Israeli strike in Syria targeted Hezbollah, Iranian commanders

(Worthy News) – The Israeli strike on Iranian warehouses in Damascus on Friday was timed to target a meeting of Hezbollah and Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps commanders who were meeting with Syrian military leaders, the Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Jadira reported Monday.

Al-Jadira quoted sources in the Revolutionary Guards who said the Syrian, Iranian, and Hezbollah commanders had convened to discuss a joint Russian-Turkish plan to attack the al-Qaida-affiliated jihadist Nusra Front group in Idlib in northwestern Syria.

The sources told the Kuwaiti paper that the strike came moments after the meeting adjourned and badly wounded two Revolutionary Guard commanders and a number of Hezbollah and Syrian military personnel. [ Source: Israel Hayom (Read More…) ]

Abbas asks UN for protective force against Israel prior to chairing G77

(Worthy News) – The United Nations must provide the Palestinians with an international protection force, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said in New York on Monday, a day before taking over the chairmanship of the Group of 77, the largest bloc of United Nation member states.

Abbas held talks with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday and briefed him on the latest developments surrounding the Palestinian issue and “dangerous Israeli violations” against Palestinians, especially in Jerusalem, the PA’s official Wafa news agency reported.

During the meeting, Abbas stressed the need to implement the UN General Assembly and Security Council’s resolutions, “particularly the secretary-general’s report regarding providing international protection for the Palestinians, as well as his reports concerning the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2334, specifically with regards to the illegal Israeli practices and the settlements.” [ Source: Jerusalem Post (Read More…) ]

Trump threatens to ‘devastate Turkey economically’ if it attacks Kurds in Syria

(Worthy News) – President Donald Trump threatened Turkey with devastating sanctions if America’s NATO ally attacked Kurds following a U.S. troop withdrawal from Syria.

“Starting the long overdue pullout from Syria while hitting the little remaining ISIS territorial caliphate hard, and from many directions,” Trump said on Twitter late Sunday. “Will attack again from existing nearby base if it reforms. Will devastate Turkey economically if they hit Kurds. Create 20 mile safe zone….”

“…Likewise, do not want the Kurds to provoke Turkey,” the president added in another tweet. [ Source: CNBC (Read More…) ]

May Faces Worst Government Defeat in 95 Years in Key Brexit Vote

(Worthy News) – Prime Minister Theresa May is set to see her Brexit deal rejected in the biggest Parliamentary defeat for a British government in 95 years after her last minute pleas for support appeared to fall on deaf ears. The battle now is over not whether May loses, but how badly.

At least 70 of her Conservative Party, as well as sometime allies in the Democratic Unionist Party, are publicly pledged to join opposition Members of Parliament in voting against her agreement Tuesday. That would translate into a defeat by a margin of 150 or more, the largest in over a century. Even if some abstain, a defeat by more than 100 would be the worst since 1924. Second U.S. judge blocks Trump administration birth control rules

(Worthy News) – A federal judge in Pennsylvania on Monday blocked the Trump administration from enforcing new rules allowing employers to obtain exemptions from an Obamacare requirement that they provide health insurance that covers women’s birth control.

U.S. District Judge Wendy Beetlestone in Philadelphia issued a nationwide injunction preventing the rules from taking effect, a day after another judge issued a more limited ruling blocking their enforcement in 13 states and the District of Columbia.

The rules would let businesses or nonprofits lodge religious or moral objections to obtain exemptions from the Obamacare mandate that employers provide contraceptive coverage in health insurance with no copayment. [ Source: Reuters (Read More…) ]

Trump’s full court press fails to sway voters on border wall, earns him credit for shutdown

(Worthy News) – President Trump’s prime-time plea to Americans to support his plans for a border wall fell flat, and the public increasingly blames him for the government shutdown.

Not only did last week’s Oval Office address fail to boost support for Mr. Trump’s wall — polling numbers are virtually unchanged compared to a month ago — but Americans aren’t even giving the president the benefit of the doubt anymore.

One poll even found more people believed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer, who delivered a televised rebuttal to the president, than believed Mr. Trump. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

AG nominee Bill Barr says Robert Mueller will be allowed to complete his probe

(Worthy News) – Attorney General nominee William P. Barr will promise senators Tuesday that if he is confirmed, he will ll allow special counsel Robert Mueller to finish his probe, now in its 20th month, into Russian election meddling.

In remarks released Monday that Mr. Barr is expected to deliver to the Senate Judiciary Committee, the prospective attorney general will also say Mr. Mueller is handling the probe properly, sounding a dissonant note with President Trump, who has repeatedly called the investigation a politically motivated witch hunt.

The testimony seemed designed to try to earn support from wary Democrats who view the Justice Department almost entirely through the lens of the Russia probe. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

Dems pressure GOP with two new bills to end the shutdown

(Worthy News) – House Democrats on Monday stepped up the pressure on Republicans to vote for legislation that at least temporarily funds partially closed government agencies, even if it excludes President Trump’s demand for wall funding.

House Appropriations Committee Chairman Nita Lowey, D-N.Y., introduced two bills that would temporarily fund nine departments and dozens of government agencies for which funding has lapsed since Dec. 22.

One of the measures, which will get a vote on Tuesday, would keep those government operations funded until Feb. 1. A second version, which the House will vote on Friday, would maintain funding through Feb. 28. [ Source: Washington Examiner (Read More…) ]

US Senate to take up Russia sanctions measure Tuesday

(Worthy News) – The U.S. Senate will begin voting on Tuesday on a resolution criticizing the Trump administration’s decision to ease sanctions on companies linked to Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska, a measure that is unlikely to pass given the Republican majority in the chamber.

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer sent a letter to Senate Republicans and Democrats on Monday urging them to support the resolution of disapproval.

The U.S. Treasury announced on Dec. 20 that it would lift sanctions imposed in April on the core businesses of Deripaska, including aluminium giant Rusal, its parent En+ and power firm EuroSibEnergo, watering down the toughest penalties imposed on Russian entities since Moscow’s 2014 annexation of Crimea.
