First bill of new US Congress, on Middle East policy, stalls in Senate

(Worthy News) – Legislation reaffirming U.S. support for allies in the Middle East, including a measure to punish Americans who boycott Israel, fell victim on Tuesday to a domestic political dispute that has resulted in a partial federal government shutdown.

The U.S. Senate voted 56 to 44, falling short of the 60 votes needed to advance the “Strengthening America’s Security in the Middle East Act.”

Most Senate Democrats have vowed to block all legislation in the Senate until it votes on a measure to end the shutdown, criticizing President Donald Trump’s fellow Republicans for backing his demand for US$5.7 billion (4.5 billion pounds) to build a barrier on the border with Mexico before reopening the government. DC Comics Turns Jesus Into a New Superhero – But There’s a Big Problem

(Worthy News) – DC Comics has a new superhero and His name is Jesus.

DC Vertigo will star Christ Himself in an upcoming comic series called Second Coming, which features Jesus returning to earth on a mission to “set the gospel straight,” the plot summary reads. The series, written by Mark Russell and illustrated by Richard Pace, will debut in March 2019.

But Second Coming is closer to blasphemous than biblical. Instead of a biblical account of Christ’s return, it depicts Jesus as a failure who disappointed God by getting crucified when he first walked the earth. He is sent back to learn how to be a real Messiah by learning from the superhero “Sun-Man.” [ Source: CBN News (Read More…) ]

Trump demands U.S. border wall, sidesteps declaring emergency

(Worthy News) – US President Donald Trump urged Congress on Tuesday to give him $5.7 billion this year to help build a wall on the border with Mexico, but stopped short of declaring a national emergency that could have led to unilaterally funding the project.

Facing Democratic opposition in Congress to a wall, Trump said in a prime-time televised speech that there was a growing security crisis at the US-Mexico border.

But after days of hinting that he might use his presidential powers to declare an emergency as a first step toward directing money for the wall without congressional approval, Trump appeared to be willing instead to continue seeking a solution to the impasse with Congress. Britain, which is due to leave the bloc in March, has yet to approve a deal to avoid an abrupt severing of ties with the EU. Although the British parliament is due to vote on a proposed settlement next week, it is unclear if it will be approved.

“The closer we get to 29 March without a deal, the more assets will be transferred and headcount hired locally or relocated,” Omar Ali, UK financial services leader at EY, said. [ Source: Reuters (Read More…) ]

Trump’s Syria withdrawal undermined by Turkey’s rebuke

(Worthy News) – The fate of Kurds whom the U.S. relied upon to battle the Islamic State continued to roil President Trump’s hope for a Syria troop pullout Tuesday, with Turkey’s leader rejecting outright Washington’s demand that it hold back on attacking Kurdish forces after American forces depart.

In a sharp rebuke to National Security Adviser John R. Bolton, who spent the day in Turkey trying to negotiate protections for the Kurds, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he “cannot make any concessions” as his military prepares for a major offensive against Kurdish forces in northeastern Syria.

Mr. Erdogan did not find time to meet with Mr. Bolton during his stay and told lawmakers that Mr. Trump’s senior security adviser made a “serious mistake” in seeking guarantees about Turkey’s policy toward the Kurds. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]
