Pompeo in NKorea to finalize summit, seek Americans’ release

(Worthy News) – U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo traveled to North Korea on Wednesday to finalize plans for a historic summit between President Donald Trump and the North’s leader, Kim Jong Un.

U.S. officials said Pompeo will also press North Korea for the release of three detained American citizens, whose imminent release Trump has been hinting at.

The trip, Pompeo’s second to North Korea this year, had not been publicly disclosed when he flew out of Washington under cover of darkness late Monday aboard an Air Force 757. Trump announced the mission Tuesday afternoon as he laid out the case for withdrawing from a landmark nuclear deal with Iran, another bitter U.S. adversary. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

Iran talks tough, Israel braces for worst after Trump pulls out of nuclear deal

(Worthy News) – Iran said Tuesday that it was prepared to quickly restart uranium enrichment — the process needed to make nuclear bombs — if President Trump’s withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal leads to a total collapse of the Obama-era accord.

The threat from Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, issued barely an hour after Mr. Trump revealed his decision at the White House, came amid rising concern that the U.S. pullout from the deal would strengthen the hand of Tehran’s hard-liners and lead to more aggressive policies in Syria and elsewhere across the Middle East, increasing the prospect of a direct clash with Israel, Washington’s closest ally in the region.

As Mr. Trump outlined his decision and major allies and adversaries took in the news, the biggest variable may be how Iran reacts, with various factions angling for power and the economy in need of the relief that the nuclear deal was supposed to bring. Options range from trying to keep the deal together with the agreement’s other partners to dropping the policy of engagement and racing to acquire a nuclear bomb. Senate Intel report: Russia targeted at least 21 states in 2016 election

(Worthy News) – The Senate intelligence committee has concluded that Kremlin-supported operatives targeted the voting in nearly two dozen states in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, according to the first report in the panel’s yearlong probe.

“During the 2016 election, Russian entities targeted presidential campaign accounts, launched cyber-attacks against at least 21 state election systems, and hacked a U.S .voting systems software company,” committee member Sen. James Lankford, Oklahoma Republican, said in a press release accompanying the report, which was released late Tuesday.

No voter tallies or voter registration information is known to have been changed, but the report said that the Russians were “in a position to, at a minimum, alter or delete voter registration data” in a few states. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]
