Kavanaugh gets Rand Paul’s vote, meets with key Democrat

(Worthy News) – Supreme Court nominee Brett M. Kavanaugh won the support of one critical Republican senator Monday and met privately with a key Democrat as he inches closer to securing enough votes for confirmation to the high court.

Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, one of a few Republicans who had not immediately backed President Trump’s nominee publicly, said he was assuaged after his meeting last week that Judge Kavanaugh would bring an open mind to privacy cases and be a strong supporter of First and Second Amendment rights.

“My conversation with Judge Kavanaugh reinforces my belief that he will evaluate cases before the Supreme Court from a textual and originalist point of view,” Mr. Paul said. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

Congress set to dodge tick-tock of shutdown clock

(Worthy News) – Four months after President Trump warned he would “never again” sign a massive federal spending bill containing areas he wants to cut, Congress has finally made some progress reforming its long-broken process of appropriating annual government funding and trying to get it done on time.

But it could mean Trump will have to wait for Congress to allocate the kind of money he is seeking to fund a southern border wall.

Republicans and Democrats are both eager to avoid spending showdowns and the specter of cable news “shutdown” clocks ahead of the November midterm elections. It’s pushed the two sides to work together to at least advance half of the dozen spending measures that fund the government and must pass by Sept. 30, the end of the fiscal year. Christian LGBT Conference Concerns Southern Baptist Leaders

(Worthy News) – Southern Baptist leaders have spoken out about this past weekend’s Revoice Conference for LGBT Christians. Many are concerned and ‘troubled’ by the conference, while others think it may bring about an important conversation.

The Revoice Conference, which met this past weekend in St. Louis, defines itself as “Supporting, encouraging, and empowering gay, lesbian, same-sex-attracted, and other LGBT Christians so they can flourish while observing the historic, Christian doctrine of marriage and sexuality.”

Albert Mohler, President of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, said of Revoice:

“It is encouraging that they state their intention to hold to a biblical understanding of sexual behavior and to define the only appropriate expression of sexual behavior to be marriage as the union of a man and a woman,” the Baptist Press quotes, “‘But that said, it appears they’re trying to create a halfway house” between cultural norms and biblical morality “that is inherently unstable. There is no way that faithful Christians can celebrate an unbiblical sexual orientation and claim to be faithful to Scripture… The moment you begin identifying as an LGBTQ+ Christian, you’ve created an unstable identity.” Humans “have a pattern of sexual attraction, but for Christians, our ultimate identity must be in Christ.’” [ Source: Christian Headlines (Read More…) ]

‘Clade X’ Simulation Reveals Pandemic Could Wipe Out 900 Million People

(Worthy News) – Scientists warn that a new pathogen could kill almost 10 percent of the world’s population of 7.6 billion people.

Researchers at John Hopkins University used a computer to simulate the spread of a new type of “parainfluenza,” called “Clade X,” by a terrorist group.

The researchers say the simulation would have ended with up to 900 million dead. What is even more alarming is that the pathogen as designed was no more dangerous than SARS, a virus that killed 775 people worldwide. [ Source: CBN News (Read More…) ]

Israel trying to prevent a massacre of Syrians on Golan Heights border

(Worthy News) – Israel has reportedly asked Russia to ensure that Syrian government forces do not harm or massacre civilians in the south of the war-torn country as they complete their takeover of the area bordering Israel’s Golan Heights from rebel groups.

Israeli officials passed on the message to the Kremlin via diplomatic channels, Hadashot news reported Monday night, as the Syrian government regained control of the frontier for the first time in seven years, after Islamic State-linked militants gave up their last pocket of territory in the area.

Israel has been carrying out operations to this effect, the report said, without giving any specifics. [ Source: Times of Israel (Read More…) ]

US mulls another drastic cut to Palestinian aid agency’s budget

(Worthy News) – U.S. lawmakers have introduced a new piece of legislation that would drastically reduce U.S. funding for the United Nations relief agency for Palestinian refugees, known as UNRWA.

The United States is UNRWA’s biggest contributor. In January, the State Department notified the agency that the U.S. would be withholding $65 million of the $125 million earmarked for it, saying that additional U.S. donations would be contingent on major changes by UNRWA.

UNRWA says there are 5.2 million Palestinian refugees. However, this is mainly because it considers the descendants of Palestinians that were displaced in 1948 as having refugee status even if they are not living as refugees. [ Source: Israel Hayom (Read More…) ]

Syria boots IS from Golan Heights, retaking full control of frontier with Israel

(Worthy News) – The Syrian government regained control of the frontier with the Israel’s Golan Heights for the first time in seven years on Monday, after Islamic State-linked militants gave up their last pocket of territory in the area.

The breakthrough against the militants, reported by state media and an opposition-linked war monitoring group, capped a six-week-long bloody campaign to retake the southwest corner of the country.

Rebels captured the area along the Golan Heights after a popular uprising broke out against Syrian President Bashar Assad in 2011. An IS-linked outfit known as the Khaled bin Al-Waleed Army later seized the area from the opposition fighters. [ Source: Times of Israel (Read More…) ]

Iranian Regime Says It’s Not Interested in Negotiating With US

(Worthy News) – President Trump’s comment Monday that he was ready to meet with Iranian leaders came just hours after the regime’s foreign ministry rejected the idea of negotiations with the U.S., saying Washington had proven to be ‘untrustworthy’ and dismissing reports speculating that mediation efforts may be underway.

Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman, Bahram Qassemi, on Monday dismissed as “media speculation” any suggestion that Iran and the U.S. could hold talks, or that the Omani foreign minister’s visit to the U.S. was linked to the issue.

After the “illegal” withdrawal from the JCPOA and the bringing to bear of economic pressures against Iran, “there are no conditions for such a discussion at all,” state media quoted Qassemi as telling a briefing.

Trump says he is willing to talk to Iran’s leader without preconditions

(Worthy News) – U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday he would be willing to meet Iran’s leader without preconditions to discuss how to improve ties after he pulled the United States out of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, saying, ‘If they want to meet, we’ll meet.’

“I’d meet with anybody. I believe in meetings,” especially in cases where war is at stake, Trump said at a White House news conference when asked whether he was willing to meet with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.

In response, Iran said the way back to talks was for the United States to return to the nuclear deal between Iran and six major powers that Trump exited in May. [ Source: Reuters (Read More…) ]

Two Koreas hold military talks as U.S. detects activity at North Korea missile factory

(Worthy News) – North and South Korea held military talks on Tuesday amid rising tensions after the United States detected renewed activity at a North Korean missile factory.

The meeting, their second since June, held in the border village of Panmunjom in the demilitarized zone (DMZ), was designed to follow on from an inter-Korean summit in April at which leaders of the two Koreas agreed to defuse tensions and halt “all hostile acts.”

Kim Do-gyun, the South’s chief negotiator who is in charge of North Korea policy at the defense ministry, told reporters before leaving for the DMZ that he would make efforts to craft “substantive” measures to ease tensions and build trust. [ Source: Reuters (Read More…) ]
