2020 Dems warm to expanding Supreme Court, Diminishing Conservative Majority

(Worthy News) – After watching Mitch McConnell transform the judiciary over the past four years, liberals are demanding a bold response. And Democrats are listening.

Sens. Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren and Kirsten Gillibrand told POLITICO they would not rule out expanding the Supreme Court if elected president, showcasing a new level of interest in the Democratic field on an issue that has until recently remained on the fringes of debate.

The surprising openness from White House hopefuls along with other prominent Senate Democrats to making sweeping changes — from adding seats to the high court to imposing term limits on judges and more — comes as the party is eager to chip away at the GOP’s growing advantage in the courts. DHS on track to nab 100,000 illegals at border this month

(Worthy News) – The government is on track to catch nearly 100,000 immigrants crossing the border illegally this month, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said Monday, renewing the administration’s plea for Congress to do something.

That number would be the highest in more than a decade, and it’s more troubling than the worst years because now the immigrants are increasingly children and families who, despite being here illegally, are almost impossible to deport.

“The situation at our Southern border has gone from a crisis, to a national emergency, to a near systemwide meltdown,” Ms. Nielsen said in delivering an update on the state of her department 16 years after it was established. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

Pentagon lays out $6.8 billion of projects to cut for Trump border wall

(Worthy News) – The Pentagon has a list of $6.8 billion worth of construction projects it could choose to take money from in order to build President Trump’s border wall, according to a list belatedly provided to Congress on Monday.

But officials have yet to even decide how much Defense Department money they’ll use toward the wall, and so they haven’t decided which projects on the target list would actually be affected.

The Pentagon also said Congress can make sure none of the projects suffer by passing an increase in military construction money for 2020, allowing the government to go back and replenish the accounts Mr. Trump wants to drain for his border wall. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

Flash Floods and Earthquake in Indonesia Kill at Least 79 People, Officials Say

(Worthy News) – The number of people killed after torrential downpours triggered flash floods and mudslides that tore through mountainside villages in Indonesia’s easternmost province has climbed to 79, with dozens of others missing, officials said Monday.

On Sunday, the disaster-prone country was hit by an earthquake, triggering a landslide that hit a popular waterfall on the tourist island of Lombok, killing at least three people and damaging hundreds of homes.

The worst-hit area from the flooding was Sentani subdistrict, where tons of mud, rocks and trees from a landslide on a mountain early Sunday rolled down to a river that burst its banks, sweeping away residents, National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho told a news conference in the capital, Jakarta. EU leaders could avoid final call on Brexit delay this week

(Worthy News) – European Union leaders could hold off making any final decision on any Brexit delay when they meet in Brussels later this week, senior diplomats in the bloc said, depending on what exactly British Prime Minister Theresa May asks them for.

The senior national diplomats in Brussels spoke on Monday afternoon after the UK’s speaker of parliament seemed to have dashed May’s hopes for a third House of Commons vote – which had initially been expected as soon as this week – to approve her stalled divorce deal with the bloc.

Sources in the EU’s political hub Brussels said earlier on Monday that Britain could ask for a Brexit delay even after the summit, suggesting that the decisive moment for Brexit might still be some days ahead. [ Source: Reuters (Read More…) ]

Israel was a ‘hair’s breadth’ from war with Hezbollah, ex-IDF chief says

(Worthy News) – Recently retired IDF chief of staff Gadi Eisenkot said Monday that Israel came close to all-out conflict with Hezbollah during his tenure.

Speaking at a security conference in Netanya, Eisenkot said tensions with the Iran-backed terror group that controls much of Lebanon almost erupted into a hot war on more than one occasion.

“There were not a few instances and days where the distance between those events and escalation to the point of war or battle was a hair’s breadth,” Eisenkot was quoted saying by Hebrew-language media. [ Source (Read More…) ]

Pentagon Wants to Test A Space-Based Weapon in 2023

(Worthy News) – Defense officials want to test a neutral particle-beam in orbit in fiscal 2023 as part of a ramped-up effort to explore various types of space-based weaponry. They’ve asked for $304 million in the 2020 budget to develop such beams, more powerful lasers, and other new tech for next-generation missile defense. Such weapons are needed, they say, to counter new missiles from China, Russia, North Korea and Iran. But just figuring out what might work is a difficult technical challenge.

So the Pentagon is undertaking two studies. The first is a $15 million exploration of whether satellites outfitted with lasers might be able to disable enemy missiles coming off the launch pad. Defense officials have said previously that these lasers would need to be in the megawatt class. They expect to finish the study within six months. [ Source: Defense One (Read More…) ]
