(Worthy News) – A California man had his home raided, guns seized, and will appear in court this week to face a dozen state felony charges after attempting to register a rifle in accordance with state law.

Jeffrey Scott Kirschenmann attempted to register an AR-15 with the California Department of Justice last month but instead found himself in significant legal trouble.

The National Rifle Association said Kirschenmann’s ordeal is proof that even those who attempt to comply with California’s gun laws can still get caught up in them.

“California residents attempting to comply with the Golden State’s ever-increasing swamp of firearms laws and regulations should take warning,” the gun-rights group said in a post on its Institute for Legislative Action website. “A good faith effort to obey the state’s labyrinthine firearm rules will not spare a gun owner in technical violation of the law from the wrath of the California Department of Justice.” [ Source: Washington Free Beacon (Read More…) ]

The annual Values and Beliefs poll shows 48 percent oppose abortion — and 48 percent support the practice.

(Worthy News) – Two steam explosions occurred at the summit of the Kilauea volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island early Monday, seismologists said.

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said two explosions of similar seismicity took place at 12:46 a.m. and 4:43 a.m. Seismic activity and explosions have occurred at the summit since the beginning of May.

The observatory also reported that three closely spaced lava fountains at Fissure 8 erupted with lava at heights between 115 feet and 130 feet, and volcanic gas emissions were measured to have doubled in the past two weeks. [ Source: UPI (Read More…) ]

(Worthy News) – Two thousand years of Christianity in Syria could be wiped out by the very forces Western governments are supporting, an Anglican vicar has claimed.

Rev. Andrew Ashdown, who has made ten trips to Syria since 2014 and is studying for a PhD in relations between Christians and Muslims there, also accused Western nations and Western church leaders of “neglecting” Syrian Christians.

Rev. Ashdown traveled to Syria in April with a group that included Anglican Canon Giles Fraser, Baroness Cox, Bishop Michael Langrish and Dr. Erica Hunter, an expert on Middle Eastern Christianity from London University’s School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS). The group was criticised for not canceling the visit, which took place hours after British, French and American pilots carried out an airstrike on alleged chemical weapons facilities run by the regime of President Bashar al-Assad. (Worthy News) – The United States Supreme Court reporters has refused to hear an appeal in the case of a conservative diocese that broke away from The Episcopal Church seeking to maintain ownership of $500 million worth of property.

In an order released Monday morning, the justices refused to hear an appeal in the case of the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina, allowing a state supreme court ruling against the breakaway leadership to stand.

(Worthy News) – The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday revived Ohio’s contentious policy of purging infrequent voters from registration rolls in a ruling powered by the five conservative justices and denounced by liberal Justice Sonia Sotomayor as an endorsement of the disenfranchisement of minority and low-income Americans.

In a 5-4 decision in the closely watched voting-rights case, the high court overturned a lower court’s ruling that Ohio’s policy violated a 1993 federal law enacted to make it easier to register to vote. All four liberal justices dissented, and top Democrats said the decision will boost what they called Republican voter-suppression efforts. But other states may now follow Ohio’s lead.

Voters purged from registration rolls who challenged the policy in the Republican-governed state argued that the practice illegally erased thousands of voters from registration rolls and disproportionately impacted racial minorities and poor people who tend to back Democratic candidates.
