Millions without water as Venezuela crisis deepens

(Worthy News) – Millions of Venezuelans were left without running water Monday amid a series of massive blackouts, forcing President Nicolas Maduro to announce electricity rationing and school closures as the government struggles to cope with a deepening economic crisis.

Mr Maduro announced 30 days of power rationing on Sunday, after his government said it was shortening the work day and keeping schools closed due to blackouts.

The measures are a stark admission by the government – which blamed repeated power outages in March on sabotage – that there is not enough electricity to go around, and that the power crisis is here to stay. [ Source: Business Times (Read More…) ]

Attacks on Indian Christians Up in 2019 As Election Season Approaches

by Jordan Hilger, Worthy News Correspondent

(Worthy News) – Four Christian home meetings were disrupted in India’s Tamil Nadu state in the last two months, as persecution by Hindu nationalists intensifies in the run-up to national elections.

Pastor Raju, leader of a home group in Tiruchirappalli District, sought help from local police on February 19th after a group of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stalwarts broke in and forced his meeting to scatter.

“We never faced such opposition in the past 15 years,” he observed in light of the recent escalation in attacks on Christian minorities, which saw 28 more incidents of violence against Christians in January and February of 2019 than in the first two months of last year.

Release International attributes the uptick to upcoming Indian elections, which begin on April 11th, in which Narendra Modi’s religious nationalist agenda faces a potential existential threat in contender Rahul Gandhi.

“The last five years under the Modi regime have seen a sharp rise in mob attacks on minorities, both Christian and Muslim, across India,” noted Indian human rights leader Shabnam Hashmi in regard to the change of political climate that has occurred under India’s Prime Minister.

“Nothing short of a defeat of Modi’s regime in the upcoming elections can change the situation,” she said.

India has jumped 21 spaces on Open Doors USA’s World Watch List since Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party was elected to power in 2014.

Britain, France, Germany seek UN report on Iran missile development

(Worthy News) – Britain, France, and Germany accused Iran of developing missile technology in contravention of a UN resolution, and called for a full UN report on recent activities, according to a letter released Tuesday.

The European trio cited Iran’s launch of a space vehicle and the unveiling of two new ballistic missiles in February as forming “part of trend of increased activity inconsistent” with the resolution, according to the letter sent to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

UN Security Council Resolution 2231 — adopted just after the 2015 nuclear deal — calls on Iran, but does not require of it, “not to undertake any activity related to ballistic missiles designed to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons.” [ Source: Times of Israel (Read More…) ]

Poll shows Likud overtake Blue and White; Labor surge

(Worthy News) – A television poll aired Tuesday projected Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud as the largest party in Knesset elections on April 9, with some support for Benny Gantz’s Blue and White flowing to a resurgent Labor Party.

Blue and White has consistently polled ahead of Likud since it was formed in February through a merger of Gantz’s Israel Resilience and Yair Lapid’s centrist Yesh Atid party, but has recently seen its lead over Likud slip in the polls, amid a series of negative campaigns.

According to Channel 13 news, Likud would receive 29 seats, just beating out Blue and White with 28. [ Source: Times of Israel (Read More…) ]

House to advance bill busting federal spending caps

(Worthy News) – House lawmakers are poised to advance a two-year break from federal spending caps imposed by a 2011 law that sought to reduce the debt.

House Budget Committee Chairman John Yarmuth, D-Ky., introduced the measure Tuesday and said his panel will vote to advance it Wednesday. A House vote could come next week, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., said.

The measure would lift the domestic spending limit by 5.7 percent, to $631 billion in fiscal 2020 and to $646 billion in fiscal 2021. The measure would raise defense spending by 2.6 percent over the current cap, to $664 billion in 2020. Defense spending would be limited to $680 billion in fiscal 2021. EU Official Says No-Deal Brexit Becoming More Likely

(Worthy News) – European Union chief negotiator Michel Barnier said Tuesday that Britain is getting closer and closer to having its exit from the EU go forward with no deal in place on the terms of its withdrawal.

Speaking in Brussels, Barnier said there is still hope to avoid a so-called no-deal Brexit. But he indicated Britain has limited options, with the only “orderly manner” being a scenario where the British parliament accepts the deal Prime Minister Theresa May’s negotiators agreed to after two years of talks with the EU.

To date, British lawmakers have rejected that agreement three times. May is expected to try to bring it back for a fourth vote. [ Source: VOA News (Read More…) ]

Trump reshapes long-liberal 9th Circuit, as Republican-appointed judges gain seats on court

(Worthy News) – For the first time in more than three decades, Republican-appointed judges will soon occupy nearly half the seats on the left-leaning 9th Circuit Court of Appeals — dealing a setback to progressive legal advocates who have long seen the court as a safe bet for favorable rulings.

The radical transformation of the San Francisco-based court is largely the result of President Trump’s aggressive push to nominate conservative judges and bypass traditional consultations with Senate Democrats — a practice that has led to repeated howls of protest from California’s two Democratic senators, Kamala Harris and Judiciary Committee ranking member Dianne Feinstein. The 9th Circuit has a sprawling purview over cases arising in nine western states, including California, Hawaii, and Oregon.

Once Trump’s latest picks to the 9th Circuit, including Ken Lee and Dan Collins, are confirmed as expected and remaining vacancies are filled, 13 of the 29 active seats on the key appellate court will be filled with judges picked by Republican presidents. At this time last year, 16 judges on the 9th Circuit were appointed by Democrats, with only six chosen by Republicans. [ Source: Fox News (Read More…) ]

McConnell to Trump: We’re not repealing and replacing ObamaCare

(Worthy News) – Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) told President Trump in a conversation Monday that the Senate will not be moving comprehensive health care legislation before the 2020 election, despite the president asking Senate Republicans to do that in a meeting last week.

McConnell said he made clear to the president that Senate Republicans will work on bills to keep down the cost of health care, but that they will not work on a comprehensive package to replace the Affordable Care Act, which the Trump administration is trying to strike down in court.

“We had a good conversation yesterday afternoon and I pointed out to him the Senate Republicans’ view on dealing with comprehensive health care reform with a Democratic House of Representatives,” McConnell told reporters Tuesday, describing his conversation with Trump.
