‘Even a blind person’ can see Mueller using Manafort to ‘target’ Trump: judge

(Worthy News) – A federal judge says “even a blind person” can see that Special Counsel Robert Mueller is prosecuting Paul Manafort as a way to acquire evidence against his “true target,” President Trump.

U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III made the comment in an opinion released this week that nonetheless sided with Mr. Mueller and against Mr. Trump’s former campaign manager. He rejected Mr. Manafort’s argument that the Mueller-brought tax-evasion indictment exceeded the special counsel’s authority and should be dismissed.

Sessions’ reversals on four Obama positions validated by Supreme Court

(Worthy News) – The Justice Department under Attorney General Jeff Sessions reversed positions of the Obama administration in four cases decided by the Supreme Court this year — and won all four of them.

They included constitutional technicalities, such as whether a certain set of appointments needed Senate confirmation, and politically charged cases over cutting names from voter lists and labor unions charging dues to unwilling workers.

“In four cases, after careful review, we changed the department’s position in order to follow the law,” Mr. Sessions said Wednesday as the court closed out its term. “The favorable Supreme Court decisions in all four cases reflect that we took the proper course of action. The decisions speak for themselves.” [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

Judge temporarily blocks abortion reporting rule in Indiana

(Worthy News) – A federal judge on Thursday temporarily blocked a new Indiana law’s requirement that medical providers report detailed patient information to the state if they treat women for complications arising from abortions.

U.S. District Court Judge Richard Young granted the preliminary injunction sought by Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky. The order blocks the provision in a state law taking effect Sunday.

The American Civil Liberties Union sued the state on behalf of the Planned Parenthood affiliate on April 23, arguing that the reporting provision was unconstitutional and imposed “unique and burdensome obligations.” The lawsuit contends that many of the purported complications listed in the law are extremely rare for abortions and “are more likely to occur after other medical procedures.” [ Source (Read More…) ]

Rod Rosenstein clashes with House Republicans amid documents dispute

(Worthy News) – Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein fended off feisty House Republicans at a Thursday committee hearing, amid the passage of a resolution that puts on the record a demand for a handful of Justice Department documents.

The hearing was a means for the House Judiciary Committee to question Rosenstein about the recent Justice Department’s inspector general report on the FBI’s investigations during the 2016 election — but GOP lawmakers seized the opportunity to chastise the department’s No. 2 for being slow to turn over subpoenaed documents.

In his opening statement, committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., said the panel’s “oversight has been hampered by both the FBI and DOJ’s lack of consistent and vigorous production of the documents we need to hold the agencies accountable.” [ Source: Washington Examiner (Read More…) ]

Palestinian Authority rejects Israeli, U.S. ideas to help Gaza

(Worthy News) – The Palestinian Authority on Tuesday expressed fear that the talk about easing restrictions on the Gaza Strip was part of an Israeli-Palestinian “conspiracy” to transform the Palestinian cause into a “humanitarian issue.”

The PA, which has been imposing its own financial sanctions on the Gaza Strip, also expressed fear that the easing of restrictions would embolden Hamas and tighten its grip over the coastal enclave.

Palestinian Authority officials in Ramallah claimed that the US administration and the Israeli government were now talking about improving the living conditions of the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip as a way of “undermining the Palestinian national project, including the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state.” [ Source: Jerusalem Post (Read More…) ]

Trump will demand of Putin a total Iranian exit from Syria — report

(Worthy News) – US President Donald Trump intends to demand from his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin a full Iranian pullout from Syria territory, making the subject a priority in talks between the two leaders planned for next month, the Arabic-language Al-Hayat newspaper reported Thursday.

Israel has urged the international community to oppose Iran’s military presence in Syria, fearing its arch-foe will set up forward bases to use in attacks on the Jewish state.

“If the Putin-Trump summit is held on July 15, its core will be to negotiate Washington’s insistence on Iran’s withdrawal from Syria,” a Western diplomat told the London-based daily. [ Source (Read More…) ]
