Twin Wildfires Near Athens, Greece Kill 20, Gut Vacation Resorts

(Worthy News) – Gale-fanned wildfires raged through holiday resorts near Greece’s capital, killing at least 20 people by early Tuesday and injuring more than 104, including 11 in serious condition, in the deadliest blaze to hit the country in more than a decade.

Greece sought international help through the European Union as the fires on either side of Athens left lines of cars torched, charred farms and forests, and sent hundreds of people racing to beaches to be evacuated by navy vessels, yachts, and fishing boats.

Winds reached 80 kph (50 mph) as authorities deployed the country’s entire fleet of water-dropping planes and helicopters to give vacationers time to escape. Military drones remained in the air in the high winds to help officials direct more than 600 firefighters below. [ Source: CBN News (Read More…) ]

50,000 US Troops in Range of Iranian Weapons, Regime Figure Wanted For Terrorism Warns Trump

(Worthy News) – As the Iranian regime responded to President Trump’s fiery warning tweet, one official issued a veiled threat against 50,000 U.S. troops within range of Iranian weapons, another reminded him of the rise and fall of empires, and a media mouthpiece envisaged the president facing divine retribution for threatening a country whose laws are based on Allah’s commandments.

There was no public reaction from Khamenei or Rouhani, but one prominent regime figure who did respond was Mohsen Rezai, a former commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) who for the past two decades has been secretary of the Expediency Council, a body that advises Khamenei.

“Iran’s sword is hanging over the heads of more than 50,000 of your troops, and you are threatening this madly,” he said in a Farsi-language tweet directed at Trump. “You be cautious.” [ Source: CNS News (Read More…) ]

Hawaii eruption could last years, destroy new areas: geologists

(Worthy News) – The eruption of Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano could last for months or years and threaten new communities on the Big Island, according to a report by U.S. government geologists.

A main risk is a possible change in the direction of a lava flow that would destroy more residential areas after at least 712 homes were torched and thousands of residents forced to evacuate since Kilauea began erupting on May 3, the report by the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said.

A higher volume of molten rock is flowing underground from Kilauea’s summit lava reservoir than in previous eruptions, with supply to a single giant crack — fissure 8 — showing no sign of waning, according to the study published last week. [ Source: Reuters (Read More…) ]

Trump considering pulling security clearances of critics

(Worthy News) – Six former national security officials are being targeted by President Donald Trump for their criticism of his administration. In an unprecedented move, the president is considering revoking their security clearances, making them ineligible for access to the nation’s closely held secrets.

The six have served in both Republican and Democratic administration, including Trump’s. They are former CIA Directors John Brennan and Michael Hayden; former FBI Director Jim Comey; former director of national intelligence James Clapper; former national security adviser Susan Rice; and former FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders has accused the former officials of having politicized and in some cases made money from their public service and security clearances with what she calls “baseless accusations” about the Trump administration and Russia. Boulder Falls From Jerusalem’s Western Wall, Barely Missing Worshipper

(Worthy News) – An elderly worshipper had a close call on Monday when a 100-kilogram (220-pound) stone suddenly fell from Jerusalem’s Western Wall and crashed at her feet.

The Israel Antiquities Authority said the boulder may have been dislodged by erosion caused by vegetation or moisture in the biblical wall, the holiest place where Jews are permitted to pray.

“I didn’t hear or feel anything until it landed right at my feet,” Daniella Goldberg, a 79-year-old Jerusalem resident who had gone to the wall in the early morning to worship, told Reuters. [ Source: Algemeiner (Read More…) ]

In operational debut, David’s Sling defense system fires at missiles launched in Syria

(Worthy News) – Israel’s David’s Sling air defense system made its operational debut Monday, when an interceptor missile was launched as a precaution against ballistic missiles fired within neighboring Syria, the military said.

Projectiles fired as part of internal fighting between the Syrian army and rebel forces in southwest Syria triggered early warning sirens in northern Israel, but were unlikely to have been aimed at Israeli targets, the IDF statement stressed.

An initial investigation into the incident revealed that the missiles had been fired at Israel’s direction and the defense system identified their trajectory as being on track to strike within Israeli territory. [ Source: Israel Hayom (Read More…) ]

UN rights chief slams Israel over Gaza border deaths and nation-state bill

(Worthy News) – The UN human rights chief sharply criticized Israel on Monday, calling recent killings by its soldiers during Palestinian demonstrations along the Gaza border fence “shocking.”

Recent months have seen an uptick in violence on Israel’s border with Gaza and violent clashes at weekly protests. Friday saw the killing of an IDF soldier by terrorists, massive airstrikes in Gaza and the firing of hundreds of rockets and mortars into Israel.

In addition, Palestinians in Gaza have launched many hundreds of kites, balloons and inflated latex condoms bearing flammable materials, and occasionally explosives, into Israeli territory, sparking near-daily fires that have burned thousands of acres of farmland, parks and forests. US group: North Korea dismantling key launch site facilities

(Worthy News) – A U.S. research group says North Korea has started dismantling key facilities at its main satellite launch site in what appears to be a step toward fulfilling a commitment made by leader Kim Jong Un at his summit with President Donald Trump in June.

An official from South Korea’s presidential office on Tuesday said Seoul has also been detecting dismantlement activities at North Korea’s Sohae launch site but did not specify what the North was supposedly taking apart.

While the official said such moves could have a “positive effect” on the North’s denuclearization, analysts say such steps wouldn’t reduce North Korea’s military capabilities unless the country dismantles the whole site. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]
