Fueled by Swing With Independents, Plurality Supports Kavanaugh’s Confirmation to Supreme Court

(Worthy News) – A new Quinnipiac poll shows increased public support for Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the Supreme Court, fueled by an eight-point swing in his favor by independents.

Forty-four percent of respondents believe the U.S. Senate should confirm Kavanaugh, with 39 percent saying they shouldn’t and 17 percent saying they didn’t know or having no response. Independents favor Kavanaugh in the poll by a 44-to-36 percent margin.

Senate Democrats appear unlikely to stop Kavanaugh’s confirmation, given they need to flip a minimum of two Republicans and none have expressed any indication they will vote him down. Kavanaugh has also met with Sens. Joe Manchin (D., W. Va.), Heidi Heitkamp (N.D.), and Joe Donnelly (D, Ind.), the three Democrats who voted to confirm Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court in 2017. ‘There Are No Girls Left’: Syria’s Christian Villages Hollowed Out by ISIS

(Worthy News) – The number of Christians across the Middle East has been declining for decades as persecution and poverty have led to widespread migration. The Islamic State, also known as ISIS, considered Christians infidels and forced them to pay special taxes, accelerating the trend in Syria and Iraq.

In this area of Syria, the exodus has been swift.

Some 10,000 Assyrian Christians lived in more than 30 villages here before the war began in 2011, and there were more than two dozen churches. Now, about 900 people remain and only one church holds regular services, said Shlimon Barcham, a local official with the Assyrian Church of the East. [ Source: NY Times (Read More…) ]

An official in the US administration who spoke on condition of anonymity divulged the information on the two leaders’ encounter, adding that Moscow had made it clear that removing Iranian forces from Syrian territory would prove a difficult task.

The White House published few details about the meeting, but according to an official familiar with the details, a significant part of the discussions were dedicated to the ongoing civil war in Syria and the functions being carried out there by Iran. [ Source: Ynet News (Read More…) ]

Drying Lake Mead could trigger federal water shortage by 2020

(Worthy News) – Nevada’s Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the West, could fall below a critical threshold in just two years if a new forecast by the Bureau of Reclamation is correct.

A report Wednesday said there is a 52 percent chance that water levels at the lake will fall below 1,075 feet elevation by 2020. If that happens, it could trigger the first-ever federal shortage declaration on the Colorado River, a reservoir that supplies water to 40 million people.

Colorado River users are hoping regional efforts to conserve water pay off and leave enough of their unused supplies in the lake to stave off a shortage declaration. [ Source: UPI (Read More…) ]
