Christian persecution expected to increase in 2019; believers facing ‘modern-day jihad’

(Worthy News) – The persecution of Christians around the world is expected to increase in 2019, with a watchdog group sharing particular concern for believers in Nigeria, China, and India.

Release International, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary, said in a press release that 215 million believers face violence and discrimination for their faith.

“In Nigeria, Fulani militants look set to continue devastating attacks against Christians in the north and central Nigeria. In the first six months of 2018 alone, they killed up to 6,000 and drove 50,000 from their homes,” the group said of the situation in the African country. [ Source: Christian Post (Read More…) ]

Senate Democrats back BDS anti-Israel movement with filibuster of Mideast partnership bill

(Worthy News) – Angry at the government shutdown and peeved over attempts to stifle anti-Israeli boycotts, Senate Democrats on Tuesday filibustered a bill that would have strengthened U.S. relationships in the Middle East while punishing the anti-Israel boycott movement.

The bill fell three votes shy of the 60 needed to overcome a filibuster, with just four Democrats joining the GOP.

Republicans made clear they aren’t giving up, with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell signaling more votes in the days ahead to try to break the filibuster.

He said the vote should have been a no-brainer, given that it included legislation Democrats themselves sponsored last year. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

Trump walks out of shutdown meeting with Democrats

(Worthy News) – President Trump walked out of shutdown negotiations with Democratic leaders Wednesday after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi refused to agree to any money for his border fence, ending the most contentious meeting yet in the 19-day-old government shutdown with no solution in sight.

The confrontation came in the highly secure Situation Room at the White House, where Mr. Trump had invited leaders of both parties to restart talks that have gone nowhere since Dec. 22. The impasse has prompted the president to threaten declaring a national emergency, an option that he said Wednesday he’s still considering.

The president walked into the Situation Room handing out candy, and asked Democratic leaders if they had any new proposals to resolve the impasse, according to those present. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

Denver may decriminalize magic mushrooms after thousands sign measure

(Worthy News) – Psychedelic mushrooms might be decriminalized in Denver, Colorado this May after a group gathered nearly double the number of signatures needed for such a measure to appear on the ballot.

Organizers with Decriminalize Denver, the group behind the initiative, submitted more than 8,000 signatures to the Denver Elections Division in favor of the push, Fox affiliate KDVR reported. Only 4,726 valid signatures are required for the measure to be placed on the ballot.

The measure would make the personal use and possession of psilocybin mushrooms by those 21 years of age or older Denver’s “lowest law-enforcement priority, ” according to the measure’s language. It would also “prohibit the city from spending resources to impose criminal penalties” against those who use and possess it. [ Source: Fox News (Read More…) ]

If May loses Brexit vote, Corbyn to call for UK elections

(Worthy News) – Britain’s main opposition Labor Party will demand a general election if Prime Minister Theresa May loses a vote in parliament over her Brexit plans next week, its leader Jeremy Corbyn will say on Thursday.

Lawmakers are due to vote next Tuesday on May’s plans and are widely expected to defeat them after she failed to win over the Northern Irish party that props up her minority government.

“If the government cannot pass its most important legislation, then there must be a general election at the earliest opportunity,” Labor leader Jeremy Corbyn will say, according to the text of a speech he will deliver in Wakefield, northern England, extracts of which were released by Labor. Supermoon Lunar Eclipse To Become The First Pan-American Total Eclipse In 19 Years

(Worthy News) – When the Sun, Earth, and Moon line up just properly, the shadow cast by our planet can fall onto the Moon. If the alignment is perfect, the result will be a total lunar eclipse, where the entirety of the Moon enters the darkest part of Earth’s shadow. During this time, anyplace on Earth’s surface that experiences night will be treated to the spectacular show of a completely red, dim Moon.

Total lunar eclipses are relatively common; we get about one per year, on average. But something special is happening on the night of January 20th/21st: the entirety of the North and South American continents will get to experience the full show of the eclipse. This includes the penumbral, partial, and total stages from everywhere in the Americas. It’s the first time this will happen since the year 2000, and the last time it will occur until 2058. Ex-national security advisor to ‘Post’: Israel needs to review China deals

(Worthy News) – In news stories that were scarcely noted last year, Prof. Avi Shimhon, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s top economic advisor, and Meir Ben Shabbat, Israel’s National Security Advisor, were reportedly instructed to develop a mechanism to assess the threat of strategic investment by external actors in Israel’s critical infrastructure. Their task was described as a run-of-the-mill bureaucratic one. But it was clear that Israel’s leadership was reassessing foreign strategic investment in the state, including Chinese plans for the reconstruction and operation of the state’s largest seaport in Haifa.

This move was long overdue. The decision to work with China on the Haifa port has already rankled US decision makers and has reportedly alarmed the Pentagon. Indeed, there are rumors that the US Navy may no longer dock its vessels in Haifa if the China deal goes through.

China is one of the Pentagon’s top concerns these days. Beijing has global ambitions. In addition to its increasing activity on the South China Sea, it has launched new economic and political initiatives like One Belt One Road, which is designed to grant the Chinese a foothold in countries stretching from central Asia all the way to the Levant. Furthermore, Israel’s critical infrastructure programs and facilities have become important to China in recent years. [ Source: Jerusalem Post (Read More…) ]
