Trump to demand Congress cut $15B in spending ‘rescission’ package

(Worthy News) – President Trump wants to do even more to limit the spending side of the budget, the White House told Congress. He said he will send up a $15 billion ‘rescissions’ package on Tuesday and challenge lawmakers to cut money that has been sitting unspent in accounts across the government.

Among the 38 cuts he will propose are $4.3 billion in a vehicle technology loan program, $800 million from an Obamacare payment pilot program and more than $200 million that the Obama administration earmarked for the Ebola outbreak that dissipated years ago.

The administration said it is the largest single rescission package any president has ever submitted and would be the first rescissions-only White House proposal to clear Congress in nearly 20 years. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

IDF on high alert in north, fears Iran reprisal may include infiltration attack

(Worthy News) – The Israeli military was in a state of high alert in the country’s north Monday, in readiness for possible retaliation by Iran over alleged Israeli strikes on its sites in Syria. Security forces are preparing for the possibility of attempted infiltrations of military bases and communities in the north, Hadashot TV news reported.

According to the report, security forces are taking steps to mitigate the damage from any such potential attack, fearing that a harsh Iranian strike could force Israel’s hand and lead to an unwanted escalation with Tehran.

Israeli officials believe Iran’s Revolutionary Guards are leading efforts to retaliate against Israel, using its proxies in Syria — Hezbollah forces and Shiite militias — to attack the Jewish state, Hadashot reported. [ Source: Times of Israel (Read More…) ]

April was best month in history for U.S. budget, according to CBO figures

(Worthy News) – The federal government took in a record tax haul in April en route to its biggest-ever monthly budget surplus, the Congressional Budget Office said, as a surging economy left Americans with more money in their paychecks — and this more to pay to Uncle Sam.

All told the government collected $515 billion and spent $297 billion, for a total monthly surplus of $218 billion. That swamped the previous monthly record of $190 billion, set in 2001.

CBO analysts were surprised by the surplus, which was some $40 billion more than they’d guessed at less than a month ago. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

Hezbollah head hails electoral ‘victory’ as protection from calls to disarm

(Worthy News) – The leader of Lebanon’s Hezbollah on Monday praised provisional parliamentary election results as vindicating his Shiite group’s armed operations.

“This is a great political and moral victory for the resistance option that protects the sovereignty of the country,” Hassan Nasrallah said in a televised address.

A day after Lebanon’s first general election in nine years, Hezbollah and its allies looked set to secure a bloc large enough to block attempts for it to disarm, a longstanding demand of its political enemies, and give it a larger say in the county’s defense policies. Housing confidence hits record high as home prices skyrocket

(Worthy News) – Supply is tight, prices are soaring and mortgage rates are rising. That shouldn’t exactly add up to a happy housing market, and yet, it does. Consumer confidence in housing jumped to its highest level on record in April, according to a monthly sentiment index from Fannie Mae.

Of the index’s six components, only the share of those who think it’s a good time to buy fell. No surprise there, given the high competition in most of the nation’s neighborhoods. The share of those who think it’s a good time to sell and those who think prices will continue to rise jumped the most. In addition, more consumers think their incomes will rise over the next year, and fewer think they will lose their jobs.

Consumer attitudes remain resilient going into the spring/summer home buying season,” said Doug Duncan, senior vice president and chief economist at Fannie Mae. “However, the upward trend in the good-time-to-sell share seen since last spring has done little to release more for-sale inventory. The tightest supply in decades, combined with rising mortgage rates from historically low levels, will likely remain a hurdle for mobility and a persistent headwind for home sales.” [ Source: CNBC (Read More…) ]

Obamacare Premiums to Surge Next Year, Early Requests Show

(Worthy News) – The first glimpse of what health-insurance companies plan to charge for Obamacare plans next year suggests there’s no relief ahead for consumers saddled with high premiums.

Several insurers in Maryland and Virginia are seeking double-digit percentage increases in monthly costs for individual medical plans in 2019. The largest increases are being sought by CareFirst, which wants to nearly double the amount it charges on average for one coverage option in Maryland, and raise the cost of another in Virginia by 64 percent.

Virginia and Maryland are the first states where 2019 rate requests have been made public. Increases are anticipated across the U.S. as insurers continue to grapple with the aftermath of last year’s battle to overturn the Affordable Care Act. [ Source: Bloomberg (Read More…) ]

Trump Religious Freedom Order Helps Charities Serve Over 13.7 Million in Need, Analysis Finds

Shi’ite militia groups in Syria to do Iran’s dirty work, strike Israel

(Worthy News) – Shi’ite militia groups in Syria are the ones likely to carry out a strike on Israel on behalf of Iran, giving Tehran the ability to deny its role in the attack, according to leading regional experts.

Israel is bracing for a barrage of missiles to be launched towards military positions along its northern front from Syrian territory, masterminded by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps, as revenge for alleged Israeli strikes on Iranian bases there.

While Hezbollah and the IRGC are the only groups who have the weapons and know-how to launch the strike, it is believed that the attack will be launched by one of the many Shi’ite groups stationed in Syria and active in the civil war there. [ Source: Jerusalem Post (Read More…) ]

China’s trade surplus with US grows

(Worthy News) – China’s surplus with the United States widened in April, underlining an imbalance between the economic titans as they struggle to reach an agreement on averting a potentially damaging trade war.

The figures Tuesday (May 8) will likely reinforce Washington’s determination after high-level talks in Beijing last week ended with both sides admitting there were big differences to overcome, with threats of tariffs on billions of dollars of goods casting a shadow.

Customs data showed the surplus grew 4.2 per cent on-year to US$22.2 billion last month, with exports rising by a tenth and imports up more than 20 per cent. [ Source: Channel News Asia (Read More…) ]
