Gingrich, Republicans float new Contract with America ahead of midterms

(Worthy News) – Republicans have poll-tested a Contract with America-style agenda to carry into the fall elections as they ponder whether they need to give voters a bolder plan for what they will do if they keep control of Congress.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, author of the 1994 contract that powered Republicans to their first House majority in decades, has been making the case for nationalizing the campaign.

John McLaughlin, a pollster, has tested one version of a national agenda that would involve Republicans backing term limits, paid parental leave and another round of tax cuts. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

Democrats to delay Kavanaugh vote until next week

(Worthy News) – Democrats are poised to block a Thursday committee vote to advance the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, placed Kavanaugh’s nomination on Thursday’s schedule. But Democrats will likely use a committee rule that allows them to keep the nomination on hold for at least another week.

That means a Judiciary Committee vote on Kavanaugh isn’t likely to happen until Sept. 20 at the earliest. [ Source: Washington Examiner (Read More…) ]

House bill to delay or repeal parts of Obamacare would cost nearly $52B: CBO

(Worthy News) – A House bill to delay or repeal certain parts Obamacare would cost the federal government $51.6 billion over a decade, according to a new government analysis released Tuesday.

The latest report, from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, comes ahead of a meeting House lawmakers have scheduled for Wednesday to discuss the bill, known as the Save American Workers Act.

One portion of the bill that would cost $25.9 billion from 2019 to 2028 is the delay of what is known as the “employer mandate.” It originally was intended to go into effect in 2014 and required companies with 50 or more full-time workers provide health insurance or otherwise face a penalty. The mandate was delayed several times with bipartisan support, but it applied to companies with 100 workers or more beginning in 2015. [ Source: Washington Examiner (Read More…) ]

Al-Qaeda leader: Moving embassy to Jerusalem is proof the US is enemy of Islam

(Worthy News) – Marking the 17th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, the leader of al-Qaeda on Tuesday called on Muslims to wage war against the United States throughout the world.

In a 30-minute speech released Tuesday, Ayman al-Zawahiri went to great lengths to portray the United States as a religious enemy of Muslims, using Washington’s transfer of its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem as evidence of that enmity.

The Washington-based SITE group, which monitors media material by militants across the world, released an English transcript of the speech. [ Source: Times of Israel (Read More…) ]

US braces for worst as ‘monster’ Hurricane Florence bears down

(Worthy News) – Motorists streamed inland on highways converted to one-way evacuation routes Tuesday as about 1.7 million people in three states were warned to get out of the way of Hurricane Florence, a hair-raising storm taking dead aim at the Carolinas with 140 mph (225 kph) winds and potentially ruinous rains.

Florence was expected to blow ashore late Thursday or early Friday, then slow down and wring itself out for days, unloading 1 to 2½ feet (0.3 to 0.6 meters) of rain that could cause flooding well inland and wreak environmental havoc by washing over industrial waste sites and hog farms.

Forecasters and politicians pleaded with the public to take the warnings seriously and minced no words in describing the threat. [ Source: Times of Israel (Read More…) ]

Chinese officials burn bibles, close churches, force Christian to denounce faith amid ‘escalating’ crackdown

(Worthy News) – The Chinese government is destroying crosses, burning bibles, closing churches and forcing Christian believers to sign papers renouncing their faith as the crackdown on religious congregations in Beijing and several provinces intensifies.

The suppression of religious freedoms is part of an official campaign to “Sinicize” religion by demanding loyalty to the atheist Communist party and removing any potential challenge to the party’s power in the country.

“The international community should be alarmed and outraged for this blatant violation of freedom of religion and belief,” Bob Fu of China Aid, said. [ Source: Fox News (Read More…) ]

Leaked Google employee’s email reveals effort to boost Latino vote, surprise that some voted for Trump

(Worthy News) – A Google executive’s leaked email reveals efforts to increase Latino turnout prior to the 2016 U.S. presidential election and the executive’s “surprise” at Donald Trump’s performance among Latino voters.

The 675-word email, first obtained exclusively by Fox News Channel’s “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” was written by the tech giant’s former head of multicultural marketing and details a range of efforts to increase Latino turnout, including the support of a partner organization that helped to drive voters to the polls.

“We worked very hard. Many people did. We pushed to get out the Latino vote with our features, our partners, and our voices. We kept our Googley efforts non-partisan and followed our company’s protocols for the elections strategy,” the email begins. “We emphasized our mission to give Latinos access to information so they can make an informed decision at the polls, and we feel very grateful for all the support to do this important work.”

At the end of the email, the author wrote that Latino Googler’s are “probably hurting right now” and that the election results are “tough to handle now that we know not all of us were against this.” [ Source: Fox News (Read More…) ]

Head of Iranian Nuclear Program: Consequences to Israel will be severe

(Worthy News) – Ali Akbar Salehi, the head of Iran’s nuclear program, warned Israel on Monday, “If nuclear scientists are killed in Iran, consequences will be severe.”

Salehi’s statement came in the broader context of Iranian scientists who were assassinated in a number of mysterious explosions in recent years. Iranian government officials pointed a finger at Israel, however, Israel has not taken responsibility for the killings.
Even with the collapse of the nuclear agreement between Tehran and the five remaining powers, Salehi vowed that the Iranian nuclear program would be strong.

“Trump’s decision to quit the agreement placed him on the side of the losers in history,” Salehi declared. “The agreement could pave the way for building confidence and security that was previously lost.” [ Source (Read More…) ]
