Death Toll in Jos, Nigeria Attacks at 218, including Pastor, Wife and Son

(Worthy News) – An Assemblies of God Nigeria pastor, his wife and son were among at least 218 people killed in Muslim Fulani herdsmen attacks on predominantly Christian areas near Jos on June 23-25, a denominational leader said.

Two days after the general superintendent of the AG-Nigeria denomination, the Rev. Chidi Okoroafor, reported the deaths of the Rev. Musa Choji and family members in the Barkin Ladi area near Jos, the federal government on Thursday (June 28) ordered the arrest of a pastor who organized protests of the killings, Christian leaders said.

The Rev. Isa Nenman, a pastor in Jos, was arrested on Thursday after the protests reportedly resulted in property destruction when he led demonstrators to the Government House, the residence of the governor of Plateau state, on Wednesday (June 27). Nenman is northern zone chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Plateau state chapter. [ Source: Morningstar News (Read More…) ]

U.N. expert: Israel moving closer to formal West Bank annexation

(Worthy News) – Israel has taken steps that could lead to the formal annexation of the West Bank, UN legal expert Michael Lynk said in advance of Monday’s United Nations Human Rights Council meeting on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

“After years of creeping Israeli de facto annexation of the large swathes of the West Bank through settlement expansion, the creation of closed military zones and other measures, Israel appears to be getting closer to enacting legislation that will formally annex parts of the West Bank,” Lynk said.

His words were posted Friday on the web site of the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. [ Source: Jerusalem Post (Read More…) ]

Trump warns NATO leaders defense underspending could have consequences

(Worthy News) – US President Donald Trump has admonished several leaders of NATO allies for spending too little on the organization and has warned of possible unspecified consequences, the New York Times reported Tuesday.

In a series of blunt letters to NATO members last month, Trump attacked what he called their failure to meet security obligations, diplomatic sources said.

Trump has frequently complained that the US is shouldering too much of the costs in the organization and that it is time other member countries helped to foot a larger portion of the bill. [ Source: Times of Israel (Read More…) ]

‘Insanity’: Rising Clean Rivers fee forces some D.C. churches to shut down

(Worthy News) – Nearly a decade after the District’s water authority levied a “Clean Rivers” surcharge to help clean up local waterways, faith community leaders say that ever-rising rates have forced them to cut back on services, lay off staff and — in at least 30 cases — move out or shut down completely.

Churches and other houses of worship, they say, have special operating requirements that add to the surcharge on their water bills.

The Clean Rivers Impervious Area Charge is based on the “impervious area” square footage of a property. The measure includes parking lots, sidewalks and any land that rainwater cannot permeate. Religious properties tend to own more impervious land than typical ratepayers, and even their cemeteries count against them when the tax is calculated.

The Clean Rivers charge first appeared on customers’ water bills on May 1, 2009, at $1.24 per equivalent residential unit, or square footage. By this year, the rate had skyrocketed to $25.18. Churches and synagogues routinely pay up to $15,000 a month. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

(Worthy News) – Special counsel Robert Mueller was granted wide latitude by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to pursue any alleged contact between Russia and the Trump campaign not matter how ‘stale’ it is, a judge said.

District Court Judge T.S. Ellis III, who is presiding over Mueller’s case against former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort, said Rosenstein’s guidelines state that Mueller can investigate “any links and/or coordination between the Russian government and individuals associated with the campaign of President Donald Trump.”

Trump makes veiled WTO threat after EU warning on car tariffs

(Worthy News) – U.S. President Donald Trump warned the World Trade Organization on Monday that “we’ll be doing something” if the United States is not treated properly, just hours after the European Union said that U.S. automotive tariffs would hurt its own vehicle industry and prompt retaliation.

Trump, speaking to reporters during a meeting with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte at the White House, said, “The WTO has treated the United States very, very badly and I hope they change their ways.”

His comments came after the Axios news website reported that Trump’s administration has drafted proposed legislation that would allow Trump to raise tariffs at will and negotiate special tariff rates with specific countries — two basic violations of WTO rules. [ Source: Reuters (Read More…) ]
