Powerful Quake Hits Northern Japan, at Least 20 Injured

(Worthy News) – A powerful earthquake shook Japan’s northernmost main island of Hokkaido early Thursday, causing landslides that crushed homes, knocking out power across the island, and forcing a nuclear power plant to use a backup generator.

The magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck southern Hokkaido at 3:08 a.m. Thursday at the depth of 40 kilometers (24 miles), Japan’s Meteorological Agency said. The epicenter was east of the city of Tomakomai but the shaking also affected Hokkaido’s prefectural capital of Sapporo, with a population of 1.9 million.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told a news conference that the authorities have received hundreds of calls about people missing and buildings collapsing. Officials are doing their utmost for the search and rescue while they assess the extent of damage, he said. [ Source: CBN News (Read More…) ]

Hamas leader admits Marches of Return were staged to avert internal crisis

(Worthy News) – Gaza’s Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar openly admitted on Tuesday that the weekly “March of Return” protests staged on the Gaza border in recent months were intended to avert an internal crisis and divert pressure onto the Israelis.

After the reconciliation efforts (between Hamas and Fatah) reached an impasse, a number of factions planned to cause an internal explosion in the Gaza Strip, but the Marches of Return thwarted the plan,” Sinwar said during a Hamas conference in the coastal enclave.

“Palestinian officials collaborated with Israeli intelligence in order to sabotage the reconciliation efforts,” he claimed. [ Source: YNet News (Read More…) ]

Judge blocks Texas fetal burial law, attorney general vows to appeal

(Worthy News) – A federal judge has blocked a Texas law from going into effect that would force clinics to bury or cremate fetal remains after an abortion.

The permanent injunction was issued Wednesday by U.S. District Judge David Ezra in Austin, Texas. In his decision, Ezra said that the law placed a “substantial obstacle” in the way of women who seek abortions.

“The evidence in this case overwhelmingly demonstrated that if the challenged laws were to go into effect now, they would likely cause a near catastrophic failure of the healthcare system designed to serve women of childbearing age within the state of Texas,” Ezra wrote in the decision. The law required every healthcare facility in the state to provide a death certificate and proper burial for any fetal tissue. [ Source: Washington Examiner (Read More…) ]

New York Times publishes opinion piece from anonymous senior Trump administration official

(Worthy News) – The New York Times opinion pages took a rare action Wednesday, granting anonymity to a senior Trump administration official to publish an opinion piece about how administration officials are working to undermine the president.

“The dilemma — which [President Trump] does not fully grasp — is that many of the senior officials in his own administration are working diligently from within to frustrate parts of his agenda and his worst inclinations. I would know. I am one of them,” the writer says.

The administration official questions Trump’s ability to effectively lead the country, explaining that many senior administration officials, including those loyal to the president’s agenda, “believe our first duty is to this country, and the president continues to act in a manner that is detrimental to the health of our republic.” [ Source: Washington Examiner (Read More…) ]
