Trump’s Mideast team gets close-up view of peace obstacles

(Worthy News) – On their current Mideast tour, senior Trump administration officials are getting a close-up view of some of the towering obstacles to their yet-to-be-released blueprint for an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal.

Blockaded Gaza — a likely focal point of any future U.S.-endorsed Palestinian entity — has been sinking deeper into a humanitarian crisis in recent months, while cross-border violence between Gaza’s Hamas rulers and Israel flared again this week.

Meanwhile, Hamas rival Mahmoud Abbas, the West Bank-based Palestinian leader, has hardened his rejection of any U.S. proposals, including large-scale Gaza aid projects meant to stabilize the territory. [ Source: Fox News (Read More…) ]

Coalition said drafting new bill to allow same-sex couples to adopt

(Worthy News) – A new bill being promoted by the coalition proposes allowing same-sex couples to adopt children in Israel, Hadashot TV news reported Wednesday, after an outcry last year when the Welfare Ministry announced — and then reversed — its opposition to the idea.

Hadashot TV reported that a draft has been completed for the bill, which is expected to be approved by Welfare Minister Haim Katz and Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked. The bill removes the current requirement for adopting parents to be a man and a woman.

The bill is expected to be finalized in July and will only be advanced in the next Knesset sitting, the report said. The current coalition makeup makes it difficult to pass laws advancing LGBT rights. Religious parties, who traditionally oppose such legislation, hold significant power within the coalition. World Health Organization Says Being Transgender No Longer Classified as Mental Illness

(Worthy News) – Being transgender is no longer classified as a mental illness by the World Health Organization – a key sign of progress for an often-marginalized community.

WHO announced Monday that in its newly released edition of the International Classification of Diseases, gender incongruence will now be classified as a sexual health condition.

“By changing the class of this condition, the WHO is effectively saying to everyone and to the world that this is not a mental disorder and we support people who are transgender,” Conti said. “It’s a really meaningful step because it promotes inclusivity, it promotes acceptance.” [ Source: USA Today (Read More…) ]

Hungary approves “STOP Soros” law, defying EU, rights groups

(Worthy News) – Hungary’s parliament on Wednesday approved a package of bills that criminalizes some help given to illegal immigrants, defying the European Union and human rights groups.

The legislation narrows the scope for action by non-governmental organizations (NGOs), making their workers liable for jail terms for helping migrants to seek asylum when they are not entitled to it.

Prime Minister Viktor Orban has led eastern European opposition to EU quotas that aim to distribute asylum seekers around the bloc, criticising the open-door policy that German Chancellor Angela Merkel proclaimed at the height of the European migrant crisis in 2015.
