Israel girds for second day of violence amid fears protests may spread

(Worthy News) – Israeli forces were gearing up Tuesday for a second straight day of Palestinian protests and the prospect that they may spread, after hours of bloody clashes on the Gaza border Monday left at least 58 Palestinians dead and thousands more injured.

Tuesday is expected to be the culmination of seven weeks of protests at the Gaza Strip border fence, with fears that tens of thousands of Palestinians could take part in widespread demonstrations encouraged by the Hamas terror group. Similar demonstrations were expected in the West Bank and possibly the Lebanese border, as Palestinians mark a yearly commemoration of the displacement of the Palestinian Arabs during the 1948 war with Israel, which Palestinians term the “catastrophe,” or Nakba.

Ahead of this week’s protests, the Israel Defense Forces dispatched two additional combat brigades — approximately 2,000 soldiers — to the Gaza border and one additional brigade to the West Bank. [ Source: Times of Israel (Read More…) ]

Palestinians say baby, killed by tear gas, among 58 Gaza dead

(Worthy News) – The Gaza Strip’s Hamas-run health ministry said Tuesday morning that a baby was among those killed during violent border clashes along the territory’s border with Israel the previous day, bringing the overall death toll in the day’s bloody events to 58.

The baby died from inhaling tear gas fired at Palestinian protesters, the health ministry said.

Six of those killed by gunshots in the clashes were minors, the ministry said. In addition, 1,360 Palestinians were wounded by gunfire, including 130 who were in serious or critical condition. It said 2,700 people were injured overall. [ Source: Times of Israel (Read More…) ]

Unfazed by Gaza riots, Jerusalem celebrates itself — and Donald Trump

(Worthy News) – Despite the festive atmosphere, guests of Monday’s inauguration of the American embassy in Jerusalem were acutely aware of the deadly violence taking place at the same time along Israel’s border with the Gaza Strip.

As they waited for the VIPs to arrive and the festivities to start, many in the audience received constant updates on the security situation at the southern border. Some watched live newscasts on their phones, letting their spouses know every time the death toll increased. There was palpable concern as the number rose and it became clear the violence would likely have implications for Israel beyond some fleeting headlines.

But attendees made clear they would not let the mounting bloodshed in Gaza spoil the party. The people had braved long lines and exceedingly tight security arrangements to come to the new embassy in the capital’s Arnona neighborhood and celebrate what they felt was a truly unique moment in the history of the Jewish people.
