The massive 2017 Mexican earthquake split a tectonic plate in two, and geologists are shaken

(Worthy News) – The 8.2 magnitude earthquake that brought devastation and 98 deaths to southern Mexico in September 2017 was even more extreme than initially thought — it split the tectonic plate responsible for the quake in half.

According to a new study, published in Nature Geoscience, the approximately 37-mile long Cocos plate split apart in a few seconds and released exorbitant amounts of energy.

“We find that the faulting reactivated a bend-fault fabric and ruptured to a depth well below the predicted brittle–ductile transition for the Cocos slab, including regions where temperature is expected to exceed 1,000 °C,” the study reads. “Our findings suggest that young oceanic lithosphere is brittle to greater depths than previously assumed and that rupture is facilitated by wholesale deviatoric tension in the subducted slab, possibly due to fluid infiltration.” [ Source: Fox News (Read More…) ]

Pentagon to send active-duty troops to U.S.-Mexico border

(Worthy News) – The administration will send about 800 troops to the U.S.-Mexico border ahead of the illegal immigrant caravan, a defense official confirmed Thursday, following through on President Trump’s pledge.

A majority of the new troops will be active-duty Army soldiers who specialize in support operations such as logistics and engineering. Medical staff will also be part of the deployment, with an Air Force contingent assisting in aerial evacuations.

They will join more than 2,000 National Guard troops already in the region, deployed in April as a previous caravan was testing the border. [ Source: Washington Examiner (Read More…) ]

Former FBI agents on mail bombs: Don’t rule out ‘false flag’ or nonpolitical motive

(Worthy News) – Former FBI agents have warned against jumping to conclusions about why mail bombs were sent to President Trump’s political enemies.

While speculation about the reason the packages were mailed this week runs from an effort to murder the addressees to a “false flag” campaign to damage Republicans ahead of the midterm election, experienced investigators say it is is difficult to deduce much about the bombmaker or his or her motive based on available public details.

Often, they caution, motives are not what they at first appear.

“I wouldn’t eliminate Republican leanings or Democratic leanings. The bottom line is, it is a political message that someone is sending out,” said 35-year FBI veteran James Wedick. “You have to ask, ‘What message was being sent?’” [ Source: Washington Examiner (Read More…) ]

Kremlin accuses U.S. of drone attack on Russian air base in Syria

(Worthy News) – Russia’s deputy defense minister Aleksandr Fomin accused a US airplane of manually controlling 13 drones that attempted to attack Russia’s Khmeimim air base in Syria. The surprising allegations were made at a plenary session of the Beijing Xiangshan Forum on Thursday. A Russian diplomatic source elaborated on the comments, alleging that some Syrian militants in Idlib are being used by the US to create instability in northern Syria.

According to a report at TASS, Russia’s news agency, the official said that thirteen drones have “moved according to common combat battle deployment, operated by a single crew.” He linked their movements to the presence of an American Poseidon-8 reconnaissance plane patrolling in the Mediterranean Sea. He alleged that as the drones approached the sensitive Russian air base, the Russians used electronic countermeasures against them. The drones then began to use “manual guidance,” which he said could not have been done by local Syrian “villagers,” but was in fact done by the Poseidon-8 “which has modern equipment.” The drones were destroyed, according to Fomin.

“This should be stopped as well, in order to avoid fighting with the high-technology weapons of terrorists and highly-equipped terrorists it is necessary to stop supplying them with equipment,” Fomin said. He went on to note that in January, Syrian rebel groups had first used a large number of drones “in the attack on the Russian Khmeimim air base and the Russian naval base in Tartus.” [ Source: Jerusalem Post (Read More…) ]

Trump Says New Proposal Will Save Americans Billions on Drug Prices

(Worthy News) – Less than two weeks before the midterm elections, President Donald Trump on Thursday announced a plan to lower prices for some prescription drugs, saying it would stop unfair practices that force Americans to pay much more than people in other countries for the same medications.

“We are taking aim at the global freeloading that forces American consumers to subsidize lower prices in foreign countries through higher prices in our country,” Trump said in a speech at the Department of Health and Human Services.

“Same company. Same box. Same pill. Made in the exact same location, and you would go to some countries and it would be 20 percent of the cost of what we pay,” said Trump, who predicted the plan will save Americans billions. “We’re fixing it.”

Physician-administered drugs cost Medicare $27 billion in 2016. HHS says the plan would save Medicare $17.2 billion over five years. Beneficiaries would save an estimated $3.4 billion through lower cost-sharing. [ Source (Read More…) ]

The group, many with children and even pushing toddlers in strollers, departed Mapastepec at dawn with more than 1,000 miles still to go before they reach the U.S. border.

They have advanced just 95 miles (150 kilometers) as the crow flies since thousands burst across Mexico’s southernmost border six days earlier. [ Source (Read More…) ]
