Federal judge orders complete restart of DACA

Federal judge orders complete restart of DACA

(Worthy News) – A federal judge delivered another blow to President Trump’s attempt to roll back the Obama-era DACA program, ruling Tuesday that last year’s revocation was illegal and the entire program could have to be restarted.

That goes beyond other judges, who had also ruled the phaseout illegal but had only ordered Homeland Security to accept renewal applications from people who’d already been awarded DACA before. Judge John D. Bates’s ruling would require a full restart, meaning even illegal immigrant “Dreamers” who’d never been approved before would now be able to apply for DACA.

The judge imposed a 90-day delay on his own ruling to give the government a chance to reargue its case, but for now the ruling stands as the most severe blow yet to Mr. Trump’s phaseout. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

Trump and France’s Macron seek new measures on Iran as deadline looms

Trump and France’s Macron seek new measures on Iran as deadline looms

(Worthy News) – U.S. President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron pledged on Tuesday to seek stronger measures to contain Iran, but Trump refrained from committing to staying in a 2015 nuclear deal and threatened Tehran with retaliation if it restarted its nuclear program.

At a news conference with Macron, the U.S. president kept up his blistering rhetoric against the nuclear accord between Iran and world powers that he says does not address Tehran’s rising influence in the Middle East or its ballistic missile program.

With a May 12 deadline looming for Trump to decide on restoring U.S. economic sanctions on Tehran, Macron said he spoke to Trump about a “new deal” in which the United States and Europe would tackle the outstanding concerns about Iran beyond its nuclear program. [ Source: Reuters (Read More…) ]

US-backed forces returning to the ISIS fight in Syria

US-backed forces returning to the ISIS fight in Syria

(Worthy News) – U.S.-backed Kurdish fighters are beginning to return to the front lines of the fight against the Islamic State in eastern Syria, now that Turkey’s offensive against the Kurds in the west has eased, a U.S. military spokesman said.

ISIS controls two areas in Syria east of the Euphrates River. One is in and around town of Hajin, which is along the river, and the other is near Dashisha, near the Syria-Iraq border.

The Turkish offensive aimed at driving the Kurds in northwest Syria away from its border pulled many Kurds away from the ISIS fight to defend their home areas, and forced the U.S. into an “operational pause” in February and March. [ Source: Washington Examiner (Read More…) ]

Federal judge gives DHS 90 days to explain decision to end DACA or risk its restoration

(Worthy News) – A federal judge condemned President Trump’s decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program as “unlawful,” saying its justification for doing so has been “virtually unexplained.”

U.S. District Court Judge John Bates, the third federal judge and the first Republican appointee to rule against Trump administration attempts to kill DACA, wrote in a Tuesday opinion that the Department of Homeland Security has 90 days to provide him with a more compelling reason for rolling back the Obama-era program, otherwise he could order its restoration.

“DACA’s rescission was arbitrary and capricious because the Department failed adequately to explain its conclusion that the program was unlawful,” Bates wrote. [ Source (Read More…) ]
