Have You Counted the Cost? The Deadly Price of Spreading the Gospel Abroad

(Worthy News) – The plight of imprisoned Pastor Andrew Brunson shines a light on the darkness of persecuted Christians around the world.

Brunson was jailed in 2016 over charges he aided terrorist organizations. Supporters say it was actually over his Christian faith.

Meanwhile, three Americans were freed from a North Korea prison at the behest of President Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in May. Among them, missionary Kim Dong-chul. [ Source: CBN News (Read More…) ]

Supreme Court poised to rule on Trump travel ban, other cases

(Worthy News) – The U.S. Supreme Court, winding down its nine-month term, will issue rulings this week in its few remaining cases including a major one on the legality of President Donald Trump’s ban on people from five Muslim-majority nations entering the country.

The nine justices are due to decide other politically sensitive cases on whether non-union workers have to pay fees to unions representing certain public-sector workers such as police and teachers, and the legality of California regulations on clinics that steer women with unplanned pregnancies away from abortion.

The justices began their term in October and, as is their usual practice, aim to make all their rulings by the end of June, with more due on Monday. Six cases remain to be decided. [ Source: Reuters (Read More…) ]

Bye bye, boarding pass: US airport launches first-ever security checkpoints that scan your face

(Worthy News) – No wallet. No boarding pass. No phone. No problem. Americans are just a few years away from being able to show up at the airport with nothing but a suitcase in hand.

By as early as 2020, Americans will be able to travel by plane without any paper or digital documents thanks to major technological innovations in security procedures that U.S. Customs and Border Protection has already begun implementing at airports across the country.

“The future is a lane where you never slow down … that’s the future and it’s not very far – that’s two to four years out,” according to a senior Department of Homeland Security official who spoke at the International Summit on Borders in Washington last week. The event organizer did not allow reporters to identify speakers. [ Source: Washington Examiner (Read More…) ]

Pro-Assad troops take over Golan UN post in demilitarized area on Israeli border

(Worthy News) – Forces loyal to the regime of Syrian strongman Bashar Assad took control of an abandoned UN post in the no-man’s land between the Israeli and Syrian areas of the Golan Heights, Israel’s Kan public broadcaster reported on Sunday.

The post, abandoned by United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) troops on the Golan, is meant to be free of both Israeli and Syrian troops, according to the cessation of hostilities agreement between the two countries that followed the 1973 Yom Kippur War.

According to the report, UNDOF has identified ongoing infrastructure work at the site. [ Source: Times of Israel (Read More…) ]

Trump warns countries of retaliation over trade barriers

(Worthy News) – President Trump on Sunday warned other countries that the U.S. would retaliate if they placed trade barriers and tariffs on U.S. exports.

Trump’s tweet comes days after he threatened to impose a 20 percent tariff on all European cars entering the U.S.

Trump calls for deporting illegal immigrants with ‘no judges or court cases’

(Worthy News) – President Donald Trump said on Sunday that people who enter the United States illegally should be sent back to where they came from immediately without any judicial process.

Facing a public outcry and pressure even from within his Republican Party, Trump last week reversed his policy of separating migrant children from their parents at the border so the adults could be detained and prosecuted, a process that typically takes months.

Since buckling on the issue on Wednesday, Trump has redoubled his criticism of U.S. immigration laws on Twitter and in speeches where he likened illegal immigrants to invaders trying to “break into” the country. [ Source: CNBC (Read More…) ]

U.S. Plans Curbs on Chinese Investment, Citing Security Risk

(Worthy News) – The Treasury Department is planning to heighten scrutiny of Chinese investments in sensitive U.S. industries under an emergency law, putting Washington’s trade war with Beijing on a potentially irreversible course.

Under the plan, the White House would use one of the most significant legal measures available to declare China’s investment in U.S. companies involved in technologies such as new-energy vehicles, robotics and aerospace a threat to economic and national security, according to eight people familiar with the plans.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, in a report scheduled to be released on June 29, will suggest administering that law through an inter-agency government panel called the Committee on Foreign Investments in the U.S., or CFIUS, the people said, requesting anonymity to discuss the plans. Kushner to Palestinians: Don’t let your leaders reject a plan they haven’t seen

(Worthy News) – Senior White House adviser Jared Kushner appealed directly to the Palestinian people, urging them to not let their “scared” leadership reject the Trump administration peace plan, which the Palestinian Authority has yet to see. Directly critiquing Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, he said he was not sure Abbas truly wanted an accord.

In an interview with a Palestinian paper published Sunday, Kushner said he is ready to work with Abbas, but voiced doubt the 83-year-old leader has the ability or desire to make peace because he has not altered his negotiating position in over two decades.

“There have been countless mistakes and missed opportunities over the years, and you, the Palestinian people, have paid the price,” Kushner said, according to a transcript of the interview provided by the White House. “Don’t let your leadership reject a plan they haven’t even seen.” [ Source: Times of Israel (Read More…) ]

An unlikely group could get Oklahoma to greenlight medical marijuana: Evangelical Christians

(Worthy News) – Danny Daniels, an evangelical Christian in the rural Oklahoma town of Lindsay, is reliably conservative on just about every political issue.

The 45-year-old church pastor is anti-abortion, voted for President Donald Trump and is a member of the National Rifle Association who owns an AR-15 rifle. He also came of age during the 1980s and believed in the anti-drug mantra that labeled marijuana as a dangerous gateway drug.

But his view on marijuana changed as his pastoral work extended into hospice care and he saw patients at the end of their lives benefiting from the use of cannabis.

Daniels is among a growing group of traditionally conservative Republican voters in Oklahoma who have shifted their position on the topic. Their support for a medical marijuana measure on Tuesday’s ballot could ensure Oklahoma joins the growing list of states that have legalized some form of pot. Saudi air defenses intercept missiles above capital, coalition says

(Worthy News) – Saudi Arabia said on Sunday it had intercepted two missiles launched by Yemen’s Houthi militia over the capital Riyadh, as a Saudi-led coalition moved to wrest control of Yemen’s main port city from the Iran-aligned group.

At least six loud blasts were heard and bright flashes were seen in the sky over the Saudi capital, a Reuters witness said. Shrapnel was spotted on a street in the diplomatic quarter where most embassies are located and many foreigners live, but there was no serious damage.

“Saudi Royal Air Defence Forces intercepted and destroyed the missiles. Some of the debris of the intercepted missiles landed on residential areas, thankfully without causing any casualties,” coalition spokesman Colonel Turki al-Malki said in a statement. [ Source (Read More…) ]
