Two Christians Ambushed, Killed in Central Nigeria

(Worthy News) – Muslim Fulani herdsmen on Sunday (June 10) killed two Christians and seriously wounded another in central Nigeria as they made their way home from a church service, local sources said.

Ibrahim Weyi, 45, and Larry More, 53, were said to be hacked to death when herdsmen ambushed them at 7:40 p.m. as the Christians were going home on a motorcycle from an evening worship service in Plateau state’s Kwall village, in the Bassa area, Patience Moses told Morning Star News.

A third Christian, 23-year-old Samuel Weyi, was wounded in the attack, the local resident said. All three belong to the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) in Kwall, another resident, Lawerence Zango, told Morning Star News. Weyi is receiving treatment at an Intensive Care Unit of a hospital in Jos, he said. [ Source: Morningstar News (Read More…) ]

Trump heading to Capitol Hill Tuesday to sell GOP members on both immigration bills

(Worthy News) – President Trump will reportedly meet with the entire Republican caucus on Capitol Hill Tuesday to push the caucus toward passing two immigration bills in the coming days.

A House leadership aide confirmed to the Washington Examiner the meeting will take place at 5:30 Tuesday evening and comes on the heels of a tumultuous end of the week for the White House’s messaging on immigration reform.

Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., had originally planned to bring a bill authored by Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., and one authored by GOP leadership to the floor for votes next week, yet those plans were thrown into limbo following comments made by the president Friday morning. Devin Nunes: ‘Hell to pay’ if Justice Department fails to turn over Russia documents this week

(Worthy News) – The Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence said Sunday there will “be hell to pay” if the Justice Department doesn’t comply with outstanding requests this week for information related to the Russian investigation.

Rep. Devin Nunes’s comments come after GOP leaders met with officials from the Justice Department on Friday night and discussed roughly 20 deadlines that had either been partially met or not yet fulfilled. He also said their staffs would meet Monday to continue working on the details.

The California Republican told Fox News they came to an agreement Friday that the Justice Department would begin to hand over the requested documents this week, and lawmakers should have some of the requests fulfilled by Wednesday morning. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

Syria says US-led strike hits troops in east, US denies

(Worthy News) – Syrian state media reported Monday that an airstrike against pro-government forces in the far east of the country caused casualties, while Iraqi officials said 20 Shiite paramilitaries were killed just across the border.

The Syrian state TV report said the airstrike occurred around midnight in the village of al-Hari, to the southeast of the border town of Boukamal, and was carried out by the U.S.-led coalition battling the Islamic State group. But a coalition spokesman said it had not carried out any strikes in the area.

U.S. military spokesman Col. Sean Ryan said the coalition was looking into the reports.

“We are aware of the strike near Boukamal, however there have been no strikes by U.S. or coalition forces in that area,” he said. “We’re looking into who that could possibly be but it wasn’t the U.S. or the coalition.” [ Source: ABC News (Read More…) ]

House expects to finish work on opioid bills, with eye toward Senate

(Worthy News) – The House expects to finish passage next week on nearly 20 bills aimed at fighting the opioid epidemic, with an eye toward a conference with the Senate over the summer.

The House passed about 30 bills last week that range from boosting treatment options to stemming the tide of shipments of illegal opioids from overseas. Next week, the House will consider about 20 bills and a legislative vehicle that would combine all of the legislation into one package.

“Altogether, this will be the most significant congressional effort against a single drug crisis in history,” House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., wrote in an op-ed in the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. [ Source: Washington Examiner (Read More…) ]

Benjamin Netanyahu tells Vladimir Putin: ‘Iran has to withdraw from all of Syria’

(Worthy News) – Russian President Vladimir Putin can expect Israel to attack his Iranian partners anywhere they operate in Syria, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday.

“First of all, Iran has to withdraw from all of Syria,” Netanyahu told his Cabinet while recounting his most recent conversation with the Russian leader.

Russia and Iran have partnered to secure Syrian dictator Bashar Assad’s regime in the face of a civil war involving a shifting array of U.S.-backed Kurdish fighters, jihadists affiliated with al Qaeda, and the Islamic State. Iranian forces and Iran-controlled terrorist militias have provided crucial ground support for Assad, but Netanyahu has carried out major airstrikes to limit Iran’s long-term ability to project power in Syria, which neighbors Israel. Trump and Giuliani go to war against Mueller as White House looks on

(Worthy News) – As President Trump seeks to de-escalate tensions with North Korea, he and his personal legal team are ratcheting up their rhetoric against special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

“Now that I am back from Singapore, where we had a great result with respect to North Korea, the thought process must sadly go back to the Witch Hunt, always remembering that there was No Collusion and No Obstruction of the fabricated No Crime,” Trump tweeted last week.

The president is no longer waging this PR offensive alone, however, as former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani — now serving as one of Trump’s personal attorneys — is a ubiquitous presence on cable news. [ Source: Washington Examiner (Read More…) ]

Saudi-led coalition conducts air strikes on Yemen’s Hodeidah airport

(Worthy News) – Houthi forces fought to keep control of the airport in Yemen’s main port city of Hodeidah on Sunday as Saudi-led coalition air strikes struck the compound, in an offensive that could be a turning point in the three-year conflict.

Losing Hodeidah would deal a serious blow to the Iran-aligned Houthis, cutting supply lines from the Red Sea to their stronghold in the capital Sanaa.

It could also give an edge to the Western-backed military alliance which, despite superior weaponry and firepower, has failed to defeat the Houthis in a war that has killed 10,000 people and created the world’s most urgent humanitarian crisis. [ Source: Reuters (Read More…) ]

Energized Turkish opposition puts Erdogan in real danger of losing power

(Worthy News) – A prolonged state of emergency after a failed coup attempt and a constitutional referendum that delivered Turkey’s president sweeping new powers should deliver strongman President Recep Tayyip Erdogan an easy win in Turkey’s June 24 snap elections, a vote moved up from November 2019.

But a reinvigorated opposition, demonstrating unexpected discipline, banded together to give Mr. Erdogan far more of a challenge than many had thought. An upset — or even a close result — could leave a major chink in the armor of the 64-year-old president, who has dominated the Turkish political scene for 15 years.

“The opposition seems much more energized, and we’re seeing that voters who traditionally supported the government are having second thoughts,” said Ilter Turan, a professor of political science at Istanbul Bilgi University. “The economy isn’t doing well, and they’re tired of seeing the same man on their TV screens all day, every day.” [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]
