Rouhani says Israel biggest threat to world peace

(Worthy News) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Tuesday described Israel as “the most terrifying threat to the peace and stability of the region and the world.”

“Israel, which has a nuclear arsenal and is blatantly threatening others with nuclear annihilation, is the most terrifying threat to the peace and stability of the region and the world,” the Iranian president said.

“The countless crimes by Israel against the Palestinians would not have been able to take place without assistance and support from the US,” Rouhani said in his speech to the United Nations General Assembly. [ Source: Ynet News (Read More…) ]

Trump officials make clear troops won’t leave Syria anytime soon

(Worthy News) – Six months after US President Donald Trump said he wants US troops out of Syria, his top officials are hammering home what has become increasingly obvious: the US isn’t going anywhere.

Trump administration members say there can be no troop pull-out until the Islamic State is permanently defeated — a subjective metric for a stubborn insurgency where the jihadists have shown tenacity in clinging to their last pockets of terrain.

The US military has been involved in Syria since late 2014 and now has more than 2,000 troops in the country, mainly working to train and advise local Kurdish and Syrian Arab fighters. [ Source: Times of Israel (Read More…) ]

Millennials, Generation X Credited With Falling Divorce Rate

(Worthy News) – The divorce rate in the United States is falling, and demographers are crediting millennials and Generation Xers with the decline.

According to an analysis by Philip Cohen, a sociology professor at the University of Maryland, the divorce rate in America dropped by 18 percent between 2008 and 2016. That’s in part because Americans are getting married at older ages, and people married at older ages are less likely to get divorced.

Millennials, ages 22 to 37, and Gen Xers, ages 38 to 53, are choosing to settle down later in life, once their careers and finances are more established and stable. On the other hand, baby boomers, ages 54 to 72, were more likely to marry young, divorce and remarry. [ Source: US News and World Report (Read More…) ]

GOP sets up Friday committee vote on Kavanaugh

(Worthy News) – Republicans announced plans to hold a committee vote Friday morning on Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court, signaling confidence they’ll be able to speed the process after Thursday’s showdown hearing involving the woman accusing him of sexual assault as a teenager.

The Friday vote could be followed by action in the full Senate over the weekend as the GOP tries to have Judge Kavanaugh installed as the high court convenes for its new term.

The aggressive schedule comes as President Trump, in his boldest comments yet, accused Democrats of playing a “con game” with the Kavanaugh pick, and top Senate Republicans said they were tiring of delays and obstruction over allegations that, nearly two weeks after they first emerged, have yet to be corroborated. Trump defends ‘America ‘first,’ threatens to cut foreign aid budget in U.N. speech

(Worthy News) – President Trump told the United Nations on Tuesday that the U.S. is guided by patriotism instead of globalism, rejecting the authority of world bodies such as the International Criminal Court, the World Trade Organization and a U.N. migration initiative even as he praised the U.N. itself as a force for peace.

In the most in-your-face defense yet of his “America First” agenda, a defiant Mr. Trump stood before U.N. delegates who sneered openly at him and told them that the U.S. will never submit to international controls as long as he is in charge.

“America is governed by Americans,” Mr. Trump told the annual U.N. General Assembly in New York. “We reject the ideology of globalism, and we embrace the doctrine of patriotism. We will never surrender America’s sovereignty to an unaccountable, unelected global bureaucracy.” [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

Vatican, China sign landmark accord on appointing bishops

(Worthy News) – The Vatican on Saturday signed a landmark agreement giving it a long-desired say in the appointment of bishops in China, though critics labeled the deal a sellout to the Communist government.

The provisional agreement, signed in Beijing by deputy foreign ministers from both sides, was announced as Pope Francis visited Lithuania on a four-day trip to the Baltic countries.

It gives the Holy See a decisive role in the appointment of all bishops in a country whose around 12 million Catholics have been split between an underground Church swearing loyalty to the Vatican and the state-supervised Catholic Patriotic Association. [ Source: Reuters (Read More…) ]

Turkey’s Erdogan says court will decide fate of detained U.S. pastor

(Worthy News) – Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said a Turkish court, not politicians, will decide the fate of an American pastor whose detention on terrorism charges has roiled relations between Ankara and Washington.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Monday he was hopeful Turkey would release evangelical pastor Andrew Brunson this month. He was moved to house arrest in July after being detained for 21 months.

In an interview on Tuesday while he was in New York for the annual United Nations General Assembly meetings, Erdogan said any decision on Brunson would be made by the court. [ Source: Reuters (Read More…) ]

Trump eagerly awaiting meeting with Netanyahu, U.S. envoy says

(Worthy News) – U.S. Special Representative for International ‎Negotiations Jason Greenblatt on Monday refuted a report claiming that President Donald Trump was planning to rebuke Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly in New York this week.

The report, which appeared in the Israeli newspaper Maariv on Sunday, claimed that White House officials were furious with Netanyahu for allegedly acting to stall the White House’s much-awaited peace plan for Israel and the Palestinians and for increasing security coordination with Russia.

Greenblatt said the report was “completely false.”

In a statement issued Sunday, Greenblatt said, “The report in Maariv citing an unnamed source with respect to the upcoming meeting between President Trump and Prime Minister Netanyahu in New York is completely false. Nothing could be further from the truth. I would note that no one from Maariv reached out to us for comment. Had they done so, we would have provided them an accurate preview of the meeting.
