Ancient ‘Jerusalem’ inscription discovery thrills archaeologists in Israel

(Worthy News) – A unique 2,000-year-old stone inscription unearthed in Israel has thrilled archaeologists.

The find is the first full spelling of “Jerusalem” on a stone inscription, archaeologists recently confirmed. The artifact was found last winter during an excavation in the area of Jerusalem’s International Convention Center, known as Binyanei Ha’Uma.

Part of a stone column, the inscription mentions Jerusalem, written in Hebrew letters, and uses the same spelling as today, according to the Israel Antiquities Authority. [ Source: Fox News (Read More…) ]

Dozens of Christians Killed in Muslim Attack on Market in Kaduna State, Nigeria

(Worthy News) – Muslims attacked a market in Kaduna state, in north-central Nigeria, on Thursday (Oct. 18), killing dozens of Christians and burning a church building, sources said.

Area residents said a Muslim at the market in Kasuwan Magani, 36 kilometers (22 miles) south of the city of Kaduna, began yelling “Thief!” in the late afternoon in a move calculated to cause pandemonium ahead of an attack on Christians and their homes and businesses.

“A Muslim raised a false alarm about a thief in the market, which caused stampede, and then other Muslims started chanting ‘Allahu Akbar [the jihadist slogan, God is Greater],’ attacking Christians, burning houses and shops belonging to Christians in the town,” area resident Kefas Mallam told Morning Star News. Russia supports Syria, Iran ramps up support to Hezbollah

(Worthy News) – Iran reportedly delivered GPS components to Hezbollah in Lebanon that will allow the group to transform rudimentary projectiles into precision-guided missiles, thereby increasing the threat to Israel. Western intelligence services believe Tehran has shifted its strategy by increasingly shipping weaponry directly to its proxy in Beirut, with a view to evading Israeli air strikes.

The Israel Defense Forces has over the past two years conducted hundreds of attacks in Syria to prevent such arms deliveries.

Meanwhile, Russia last week upped its military support to the Assad regime with the transfer of three S-300PM-2 missile batteries whose radar and communication technologies are more sophisticated than those of the model deployed to Syria at the beginning of the month. Trump prepared to pressure Netanyahu with peace plan

(Worthy News) – US President Donald Trump and his peace team say they are prepared to apply pressure on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in their effort to jump-start peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians.

Senior administration officials have said the president’s Middle East peace plan includes several significant provisions that will pose political challenges to the Israeli premier. And now Channel 10 is reporting that Trump has told France’s president, Emmanuel Macron, that he is prepared to get “tough” with Netanyahu if necessary.

“I gave Bibi a lot – I transferred the embassy to Jerusalem,” the channel quoted Trump as telling Macron. The president also reportedly noted annual US aid to the Israelis. [ Source: Jerusalem Post (Read More…) ]

US, EU trade negotiators to meet in Washington as they struggle to find common ground

(Worthy News) – U.S. and European Union trade negotiators will meet in Washington, D.C., this week to keep the ball rolling on talks first started back in July to reduce nontariffs barriers between the two. Progress may be announced on some minor issues, but other broader agreements are unlikely until next month at least.

“Both sides are still in the realm of figuring out what is reasonable to discuss,” an official at a top U.S. trade group told the Washington Examiner. “There is a lot of political pressure on both sides to generate some near-term outcomes. What those near-term outcomes will look like is anybody’s guess.”

Relations between the U.S. and EU have been bumpy, with President Trump recently threatening 25 percent tariffs on European auto and auto parts imports and the EU also angry over steel and aluminum tariffs set up by the White House. In July, however, Trump and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker made a surprise announcement to work toward easing trade relations. The two leaders established an executive working group with the aim of eliminating all tariffs, barriers, and subsidies that currently harm businesses and consumers in the U.S. and Europe. Museum of the Bible says 5 Dead Sea Scrolls are forgeries

(Worthy News) – The Museum of the Bible announced Monday that five of its Dead Sea Scrolls fragments are forgeries, the result of a third-party scientific analysis.

The museum, which opened in November in Washington, D.C., said it removed the fragments from display and replaced them with three other fragments also undergoing scientific analysis.

“Though we had hoped the testing would render different results, this is an opportunity to educate the public on the importance of verifying the authenticity of rare biblical artifacts, the elaborate testing process undertaken and our commitment to transparency,” said Jeffrey Kloha, the museum’s chief curatorial officer. “As an educational institution entrusted with cultural heritage, the museum upholds and adheres to all museum and ethical guidelines on collection care, research and display.” [ Source: UPI (Read More…) ]

Trump promises 10 percent tax cut for middle class, catching allies off guard

(Worthy News) – President Trump called for new, major middle-class tax cuts on Monday, adding to comments made over the weekend, but backpedaled on the timing, saying they would come after midterm elections.

“We are giving a middle-income tax reduction of about 10 percent,” Trump told reporters, elaborating on his remarks from the weekend. “We’re doing it now for middle-income people. This is not for businesses. It’s for middle.”

The president added: “We will do the vote after the election.” [ Source: Washington Examiner (Read More…) ]

Gallup: More Americans than ever favor legalizing marijuana

(Worthy News) – About two-thirds of Americans favor the legalization of marijuana — the greatest majority ever recorded, Gallup said in a survey Monday.

The number has climbed dramatically since Gallup asked the question in 1969, when only 12 percent supported legalization. Support later grew to the 20-percent range, but momentum stalled until 2000, when it began a steady increase.

Approval by a majority of respondents was first seen in 2013, when Colorado and Washington state legalized recreational use. [ Source: UPI (Read More…) ]

Trump blasts caravan, says he’s cutting Central American aid

(Worthy News) – President Donald Trump declared Monday the U.S. will begin cutting aid to three Central American countries he accused of failing to stop thousands of migrants heading for the U.S. border. But across his administration there was no indication of any action in response to what he tweeted was a “National Emergy.”

For hours on Monday, White House officials were unable to provide an explanation for the president’s threats, which reflected both his apparent frustration with the migrant caravan and his determination to transform it into Republican election gains. Federal agencies said they’d received no guidance on the president’s declaration, issued as he attempts to make illegal immigration a focus of next month’s midterm elections.

If Trump should follow through with his threat to end or greatly reduce U.S. aid, that could worsen the poverty and violence that are a root cause of the migration he has been railing against, critics said. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

Christian evangelical voters boost ‘Brazil’s Trump’ in presidential bid

(Worthy News) – If the polls hold true and Brazilians elect right-wing maverick Jair Bolsonaro as president Sunday, then they will have not only turned their country’s political order upside down, but they also will have clinched the clout of Christian evangelical voters as Brazil’s most critical electoral bloc, powerful enough to elect one of their own in South America’s most populous nation.

Born-again Christians, whose numbers have grown exponentially since the 1980s and who today account for roughly 1 in 4 Brazilians, have long wielded huge political clout. They propelled leftist labor leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to power in 2003 and 13 years later helped topple his hand-picked successor, Dilma Rousseff.

Now estranged from their onetime Workers’ Party allies on the left, evangelical leaders have used their pulpits, church rolls and massive media outlets — the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God owns Brazil’s third-largest television station — to unabashedly push Mr. Bolsonaro’s upstart candidacy.
