UN: Ceasefire violations may spark Lebanon-Israel conflict

(Worthy News) – The UN Security Council warned Thursday that violations of the ceasefire agreement between Lebanon and Israel could lead to a new conflict and urged international support for Lebanon’s armed forces and their stepped-up deployment in the south and at sea.

The council’s warning against “a new conflict that none of the parties or the region can afford” came in a resolution adopted unanimously extending the mandate of the UN peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon known as UNIFIL until August 31, 2019.

Council members urged “all parties” to exercise “maximum calm and restraint and refrain from any action or rhetoric that could jeopardize the cessation of hostilities or destabilize the region.” [ Source: Ynet News (Read More…) ]

U.N. fears chemical weapons in Syria battle with ‘10,000 terrorists’

(Worthy News) – The United Nations called on Russia, Iran and Turkey on Thursday to forestall a battle in Syria’s Idlib province which would affect millions of civilians and could see both sides using chlorine as a chemical weapon.

UN Syria envoy Staffan de Mistura told reporters that there was a high concentration of foreign fighters in Idlib, including an estimated 10,000 terrorists, but it would be better to set up humanitarian corridors to evacuate civilians than rush into a battle which could turn prove to be a “perfect storm.” [ Source: Jerusalem Post (Read More…) ]

Trump to sign executive order to boost retirement savings

(Worthy News) – President Donald Trump will sign an executive order on Friday aimed at boosting retirement savings, giving Americans more time to keep their money in tax-deferred accounts and allowing small businesses to band together to offer 401(k)s.

The order, to be issued by Trump during a visit to Charlotte, N.C., will call on the Treasury Department to review its rules for mandatory withdrawals from 401(k) plans and individual retirement accounts, administration officials told reporters on a Thursday evening call.

Generally, people must start withdrawing funds from these accounts when they turn 70-and-a-half. The Treasury rules have not been updated since 2002, said Daniel Kowalski, counselor to the Treasury secretary. [ Source: Politico (Read More…) ]

Coptic Christians find strength in faith and community of asylum seekers in Virginia

(Worthy News) – Fayza Estephanos knows exactly how long it has been since she learned that two of her brothers were among 21 Egyptian Coptic Christians kidnapped and beheaded by the Islamic State in 2015 — three years, six months.

Speaking through an interpreter at her home in Centreville, Virginia, the 43-year-old asylum-seeker from Egypt works hard to tamp down her emotions as she tells how her brothers never renounced their faith, even under torture, even under the threat of a horrific death. Her own faith, she said, was tested between the time her family first heard of her brothers’ abduction and watched a videotape of their slaughter on a Libyan beach.

“I spent two days in the hospital. I was unable to talk or utter a word because of the shock,” she said. “That was the situation. My brother, father, sister — the same thing. The shock was not just our family. It was 13 families from the same village that went through the same thing. Every household had this shock.” [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]
