Trump exhorts his voters to stay the course on trade wars

(Worthy News) – President Trump is urging Americans feeling the pinch from international trade policy disputes, as well as congressional Republicans who fear his tariffs will wipe out the economic boom right before the midterm elections, to endure the pain just a little bit longer.

Trade wars were there to be won, Trump said Thursday, citing the reopening of a U.S. Steel plant in Granite City, Ill., after the imposition of steel and aluminum tariffs as the kind of “great victory” for American workers a change in trade policy could make possible.

“After years of shutdowns and cutbacks, today the blast furnace here in Granite City is blazing bright, workers are back on the job, and we are once again pouring new American steel back into the spine of our country,” he said in a wide-ranging speech at the facility, where employees praised the president for saving their jobs. Legal implications on Trump or Cohen unclear on secret tape

(Worthy News) – A secret recording of Donald Trump discussing payments to a Playboy model has brought renewed attention to the question of whether – and how – he might have tried to block politically damaging stories ahead of the 2016 presidential election. But it’s not clear that the tape, on its own, creates additional legal problems for the president.

The September 2016 conversation between Trump and his then-lawyer, Michael Cohen, took place weeks after the National Enquirer’s parent company reached a $150,000 deal to pay former Playboy model Karen McDougal for her story of a 2006 affair she says she had with Trump. The recording captures Trump and Cohen discussing acquiring the rights to McDougal’s story and whether to pay by cash or check.

At issue is whether the payment the men are discussing was campaign-related and intended to influence the election, in which case it would likely be regarded as a contribution, or whether it was merely meant to shield the married Trump from an embarrassing revelation harmful to his personal life. Also important is whether the payment to McDougal from the Enquirer’s parent company, American Media Inc., functioned as a backdoor campaign contribution or as a legitimate media company expense. Trump thanks Kim as North Korea transfers remains of missing U.S. soldiers

(Worthy News) – North Korea transferred 55 small, flag-draped cases carrying the suspected remains of U.S. soldiers killed in the Korean War on Friday, officials said, a first step in implementing an agreement reached in a landmark summit in June.

The repatriation of the remains missing in the 1950-53 conflict is seen as a modest diplomatic coup for U.S. President Donald Trump as it was one of the agreements reached during his meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore aimed primarily at securing the denuclearization of the North.

“After so many years, this will be a great moment for so many families. Thank you to Kim Jong Un,” Trump wrote on Twitter. [ Source: Reuters (Read More…) ]

Blood moon tonight: How to Watch the Longest ‘Blood Moon’ Eclipse of the Century

(Worthy News) – Get ready for a celestial double feature unlike anything seen in decades: Mars is about to make its closest approach to Earth in 15 years—just as the full moon blushes red in the longest “blood moon” eclipse of the century.

Both the moon and Mars will dominate the overnight hours on July 27 and into the morning of July 28, traveling across the sky beside each other while appearing to be separated by only five degrees, equal to the width of three middle fingers held at arm’s length.

On the 27th, the red planet will swing the closest it has come to Earth since August 2003, allowing sky-watchers around the world to see our neighboring world about as big and bright it can ever get in our skies. [ Source: National Geographic (Read More…) ]

Wipeout! Facebook sheds $100 billion in market value on fears about user growth

(Worthy News) – Facebook shares dove 19 percent Thursday, shedding about $100 billion in market value, for the biggest one-day wipeout of stock market value for any U.S. company.

The decline, fueled by the social network’s slowing growth, marked Facebook’s largest market drop ever, eclipsing a 12 percent drop on July 27, 2012. Another 7 percent drop on March 19, the Monday after news of the Cambridge Analytica crisis broke, caused a $36.4 billion decline in Facebook’s market value.

Facebook’s one-day swoon surpassed Intel’s $91 billion loss in September 2000, the previous largest loss of value in one day, according to Bloomberg. The drop was based on all shares outstanding, Bloomberg said. [ Source: USA Today (Read More…) ]

Iranian general warns Trump that ‘nation of martyrdom’ is waiting for him

(Worthy News) – A top Iranian general said his forces were ready if US President Donald Trump followed through on his warning that Iran would “suffer consequences” if Tehran threatened the United States.

Though Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Wednesday there was no need for him to “respond to any nonsensical comment,” Gen. Qassem Soleimani, who heads the elite Quds Force of Iran’s hardline paramilitary Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, said on Thursday that he had an obligation to reply.

“As a soldier, it is my duty to respond to Trump’s threats. If he wants to use the language of threat, he should talk to me, not to the president,” Reuters quoted him as saying, citing comments reported by the news website Young Journalists Club, which is affiliated with state-run television. Rep. Jim Jordan wants to replace Ryan as House Speaker

(Worthy News) – Rep. Jim Jordan announced Thursday that he will try next year to become leader of the House Republican caucus, accelerating what’s likely to be a deeply divisive fight over the direction of the GOP.

The Ohio Republican is challenging Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California, the current majority leader and front-runner to succeed outgoing Speaker Paul D. Ryan, who is retiring at the end of this year.

Mr. Jordan said he will seek the post if Republicans manage to keep their majority in this year’s elections, vowing to be a firmer supporter of President Trump’s agenda. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

Jordanians rally against ‘normalization’ with Israel over gas pipeline

(Worthy News) – From across the country, a small but determined contingent of Jordanians arrived outside of Irbid, Jordan’s second-largest city, to protest on Wednesday an agreement to import Israeli natural gas to the kingdom.

The day was hot, the crowd small. Holding signs in blue, white and red reading “No to Normalization” and “Our Blood Isn’t Worth Gas,” the assembled demonstrators marched along the proposed route for a natural gas pipeline that would link the two countries.

Demonstrators placed red stickers emblazoned with “The Enemy’s Gas is the Occupation” along piping which, organizers said, would be used to construct the line linking the two countries. [ Source: Times of Israel (Read More…) ]

Abbas’s Fatah: Israel planning to destroy Al-Aqsa Mosque

(Worthy News) – The stone that fell from the Western Wall earlier this week proves that Israel has devised a plan to destroy the al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, a spokesperson for the ruling Fatah faction headed by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas claimed on Thursday.

An Israel Antiquities Authority crane on Wednesday removed the 200-kg. ashlar, which fell into the nearly-empty egalitarian plaza, also known as the “Ezrat Yisrael.” No one was hurt.

Osama Qawassmeh, a spokesperson for Fatah, said on Thursday that the dislodging of the stone was a “dangerous sign of what was happening in the al-Aqsa Mosque and its surroundings” – a reference to the archaeological work that has been going on near the Temple Mount for decades in the site called the Davidson Center, the Jerusalem Archaeological Park.
