DOJ watchdog finds James Comey defied authority as FBI director, sources say

(Worthy News) – The Justice Department’s internal watchdog has concluded that James Comey defied authority at times during his tenure as FBI director, according to sources familiar with a draft report on the matter.

One source told ABC News that the draft report explicitly used the word “insubordinate” to describe Comey’s behavior. Another source agreed with that characterization but could not confirm the use of the term.

In the draft report, Inspector General Michael Horowitz also rebuked former Attorney General Loretta Lynch for her handling of the federal investigation into Hillary Clinton’s personal email server, the sources said. [ Source: ABC News (Read More…) ]

Judge: ‘In God We Trust’ on money isn’t religion endorsement

(Worthy News) – A federal court has ruled that printing “In God We Trust” on U.S. currency doesn’t amount to a religious endorsement and therefore doesn’t violate the U.S. Constitution.

The Chicago Daily Law Bulletin reports the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago made the ruling Thursday in a lawsuit brought by a self-declared Satanist, Kenneth Mayle. He argued that the motto propagates a religious view he opposes.

A lower court tossed the suit citing a Supreme Court decision that a motto on currency isn’t something people display prominently and thus that people are not forced to publicly advertise views that clash with their own. [ Source: ABC News (Read More…) ]

Wycliffe Associates Looks to Begin Bible Translation for 10 Previously Unknown Language Groups

(Orlando, Florida, USA) — Wycliffe Associates, an international organization involving people in the advancement of Bible translation, has recently discovered 10 remote, previously unknown language groups in the Middle East and parts of Asia where Christians live in hiding and are without any of the Bible translated into their language.

“There are pockets of Christian believers in each of these language groups,” said Bruce Smith, President and CEO of Wycliffe Associates. “Somehow, generations ago, they heard the good news, and they’ve done their best to keep the faith all this time.”

These groups live in extreme isolation, in countries too dangerous to name, and in locations that require days of travel to reach because of imposing terrain and hidden mountain passes.
“Some live in exile from oppressive regimes and we had never been able to make contact with them,” said Smith.

But recently Wycliffe Associates began hearing of the groups one by one. “By the grace of a loving God, they flickered onto our radar,” said Smith. A rare visitor ‘happened’ to make a comment, a remote radio signal crackled to life, or intrepid Christians trekked through dangerous territory, determined to make contact.”

Smith points out that the language groups are not necessarily small. Yet even in large language groups, there are very few Christians among them. Wycliffe Associates hopes to encourage the Christians in those language groups by providing them with something they have never had before: a Bible in their own language.

Through the Scriptures for New Frontiers program, Wycliffe Associates provides support to indigenous Christians who want to bring the Scriptures to their own people in their own language. The organization provides training to support locally led translation efforts, open source Bible translation technology, computer tablets loaded with Bible translation software, and digital Scripture distribution.

“Christians are extreme minorities in these countries,” said Smith. “In some of these areas authorities and traditional religious leaders are so threatened by believers that they lash out against them. Christians have to hide in order to survive. It’s hard to imagine how alone they’ve been.”

Wycliffe Associates hopes to launch 10 new Bible translation language projects as soon as possible, at a cost of $19,500 each, by providing mother-tongue Bible translators with computer tablets, software training, and a safe place to work.

Of the 7,097 languages currently spoken in the world, 2,758 languages still need a Bible translation projected started.

About Wycliffe Associates

One of the world’s leading Bible translation organizations, Wycliffe Associates was organized in 1967 by friends of Bible translators to accelerate the work of Bible translation. Wycliffe Associates empowers national Bible translators to provide God’s Word in their own language, partners with the local church to direct and guard translation work, harnessing their passion and desire for God’s Word, and engages people from all around the world to provide resources, technology, training, and support for Bible translation.

Because millions of people around the world still wait to have the Scriptures in the language of their hearts, Wycliffe Associates is working as quickly as it can to see every verse of God’s Word translated into every tongue to speak to every heart. Wycliffe Associates is directly involved with speeding Bible translation by providing technology, training, resources, logistics, networking, expertise, volunteers, discipleship, church planting, and support. Last year, 7,402 Wycliffe Associates staff and volunteers worked to speed Bible translations in 73 countries. For more information, please see https://ift.tt/1yHQh0f.

House unveils $674B defense spending bill for 2019

(Worthy News) – The House Appropriations Committee unveiled a $674.6 billion defense spending bill Wednesday.

While the committee scheduled a markup session for Thursday and debate with the Senate’s version of the budget will likely take months, the House version provides $605 billion in base discretionary funding. That figure is less than President Donald Trump’s administration requested, but more than the 2018 level.

The proposed funding would pay for more than 15,000 additional troops and pay raises for those already in military service — as well as 93 F-35 Lightning II and two dozen F/A-18 E/F fighter jets. The House version also calls for a dozen new Navy ships. [ Source: UPI (Read More…) ]

FBI to share new details of Trump campaign informant with Congress

(Worthy News) – The Justice Department intends to offer an additional briefing to a select group of senior lawmakers who have pressed for details about the FBI’s use of an informant to make contact with associates of President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign.

A senior Justice Department official said lawmakers in the so-called Gang of Eight — a group that includes Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) — will have an opportunity to review documents that they didn’t review during a high-level classified briefing last month.

“The Department and FBI are prepared to brief members on certain questions specifically raised by the Speaker and other members,” the DOJ official said. “The Department will also provide the documents that were available for review but not inspected by the members at the previous briefing along with some additional material.” [ Source: Politico (Read More…) ]
