Iran video threatens missile strikes on UAE, Saudi Arabia

(Worthy News) – An Iranian media outlet close to the hard-line Revolutionary Guard published a video Tuesday threatening missile attacks on the capitals of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, further raising tensions after a weekend militant attack on an Iranian military parade.

The video, in a tweet by the semi-official Fars news agency that was later deleted, comes as Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei blamed Riyadh and Abu Dhabi for the attack in the city of Ahvaz on Saturday, which killed at least 24 people and wounded over 60. Saudi Arabia adamantly rejected the allegations.

The threat amplifies the unease felt across the Persian Gulf, as Iran’s economy reels in the wake of America’s withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal and Saudi and Emirati forces are bogged down in their war against Iran-aligned rebels in Yemen. [ Source: AP (Read More…) ]

European Parliament committee votes to freeze €15M to PA over inciting textbooks

(Worthy News) – The European Parliament’s budgetary committee voted to freeze more than 15 million euros from the Palestinian Authority if they do not remove incitement from their textbooks.

“The reserve will be released,” the bill reads, “when the Palestinian Authority has committed to reform its school curriculum and textbooks to bring them in line with UNESCO standards for peace and tolerance in school education.”

The bill, an amendment to the EU’s draft budget proposed by Budgetary Control Committee chairwoman MEP Dr. Ingeborg Grässle, is expected to go to a plenary vote on October 24. If the bill passes the plenary vote, the EU will withhold €15,440,597 until the PA changes its textbooks. [ Source: Jerusalem Post (Read More…) ]

Another round of Trump tariffs could mean ‘economic shock waves’ for China

(Worthy News) – Key consumer tech products have so far mostly escaped the heat of the ongoing trade war. But if U.S. President Donald Trump makes good on his threat to impose tariffs on the full range of Chinese imports into his country, it could hit that sector hard, experts said.

Rajiv Biswas, Asia Pacific chief economist at IHS Markit, said that products such as mobile phones and smart watches and other wearable devices could be targeted in the next round, while ANZ Greater China Chief Economist Raymond Yeung pointed to mobile phones as well as other consumer goods.

“If the US Administration imposes a third tranche of tariff measures on a further USD267 billion of Chinese exports, this will significantly ramp up the economic shock waves to Chinese exporters,” Biswas told CNBC in an email. [ Source: CNBC (Read More…) ]

US removing some missile systems from Middle East

(Worthy News) – The United States is pulling some of its anti-aircraft and missile batteries out of the Middle East, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday, citing US military officials.

The Pentagon will pull out four Patriot missile systems from Jordan, Kuwait and Bahrain next month, the report said, adding that the realignment step marks a shift of focus away from long-lasting conflicts in the Middle East and Afghanistan to tensions with China, Russia and Iran.

Two Patriot missile systems will be redeployed from Kuwait, and one each from Jordan and Bahrain, the report said. Patriots are mobile missile systems capable of shooting down missiles and planes. [ Source: Ynet News (Read More…) ]

Trump: ‘Two states works best, but one state is fine’

(Worthy News) – A two state resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict works best because it allows for people to govern themselves, US President Donald Trump told reporters at a new conference in New York.

He repeated his first ever endorsement of the two-state solution since taking office, which he had made earlier in the day, when he met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

But at the same time, Trump repeated for the reporters the line that he had said when he first entered office, that if both the Israelis and Palestinians wanted to see a one state resolution to the conflict, he would go with that. [ Source: Jerusalem Post (Read More…) ]

Report: Palestinian Textbooks Claim Entirety of Israel as Arab Land, Call Jews ‘Sinful and Liars’

(Worthy News) – Palestinian Authority textbooks encourage children to view the entirety of Israel as Arab territory, and teach them to seek the land’s liberation even at the cost of martyrdom, according to a new report by a Jerusalem-based research group.

Palestinian nationalist and Islamist ideologies that reject Israel’s basic legitimacy saturate lessons for children as young as six, with various science, math, and humanities exercises all reinforcing this overarching narrative, the Institute for Monitoring Peace and Cultural Tolerance in School Education (IMPACT-se) found.

The group studied grade 1–11 textbooks published for the 2017–18 academic year, and grade 12 textbooks that were inaugurated this August, following PA curriculum reforms first implemented in 2016. It released a preliminary review of the grades 5-11 curriculum in October. [ Source: Algemeiner (Read More…) ]

High drama in Senate as Kavanaugh-Ford hearing nears

(Worthy News) – With high drama in the making, Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh emphatically fended off new accusations of sexual misconduct ahead of a charged public Senate hearing that could determine whether Republicans can salvage his nomination and enshrine a high court conservative majority.

The Senate Judiciary Committee – 11 Republicans, all men, and 10 Democrats – was to hear from just two witnesses on Thursday: Kavanaugh, a federal appeals court judge who has long been eyed for the Supreme Court, and Christine Blasey Ford, a California psychology professor who accuses him of attempting to rape her when they were teens.

Republicans have derided her allegation as part of a smear campaign and a Democratic plot to sink Kavanaugh’s nomination. But after more allegations have emerged, some GOP senators have allowed that much is riding on Kavanaugh’s performance. Even President Donald Trump, who nominated Kavanaugh and fiercely defends him, said he was “open to changing my mind.” [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

Trump: Iran’s terrorist regime must never get nuclear weapons

(Worthy News) – U.S. President Donald Trump took aim at Iran on Tuesday as the General Debate of the 73rd Session of the U.N. General Assembly got underway.

“We cannot allow the world’s leading sponsor of terrorism to possess the planet’s most dangerous weapons. We cannot allow a regime that chants ‘Death to America’ and that threatens Israel with annihilation, to possess the means to deliver a nuclear warhead to any city on earth. Just can’t do it,” Trump told world leaders.

The American president, who was expected to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday, lashed out at the Islamic republic for sowing “chaos, death, and destruction,” vowing to counter its aggression. [ Source: Israel Hayom (Read More…) ]
