51,856 apprehended on Mexican border in November, most of Trump’s presidency

(Worthy News) – More than 51,000 people were caught illegally entering the United States from Mexico in November, according to Department of Homeland Security data released Thursday evening, the highest number recorded since President Trump took office almost two years ago.

“The November 2018 border numbers are the predictable result of a broken immigration system — including flawed judicial rulings — that usurps the will of the American people who have repeatedly demanded secure borders,” DHS spokeswoman Katie Waldman said in a statement.

Half of those who illegally entered — 25,172 — were families. That figure is nearly four times more than the 7,000 families apprehended just one year earlier. [ Source: Washington Examiner (Read More…) ]

The U.S. Just Became a Net Oil Exporter for the First Time in 75 Years

(Worthy News) – America turned into a net oil exporter last week, breaking 75 years of continued dependence on foreign oil and marking a pivotal — even if likely brief — moment toward what U.S. President Donald Trump has branded as “energy independence.”

The shift to net exports is the dramatic result of an unprecedented boom in American oil production, with thousands of wells pumping from the Permian region of Texas and New Mexico to the Bakken in North Dakota to the Marcellus in Pennsylvania.

Putin threatens arms race if US walks away from nuclear weapons treaty

(Worthy News) – Vladimir Putin has said Moscow will develop new mid-range nuclear weapons in response to Donald Trump’s planned withdrawal from a key arms control treaty with Russia.

Mr Putin insisted that he was “against the destruction of this treaty,” but agreed with Mr Trump’s complaint that it ties the hands of the two Cold War foes while other countries can develop short- and intermediate-range nuclear missiles.

“Now our American partners apparently think the situation has changed so much that the United States also needs to have this kind of weapon. What will our response be? It’s simple. We will also do this,” Putin said. [ Source (Read More…) ]

Russia must scrap or alter missiles US says violate arms treaty

(Worthy News) – Russia must scrap its 9M729 nuclear-capable cruise missiles and launchers or modify the weapons’ range to return to compliance with a key Cold War-era arms control treaty and avert a U.S. pullout from the pact, a senior U.S. official said Thursday.

“Either you rid the system, rid the launcher or change the system where it doesn’t exceed the range” in a verifiable manner, said U.S. Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Andrea Thompson.

On Tuesday, the United States announced it was giving Russia 60 days to end what Washington charges is the missiles’ violation of the 1987 Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces Treaty, or it would begin to withdraw from the pact. [ Source: Channel News Asia (Read More…) ]

Huawei arrest threatens global markets, Trump-China trade truce

(Worthy News) – At a time of maximum tension in the U.S.-China relationship, news of the arrest last weekend of a top Chinese tech official in Canada managed to set off multiple shock waves Thursday, shining a harsh light on U.S. and allied concerns about Chinese state-backed corporate giants, massively complicating a trade war “truce” just negotiated by President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, and — for a few hours — threatening to buckle global stock markets and wipe out a big chunk of the recent Wall Street gains Mr. Trump is fond of trumpeting.

Virtually at the same moment Mr. Trump and Mr. Xi were working out their deal over dinner at the G-20 summit in Argentina Saturday, Canadian officials were arresting Meng Wanzhou, chief financial officer of Huawei Technologies Co., a crown jewel of China’s burgeoning high-tech industry, at the request of U.S. officials.

US fails to win UN condemnation of Hamas militants in Gaza

(Worthy News) – A U.S.-sponsored draft resolution that for the first time would have condemned the militant Islamic group Hamas, which controls Gaza, failed to win the required two-thirds majority in the U.N. General Assembly on Thursday.

Before the vote on the resolution, the 193-member world body had narrowly voted to require a two-thirds majority for approval as sought by Arab nations for rather than the simple majority urged by the United States.

U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley told the assembly before the vote that it could make history and unconditionally speak out against Hamas, which she called “one of the most obvious and grotesque cases of terrorism in the world.” [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]
