Supreme Court clears path for states to legalize sports gambling

(Worthy News) – The Supreme Court cleared the way for a massive expansion of legal sports gambling in the U.S., ruling Monday that a federal law that had effectively limited betting mainly to Nevada is unconstitutional.

In a 6-3 decision, the justices said the 1992 law violated the sovereignty of other states to decide their own gambling policies.

One major effect of the law had been to constrain online sports betting. The industry predicted that the court ruling would unshackle internet gambling. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

Islamic Extremist Suicide Bomber Family Attacks Three Churches in East Java, Indonesia

(Worthy News) – Islamic extremists in Indonesia, including a family of suicide bombers that targeted three churches, launched multiple attacks yesterday and today that reportedly killed at least 12 people not including the assailants.

The father of the family that killed the Christians on Sunday (May 13), Dita Futrianto, was the suspected head of the local cell of an Islamic State-inspired network called Jemaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD), the BBC reported, citing police.

Futrianto was reported to have dropped off his wife, Puji Kuswati, and their two daughters, ages 9 and 12, at Diponegoro Indonesian Christian Church in Surabaya, East Java. With her two daughters present, Kuswati hugged a parishioner before detonating her bomb, according to the Associated Press, citing a security guard. [ Source: Morningstar News (Read More…) ]

Mueller may have a conflict — and it leads directly to a Russian oligarch

(Worthy News) – Special counsel Robert Mueller has withstood relentless political attacks, many distorting his record of distinguished government service.

But there’s one episode even Mueller’s former law enforcement comrades — and independent ethicists — acknowledge raises legitimate legal issues and a possible conflict of interest in his overseeing the Russia election probe.

In 2009, when Mueller ran the FBI, the bureau asked Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska to spend millions of his own dollars funding an FBI-supervised operation to rescue a retired FBI agent, Robert Levinson, captured in Iran while working for the CIA in 2007. [ Source: The Hill (Read More…) ]

U.S., China still ‘very far apart’ on trade: U.S. ambassador

(Worthy News) – The United States wants China to give a timetable on how it will open up its markets to U.S. exports as the two countries are still “very far apart” on resolving trade frictions, U.S. Ambassador to China Terry Branstad said on Tuesday.

Washington and Beijing have proposed tens of billions of dollars in tariffs in recent weeks, fanning worries of a full-blown trade war that could hurt global supply chains and dent business investment plans.

Earlier this month, a U.S. delegation led by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin presented China with a list of demands to tackle allegations of intellectual property theft and other trade policies Washington considers unfair. [ Source: Reuters (Read More…) ]

After a Record Hurricane Season in 2017, Forecasters Warn U.S. to Brace for More This Year

(Worthy News) – Parts of the country are still cleaning up after 2017’s devastating hurricane season, but forecasters are already sounding a warning bell about 2018. And even though hurricane season doesn’t officially begin until June 1, the first named storm could arrive as soon as this weekend.

Separate forecasts from North Carolina State University and Colorado State University predict there will be between 14 and 18 named storms on the eastern seaboard this year. Colorado State predicts seven of those will be hurricanes. North Carolina State believes between 7 and 11 will. (The Weather Channel, meanwhile, is predicting a slightly more sedate 13 named storms and six hurricanes, two of which it says will be major.)

In either model, that’s above the average. From 1950 through 2017, the average number of named storms has been 11. If there’s any good news, it’s that should the models prove true, it will still be less than 2017’s 17 named storms, 10 hurricanes and six major hurricanes. [ Source: Fortune (Read More…) ]
