Kidnapped Nicaraguan Pastor Freed, Christian Translator Murdered in Front of His Children

(Worthy News) – According to producers with CBN’s Spanish language Christian World News program, a prominent pastor who was kidnapped by paramilitaries in the Nicaraguan city of Leon has been released.

CBN sources explained that 54-year-old Pastor Roberto Carlos Figueroa was kidnapped June 30, after he filed a defamation complaint with the Nicaraguan Center for Human Rights claiming paramilitaries had threatened and intimidated him.

Pastor Figueroa warned that if he disappeared, pro-government paramilitaries controlled by the FSLN would be responsible. The FSLN is the ruling Sandinista Party. They accused him of leading a group aggression against a young militant of the Sandinista party.

Christians also say pro-government paramilitaries killed a young Christian man in the town, a well-known translator named Luis. Witnesses said just before church services started at La Roca Church, armed men held a security guard hostage, vandalized the church building, and then murdered Luis in front of his children. 25 Preachers Accused of ‘Forced Conversions’ in India

(Worthy News) – Authorities in India’s eastern state of Jharkhand have accused 25 evangelists of allegedly trying to convert tribal Hindu villagers to Christianity.

The preachers, seven of whom are women, were sharing the gospel in a remote village some 180 miles east of the state’s capital when they were confronted by local villagers who reportedly got upset with their evangelistic activities.

“The villagers became angry when they began making disparaging comments about tribal places of worship — locally called ‘Manjhi Than’ and ‘Jaher Than’ —saying that Satan resided in such places,” a senior police officer with knowledge on the case told local media. “Angry villagers asked them to stop but they did not.” [ Source: CBN News (Read More…) ]

Federal judge tosses most of DoJ’s challenge to California’s ‘sanctuary’ laws

(Worthy News) – A federal judge on Monday dismissed several parts of the Justice Department’s lawsuit against California for its so-called “sanctuary” laws, which seek to limit federal power in enforcing immigration laws in the state.

Since the election of President Donald Trump, California lawmakers have passed several sanctuary laws, leading to a lawsuit filed by the DoJ in March to weaken or invalidate those laws.

But U.S. District Judge John Mendez dismissed the DoJ’s argument against three of those laws, giving states a stronger stance to limit federal enforcement of immigration law. [ Source: UPI (Read More…) ]

Republicans are running out of time

(Worthy News) – Republicans are running out of time. Today they control all of Washington. Come January, they may be confined to the White House.

The loss of even just the House of Representatives after the midterm elections in November, the likeliest scenario, would put Democrats in charge of originating tax and spending bills as well as initiating the impeachment process. If the Senate falls, it will stymie President Trump’s ability to fill executive and judicial branch vacancies.

Either chamber falling under Democratic control also means an uptick in congressional hearings about various scandals involving the Trump administration and its officials. Time devoted to Russian interference into the 2016 presidential election or potential violations of the emoluments clause will mean less time spent on Trump’s legislative priorities. And investigations targeting the administration will be covered more sympathetically than committee hearings on Whitewater or Benghazi. Additionally, lawmakers may augment or accelerate investigations that are already underway. [ Source: Washington Examiner (Read More…) ]

Archaeologists uncover gate to biblical city of Zer

(Worthy News) – Archaeologists have uncovered the entrance gate to the biblical city of Zer during excavations carried out in the Golan Heights over the past two weeks, the Golan Regional Council said Sunday.

In recent days, and after a year of recess, a group of 20 archaeologists from all over the world, together with director of the Bethsaida Project, Dr. Rami Arav, and under the auspices of the Hebrew Union College, Jerusalem, conducted new excavations in two different areas of Bethsaida. The ancient fishing village is mentioned several times in the New Testament as a city where Jesus lived and where he miraculously fed a multitude of people with five loaves and two fish.

Archaeologists said the size, wealth and impressive fortifications indicate that Zer was a major city. [ Source: Jerusalem Post (Read More…) ]

Mind-blowing 1,600-year-old biblical mosaics paint new picture of Galilean life

(Worthy News) – In its eighth dig season, the vibrant mosaic flooring of a fifth-century synagogue excavated in the small ancient Galilee village of Huqoq continues to surprise. The 2018 Huqoq dig has uncovered unprecedented depictions of biblical stories, including the Israelite spies in Canaan.

With its rich finds, the Byzantine-period synagogue busts scholars’ preconceived notions of a Jewish settlement in decline.

“What we found this year is extremely exciting,” University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Prof. Jodi Magness told The Times of Israel, saying the biblically based depictions are “unparalleled” and not found in any other ancient synagogue. [ Source: Times of Israel (Read More…) ]

1 in 4 children live in country of conflict or disaster, UN says

(Worthy News) – A quarter of the world’s children — about 535 million — are living in a country affected by conflict or disaster, the head of the UN children’s agency said Monday.

Henrietta Fore told a Security Council meeting on children and armed conflict that it is “almost beyond comprehension” that one of every four young people are caught in that situation.

She pointed to children and young people whose lives are being shattered by conflicts, including in Yemen, Mali and South Sudan. She also cited youngsters recruited to fight, killed by a land mine or an attack on their school, and “losing hope not only in their futures, but in the futures of their countries.” [ Source: Times of Israel (Read More…) ]

Syrian Muslim Brotherhood revives amid ongoing civil war, lashes out at the U.S. and Israel

(Worthy News) – The Syrian Civil War, which has lasted more than seven years, has claimed the lives of at least 500,000 people, displaced more than 12 million from their homes and cost others, too many to count, their arms and legs, each victim lost in the fog of war.

And yet, Syrian President Bashar Assad – who has been widely accused by the international community of targeting civilians and being responsible for the majority of deaths – looks set to take back full control of the once opposition-held Daraa province, a step closer to presiding fully over the embattled country with impunity.

It’s a reality, the recently revived Syrian Muslim Brotherhood says, which will only lead to more bloodshed and instability in the years to come – with or without an official war. [ Source: Fox News (Read More…) ]
