Deadly germs, Lost cures: A Mysterious Infection, Spanning the Globe in a Climate of Secrecy

(Worthy News) – Last May, an elderly man was admitted to the Brooklyn branch of Mount Sinai Hospital for abdominal surgery. A blood test revealed that he was infected with a newly discovered germ as deadly as it was mysterious.

Doctors swiftly isolated him in the intensive care unit. The germ, a fungus called Candida auris, preys on people with weakened immune systems, and it is quietly spreading across the globe.

C. auris is so tenacious, in part, because it is impervious to major antifungal medications, making it a new example of one of the world’s most intractable health threats: the rise of drug-resistant infections.

For decades, public health experts have warned that the overuse of antibiotics was reducing the effectiveness of drugs that have lengthened life spans by curing bacterial infections once commonly fatal. But lately, there has been an explosion of resistant fungi as well, adding a new and frightening dimension to a phenomenon that is undermining a pillar of modern medicine. EU to agree further Brexit delay but could kick UK out on June 1

(Worthy News) – The European Union will grant Britain another delay to Brexit on certain conditions, including that it holds European Parliament elections, according to a draft statement by the bloc’s national leaders, who are due to decide on the matter on Wednesday.

The EU would cut Britain off on June 1 if it failed to honour that condition – but so far the draft conclusions have left the end-date of the postponement blank before national diplomats discuss them later in the evening in Brussels.

According to the draft seen by Reuters, the EU will agree “an extension to allow for the ratification of the Withdrawal Agreement”. It could be cut short if both the EU and Britain ratify the Brexit deal before it runs its course. [ Source: Reuters (Read More…) ]

Mueller report will be released within a week: U.S. attorney general

(Worthy News) – U.S. Attorney General William Barr told lawmakers on Tuesday that he intends to release ‘within a week’ a redacted version of the long-awaited report on Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election from Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

During a congressional hearing, Barr was repeatedly challenged by Democrats who raised suspicions that he may have misrepresented Mueller’s report to paint the Republican president in a better light.

Barr, an appointee of Trump who last month announced what he said were the main findings of the report, said he would be as open as possible about redactions of sensitive information when he hands over the full document. [ Source: Reuters (Read More…) ]

Trump dissenters had hoped that Mueller would find evidence of collusion between Trump’s campaign and Russian authorities, but Mueller’s findings concluded there was no evidence of it. [ Source: Washington Examiner (Read More…) ]

House Dems cancel vote on budget plan amid internal revolt

(Worthy News) – House Democratic leaders on Tuesday abandoned plans to vote on a key budget measure this week in the face of sharp opposition from both progressives and moderates.

The revolt over legislation to set federal spending is a setback for Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her deputies on the eve of their 100 day mark in the majority. And it darkens the outlook for how Washington will resolve a slew of ugly funding battles later this year.

Democrats decided to punt a vote on the budget bill after both corners of their caucus — the Congressional Progressive Caucus and the moderate Blue Dog Coalition — warned they had enough muscle to tank the bill on the floor if they didn’t get their way. [ Source: Politico (Read More…) ]

Europe slams ‘exaggerated’ US tariff threat and prepares to retaliate

(Worthy News) – The EU has hit back at new U.S. proposals to target European goods with tariffs, following a World Trade Organization (WTO) ruling over subsidies for Airbus.

Trade tensions between the EU and U.S. flared Monday after the U.S. said it’s considering $11 billion worth of retaliatory tariffs on a range of goods in response to illegal subsidies the EU granted to the aerospace firm.

The WTO ruled last year that these allowances had caused “adverse effects” to the U.S., with the decision coming after a long-running litigation battle between the Washington and Brussels over their respective aviation giants. [ Source: CNBC (Read More…) ]

IMF forecast: Global growth will weaken this year to 3.3%

(Worthy News) – The International Monetary Fund on Tuesday downgraded its outlook for growth in the United States, Europe, Japan, and the overall global economy and pointed to heightened trade tensions as a key reason.

The IMF expects the world economy to grow 3.3% this year, down from 3.6% in 2018. That would match 2016 for the weakest year since 2009. In its previous forecast in January, the IMF had predicted that international growth would reach 3.5% this year.

For the United States, IMF economists downgraded their growth forecast for this year to 2.3% from 2.9% in 2018. [ Source: Fox News (Read More…) ]
