF troops, in major joint drill, simulating battle on 3 fronts

U.S. and IDF troops, in major joint drill, simulating battle on 3 fronts

(Worthy News) – Juniper Cobra, the largest joint US-Israeli air-defense exercise, is under way, with thousands of troops deployed across the country simulating scenarios where Israel faces missile barrages simultaneously on various fronts.

In the two years since the last Juniper Cobra exercise, Israel’s enemies have changed. And while 2017 was a relatively quiet year for Israel, the IDF’s Aerial Defense Division successfully intercepted drones in the North, as well as rockets fired from the Gaza Strip and Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula.

The environment in which Israel find itself is “explosive,” said Brig.-Gen Zvika Haimovitch, head of the Aerial Defense Division, adding that “at the beginning of the next war the enemy will use more fire in the opening barrage.” [ Source: Jerusalem Post (Read More…) ]
