Nepal Four Churches Targeted in Arson Attacks

(Worthy News) – Four Christian Churches in Nepal have been attacked over a five-day period by unidentified assailants. The attacks, which began on the 9 May, targeted Mahima Church in Dhangadhi, Emmanuel Church in Kanchanpur and Emmanuel Church Budor in Doti, Western Nepal. Hebron Church in Panchthar, Eastern Nepal was also targeted.

Although no-one was killed in the attacks, these developments appear to show a worrying increase in hostilities towards Christian groups in Nepal.

On 9 May, Hebron Church in Hilihang Rural Municipality, Panchthar was set on fire at night. The church, which had concluded its youth conference earlier that day, was partially damaged in the fire; the pulpit, carpet and a number of pieces of furniture were damaged or destroyed. No one was in the church at the time of the attack. [ Source: Christian Solidarity Worldwide (Read More…) ]

‘Excited and scared’: Hawaii volcano spews huge cloud of ash

(Worthy News) – A volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island erupted anew Thursday with little sound and only modest fury, spewing a steely gray plume of ash about 30,000 feet (9,100 meters) into the sky that began raining down on a nearby town.

The explosion at the summit of Kilauea came shortly after 4 a.m. following two weeks of volcanic activity that sent lava flows into neighborhoods and destroyed at least 26 homes. Scientists said the eruption was the most powerful in recent days, though it probably lasted only a few minutes.

Geologists have warned that the volcano could become even more violent, with increasing ash production and the potential that future blasts could hurl boulders the size of cows from the summit. [ Source: Fox News (Read More…) ]

Trump signs new environmental executive order

(Worthy News) – President Trump is starting his own government-wide environmental sustainability and energy efficiency program through an executive order he signed late on Thursday.

The order directs federal agencies to manage their buildings, vehicles, and overall operations in order to “optimize energy and environmental performance, reduce waste, and cut costs,” according to the White House.

It also calls on the White House Council of Environmental Quality to streamline pre-existing environmental orders by “refocusing agencies on cost-effectively meeting mandates and goals” established by law, as opposed to executive fiat. [ Source: Washington Examiner (Read More…) ]

Trump poised to unveil policy cutting funds for abortion providers

(Worthy News) – The Trump administration is poised to roll out a new policy that would place additional restrictions on Planned Parenthood and other reproductive health organizations administering abortions, a new report says.

The new policy, set to be unveiled Friday, will prohibit Planned Parenthood and other organizations from performing or mentioning abortions at facilities that accept federal family planning funding, two White House officials and others told the New York Times.

Conservative activists and GOP members of Congress have urged Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar to crack down on restrictions so organizations cannot perform abortions in facilities that accept federally funded reproductive health services. However, it is already against the law for federal family planning funds to go toward organizations that consider abortion a family planning method. [ Source: Washington Examiner (Read More…) ]

Israel girds for first Friday of Ramadan amid heightened tensions

(Worthy News) – Israeli police were gearing up for another possible day of mass Palestinian protests Friday, with officials saying that the points of friction may move from the Gaza border to the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

May 18 marks the first Friday of the holy month of Ramadan for Muslims, when increased religious observance and the closure of many businesses during daylight hours sometimes leads to heightened tensions and clashes with troops.

However, despite the heightened readiness, with some 1,500 police officers deployed to the capital, the army and police said there were no specific security warnings of any kind, and officials had no plans for putting in place heightened security measures, such as limits to the number of Muslim worshipers allowed at Jerusalem’s holy sites over the course of the day, according to reports in Hebrew-language media. Erdogan hosts Islamic summit to back Palestinians, condemn Israel

(Worthy News) – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday hosts for the second time in half a year a summit of the world’s main pan-Islamic group seeking to show solidarity with the Palestinians and condemn Israel after deadly clashes at the Gaza border Monday in which some 60 Palestinians were killed by IDF fire.

Many in the international community have criticized Israel for the deaths, while the IDF and Hamas have claimed, each for its own reasons, that many of the dead were members of Gazan terror groups.

Erdogan, who is in the middle of an election campaign in Turkey, has reacted with unbridled fury to the deaths, accusing Israel of “genocide,” calling it a “terror state,” and saying it was run as an “apartheid state.” [ Source: Times of Israel (Read More…) ]

Turkey probed over shipment of Israeli-made electronic equipment to Iran

(Worthy News) – Turkey is reportedly under investigation by the United Nations over a shipment of Israeli-made electronic equipment to Iran in violation of a Security Council resolution which prohibits the transfer of nuclear-related products to the Islamic Republic.

A report by Israel’s Yedioth Ahronoth published Thursday said that the probe was initiated after the United Arab Emirates seized a shipment of CSP 180-300 electronic capacitors from Turkey to Iran in July 2017.

Israel was subsequently asked to investigate the matter after it was discovered that the equipment had been manufactured by Celem Power Capacitors, a leading Jerusalem-based electronics firm, the report said. [ Source: i24 (Read More…) ]

Google’s Selfish Ledger is an Unsettling Vision of Silicon Valley Social Engineering

(Worthy News) – Google has built a multibillion-dollar business out of knowing everything about its users. Now, a video produced within Google and obtained by The Verge offers a stunningly ambitious and unsettling look at how some at the company envision using that information in the future.
