Alabama, West Virginia Voters Lay Groundwork to Outlaw Abortion

(Worthy News) – Voters in Alabama and West Virginia passed constitutional amendments Tuesday that could result in abortion being outlawed if the U.S. Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade.

Alabama voters, by a margin of 59-41, approved an amendment to the state constitution that recognizes and supports “the sanctity of unborn life and the rights of unborn children, including the right to life.” It also states that “nothing” in the state constitution “secures or protects a right to abortion or requires the funding of an abortion.”

Israel, Greece drill air forces as Syria builds up arms

(Worthy News) – Following the delivery of advanced Russian air defense systems to Syria, the Israeli Air Force held joint drills with the Hellenic Air Force in Greece over the last 12 days, as part of the growing defense cooperation between the two countries.

The IAF reportedly brought 11 F-16 fighter jets to the drill as well as one of its airborne early warning and control surveillance aircraft known as the Nachshon, according to Kathimerini, a Greek news site.

The purpose of the drills was to improve combat interoperability between the two air forces. The air forces practiced dogfights, ground bombing runs as well as flying in environments threatened by advanced surface-to-air missile systems. [ Source: Jerusalem Post (Read More…) ]

Trump administration rolls back Obamacare’s birth control rule

(Worthy News) – The Trump administration will exempt employers from providing insurance coverage for birth control if it conflicts with their religious or moral beliefs, scaling back a rule created under the Obama administration.

The rule, released Wednesday, will take effect in 60 days and will affect between 6,400 and 127,000 women, according to the Trump administration. The religious exemption applies to any type of employer, but the moral exemption doesn’t apply to publicly traded businesses or government entities.

The rules received praise from Susan B. Anthony’s List, an anti-abortion group that holds a moral objection to certain types of birth control. The group’s president, Marjorie Dannenfelser, in a statement slammed the original rules created under the Obama administration as “repeated violations of conscience” that were “deeply contrary to the core of our nation.” [ Source: Washington Examiner (Read More…) ]

Op-Ed: Pro-life movement makes small but important strides in midterm elections

(Worthy News) – Abortion was on Election Day ballot measures in three states. This is unusual and significant — it’s even more important that two of the three measures passed. It demonstrates a shift in culture that could affect political rhetoric, abortion policies, and overall, the lives of the unborn.

In Alabama, constituents voted on an amendment to the state constitution saying that the state will recognize and support the sanctity of unborn life and the rights of unborn children, and that the constitution does not protect the right to abortion or require the funding of abortion.

Trump suggests he has a secret ‘solution’ to abortion issue

(Worthy News) – President Trump indicated Wednesday that he had a compromise solution between Republicans and Democrats on abortion policy, but wouldn’t elaborate on the plan.

“I won’t be able to explain that to you, because it is an issue that is a very divisive, polarizing issue,” Trump said at a press conference following the midterm elections in which Democrats took the House of Representatives. “But there is a solution. I think I have that solution, and nobody else does. We are going to be working on that.”

Pompeo abruptly cancels meeting with North Korean diplomat over nukes

(Worthy News) – Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has postponed without explanation a planned meeting with a top North Korean official in New York Thursday meant to pump new momentum into talks over Pyongyang’s nuclear arsenal.

The State Department in a statement late Tuesday evening said only the meeting with North Korean Kim Yong Chul, Mr. Pompeo’s counterpart in the nuclear talks, would take place “when [their] respective schedules permit.”

President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un agreed to being the process of denuclearization on the divided Korean peninsula at a milestone summit in Singapore in June, but the two sides have yet to make much visible progress in the months since as they sparred over continuing U.S. sanctions and the sequence of events toward a final deal. Democrats’ House victory complicates Trump’s trade agenda

(Worthy News) – Tuesday’s Democratic re-taking of the House could complicate, but not necessarily undermine, President Trump’s trade agenda by giving the opposition party more leverage to pick apart the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement and other deals.

Losing a GOP House majority spells significant trouble Trump’s agenda on several other fronts, but the president’s broader trade policy goals are largely favored by the Democrats. It’s unlikely they would oppose him on those issues in the same way they would on an issue like immigration.

The first big test will come when the USMCA deal comes up for a vote in Congress next year. Republicans have said they don’t have the time to get a vote in before Congress adjourns this year. The main issue most Democrat lawmakers initially raised was Canada’s exclusion from the deal, which has since been resolved. Otherwise, they have been tight-lipped on the issue.
