CDC finds ‘nightmare bacteria’ prevalent in US

(Worthy News) – Hundreds of cases of “nightmare bacteria” have been found in the U.S., the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday.

New nationwide testing data found 221 instances last year of unusual, antibiotic-resistant genes that previously had been uncommon in the U.S.

The CDC released a report Tuesday that looked at the prevalence of such “nightmare bacteria,” which can include superbugs that can’t be killed by all or most antibiotics. The agency said the report, which details new data gathered from state and local health departments, underscores the need for greater identification of the bacteria. Shin Bet, IDF thwart Islamic Jihad attack on navy boats off Gaza coast

(Worthy News) – Security forces arrested a member of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad terror group off the Gaza coast suspected of planning to sink an Israeli naval patrol boat and kidnap any survivors last month, Israel revealed on Wednesday.

The plan was to use three boats to lure in a navy ship, fire a missile at it and then seize the wounded and slain soldiers, according to a joint statement by the Shin Bet security service and Israel Defense Forces.

This plot was foiled on the night of March 12, when the navy’s 916th Patrol Squadron stopped a Palestinian boat that had left the designated Gaza fishing zone. [ Source: Times of Israel (Read More…) ]

Netanyahu, Trump talk amid Israel fears over US plans to leave Syria

(Worthy News) – US President Donald Trump spoke early Wednesday with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and discussed “recent developments in the Middle East,” amid Israel’s fears that the US plans to withdraw its military presence from Syria.

A terse statement from the White House did clarify not what developments were addressed or what was said. There was no immediate comment from Netanyahu’s office.

But “President Trump reiterated the commitment of the United States to Israel’s security,” the statement said, and added that “the two leaders agreed to continue their close coordination on countering Iran’s malign influence and destabilizing activities.” [ Source: Times of Israel (Read More…) ]

Turkey says Russian S-400 missile delivery brought forward to July 2019

(Worthy News) – The planned delivery of Russian S-400 surface-to-air missile batteries to Turkey has been brought forward to July 2019, the Turkish undersecretary for defence industries said, from the first quarter of 2020.

Turkey and Russia signed the S-400 accord in December, finalising a deal which deepened military ties between NATO member Turkey and the Kremlin.

The deal, reportedly worth some US$2.5 billion, has worried the West because the system cannot be integrated into NATO’s military architecture. [ Source: Channel News Asia (Read More…) ]

DHS observes possible cellphone-site simulators in Washington area

DHS observes possible cellphone-site simulators in Washington area

(Worthy News) – The U.S. government is publicly acknowledging for the first time that it picked up on what appears to be unusual and unauthorized surveillance activity in the nation’s capital last year from cellphone-site simulators – devices that can be used to intercept calls and text messages covertly.

But the Department of Homeland Security says it had not determined the type of any devices possibly used or who might have used them, although it says their use by “foreign governments may threaten U.S. national and economic security.”

The agency also did not say how or where any devices might have been used, admitting only that ‘anomalous activity” observed “appears to be consistent” with the cellphone-site simulators and that it’s “not aware of any current DHS technical ability to detect” them. Russia, Turkey and Iran are Planning Syria’s Future Without the U.S.

Russia, Turkey and Iran are Planning Syria’s Future Without the U.S.

(Worthy News) – Leaders from Russia, Turkey and Iran will meet on Wednesday to plan the future of Syria and how to end the bloody civil war that has dragged on for seven years. But the U.S. and other Western countries are conspicuously absent from the meeting.

The talks, which will take place in Turkey’s capital, Ankara, will center on the drafting of a new constitution for Syria and how to secure zones for “de-escalation,” according to Turkish officials.

All three countries have major stakes in the ongoing war and the future of Syria. Cooperation between them increases the chances that the violence that has killed around 500,000 people could slow down, but consensus between the three regional superpowers also works to highlight how irrelevant U.S. policy toward the region has become, experts said. Akkuyu nuclear plant: Turkey and Russia’s atomic connection

Akkuyu nuclear plant: Turkey and Russia’s atomic connection

(Worthy News) – Via video from Ankara, the presidents of Russia and Turkey, Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan, kicked off construction of Turkey’s first nuclear power plant. The Akkuyu power plant in the Mediterranean coastal province of Mersin is a Turkish-Russian venture expected to cost $20 billion and meet ten percent of Turkey’s energy needs. Yet experts say it remains unclear when it would really come online: Neither the required technology transfer from Russia nor a construction completion date has been set.

The project deal between the two countries was agreed to in 2010. The plant was provisorily expected to start generating power from its first unit by 2023, with three more units coming online by 2026. Each of the four units is intended to generate 1,200 megawatts of electricity. [ Source: Deutche Welle (Read More…) ]

Mr. Trump also claimed that “nobody’s been tougher on Russia than I have.”
