Trump Set to Host Moon for North Korea Talks

(Worthy News) – U.S. President Donald Trump is hosting South Korean President Moon Jae-in for talks Thursday at the White House focused on the goal of both nations to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula.

Trump has held two summits with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, with the most recent one in February ending early with no agreement as the North Koreans demanded sanctions relief and the U.S. delegation called for North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons.

Moon has been a proponent of incremental measures toward denuclearization with the United States using the relaxation of some sanctions as a way to entice North Korea to negotiate and begin to take steps of its own. [ Source: VOA News (Read More…) ]

U.S. charges Assange after London arrest ends seven years in Ecuador embassy

(Worthy News) – British police dragged WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange out of Ecuador’s embassy on Thursday after his seven-year asylum was revoked, paving the way for his extradition to the United States for one of the biggest ever leaks of classified information.

Hours after the frail-looking Assange, with white hair and a long beard, was carried head-first by at least seven men out of the London embassy and into a waiting police van, U.S. officials announced he had been charged with a single count of conspiracy to commit computer intrusion.

As he was being hauled out of the embassy in a dramatic scene shortly after 0900 GMT after Ecuador terminated his asylum, the Australian-born Assange was heard shouting, “This is unlawful, I’m not leaving.” [ Source: Reuters (Read More…) ]

Blizzard clobbers Plains and Midwest after blanketing the U.S. Rockies

(Worthy News) – A powerful blizzard slammed the U.S. Plains and Midwest on Thursday with heavy snow and fierce winds that caused power outages and closed highways while raising fears of more flooding in the Midwest after a deluge last month.

The system was dumping more than a foot (0.3 m) of heavy snow and winds were gusting up to 65 miles (105 km) per hour from northeast Colorado north to northern Wisconsin, the National Weather Service said in multiple advisories.

Whiteout conditions on roadways were making “travel extremely dangerous,” according to the weather service. Blizzard and winter storm warnings would remain in effect across the region through Friday morning, it said. [ Source: Reuters (Read More…) ]

Kahlon negotiating return to Likud fold, would stay on as finance minister

(Worthy News) – Following a dismal showing in the polls, Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon is negotiating a return to the Likud party.

The negotiations are at an advanced stage, with Kahlon’s Kulanu party to be united with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud and Kahlon retaining his position as finance minister, Ynet news reported.

Kahlon is expected to receive an additional cabinet portfolio as part of the agreement, that would see Likud rise to 39 seats in the 120-seat Knesset. This would be the largest number of seats for Likud since the 1988 elections, when it won 40. [ Source: Times of Israel (Read More…) ]

Baby born using controversial 3-parent IVF technique in medical first, doctors report

(Worthy News) – Doctors claim they have made medical history after a healthy baby boy was born via a controversial IVF technique that uses the genetic information of three parents. Both the baby, who was born on Tuesday, and his unnamed 32-year-old mother, are reported to be in good health, according to the Spanish and Greek doctors who oversaw their care.

The boy was conceived using a procedure known as Maternal Spindle Transfer (MST). MST is a type of in vitro fertilization in which harmful mitochondria found in the mother’s egg is removed and replaced by the female donor’s. The procedure still allows the preservation of genetic material from the woman with the desire to reproduce, ultimately allowing 99 percent of the DNA to be from the parents raising the child. For Netanyahu, an unprecedented election haul bodes well for political survival

(Worthy News) – The 2019 elections are over. Officials may yet be recounting votes, but nothing will change the fact that Benjamin Netanyahu has well and truly beaten the generals, the pollsters and the sourpusses. With 1,138,772 votes cast for Likud, Netanyahu’s party is the first in Israel’s history to cross the one-million-ballot threshold.

But the prime minister’s real challenges begin now, just as all eyes are turned toward Washington, in anticipation of President Donald Trump’s peace plan.

Will the reelected prime minister be able to hold onto his seat even if he is indicted for bribery, fraud and breach of trust? Will his renewed right-wing coalition be able to block the peace process, or will the Washington plan threaten his coalition stability? And will Netanyahu succeed in becoming a prime minister for all of Israel’s citizens — as he promised in his rather conciliatory winning speech — when he is so dependent on a coalition composed of radical right-wing and ultra-religious parties? Iran Restarts Advanced Nuclear Work

(Worthy News) – Iranian leaders have authorized and begun spinning a set of advanced nuclear centrifuges to mark the country’s Iran National Nuclear Day, which leaders said is in honor “of all the jihadi efforts of our country’s nuclear industrialists.”

In unveiling a set of IR-6 nuclear centrifuges, which are the key component in enriching uranium to amounts that could be used as fuel for a weapon, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani claimed that Tehran has “acquired missiles and weapons you could not have imagined.”

“Today, and throughout the past year, we have launched 114 new technologies via the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran,” Rouhani was quoted as saying in remarks translated by the Middle East Media Research Institute, or MEMRI. “This is the message to the world: You have not succeeded and you will not succeed in preventing the progress and development of the Iranian people and [their] scientists. If yesterday you feared our IR-1 centrifuges—well, here you go! [ Source: Washington Free Beacon (Read More…) ]
