Bolton says no timetable for Trump’s Mideast peace plan

(Worthy News) – President Donald Trump’s national security adviser says there’s no timetable for releasing the administration’s much-anticipated Mideast peace plan.

John Bolton said Wednesday in Jerusalem that a “lot of progress” has been made, but he refused to speculate what the plan entailed or when it may be publicized. The Trump administration recently began staffing its Mideast policy team ahead of the plan’s expected release.

Trump officials have long promised the most comprehensive package ever put forward toward resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The Palestinians have indicated they consider it a non-starter given Trump’s bias toward Israel and his unilateral recognition of Jerusalem as its capital. [ Source: Fox News (Read More…) ]

Data duel: Are gun-free zones really safer?

(Worthy News) – Children are heading back to school with the debate over gun safety still raging six months after the Parkland massacre — and no issue is more heated than whether gun-free zones make students safer or more endangered.

A study by John R. Lott Jr., a gun crimes researcher, said close to 98 percent of mass shootings happen in gun-free zones, suggesting that they do little to stop, and may even invite, rampages.

His latest study looked at mass shootings from 1950 through May of this year and concluded that 97.8 percent of the attacks took place in areas that he defined as gun-free zones — areas where the average citizen can’t carry guns. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

Al Qaeda bomb maker killed in Yemen drone strike last year, US official confirms

(Worthy News) – A top Al Qaeda bomb maker who masterminded a plot to bring down an airliner over Detroit on Christmas Day 2009 was killed in a U.S. drone strike in Yemen last year, a senior U.S. official told Fox News Monday.

The Associated Press previously reported that Ibrahim al-Asiri was dead, citing a tribal leader and an Al Qaeda-linked source who said that he was killed in the governate of Marib in eastern Yemen.

The U.S. has long viewed Al Qaeda’s Yemeni branch as its most dangerous affiliate, in part because of al-Asiri’s expertise in explosives. Since 2014, the U.S. has offered $5 million for information leading to his capture. He is thought to have escaped death many times in U.S. drone strikes in Yemen. [ Source: Fox News (Read More…) ]

An earthquake swarm jolts Indonesian islands, killing at least 12 people

(Worthy News) – Multiple strong earthquakes killed at least a dozen people on the Indonesian islands of Lombok and Sumbawa as the region was trying to recover from a temblor earlier this month that killed hundreds of people.

A shallow magnitude 6.9 quake that hit about 10 p.m. was one of several powerful earthquakes Sunday in the northeast of Lombok that also caused landslides. The nighttime quake was followed by strong aftershocks.

At least 10 people on Lombok and neighboring Sumbawa island were killed by collapsing buildings or heart attacks, National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said Monday. Two people died earlier Sunday on Lombok during a magnitude 6.3 quake.

Sunday night’s tremor occurred on a different fault and was not an aftershock of the magnitude 7.0 quake on Aug. 5 that killed 460 people, damaged tens of thousands of homes and displaced several hundred thousand people. [ Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (Read More…) ]

Stocks reach new all-time high, despite Trump’s trade threats and Fed criticisms

(Worthy News) – Stock markets hit a new all-time high Tuesday as they approached the longest bull market in modern history, despite President Trump’s recent statements on trade and monetary policy that have unnerved some business leaders.

The S&P 500 reached 2,873.23, just beating the prior record of 2,872.87 set in January. On Wednesday, the bull market, meaning the time without a major downturn, will have officially run 3,453 consecutive days, a streak stretching back to March 2009.

The high came despite Trump rattling things by slamming the Federal Reserve for raising interest rates and the administration barreling ahead toward escalating its trade dispute with China by placing 25 percent tariffs on an additional $200 billion of Chinese goods. Medicare could have saved nearly $1 billion by using generics, study finds

(Worthy News) – Medicare could have saved nearly $1 billion in 2016 if it used generic versions of pricey combination drug-device products instead of the brand name versions, according to a new study.

The study, published Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association, indicates that Medicare is doing an inadequate job of getting doctors to prescribe more generic drugs. The Trump administration released a blueprint in May to tackle drug prices, but it does not include anything to get doctors to prescribe more generics.

The report looked at Medicare spending in 2016 for brand-name combination products, which are combinations of drugs and devices. An example of a combination product is a stent that is coated with a drug and implanted in the body. [ Source: Washington Examiner (Read More…) ]

Manafort, Cohen developments fuel partisan furor over Mueller probe

(Worthy News) – The conviction of Paul Manafort and guilty plea by Michael Cohen on Tuesday fortified both the pro- and anti-Trump camps in the political war over special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe.

President Trump once again decried the Mueller probe as a “witch hunt.” The president’s supporters argued that the conviction and guilty plea underscored that the Trump campaign did not collude with the Kremlin to rig the 2016 presidential election.

“Where’s the collusion? You know they are still looking for collusion,” Mr. Trump quipped at a rally in Charleston, West Virginia, Tuesday night. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]
