US Postal Service fears running out of cash by 2024 amid a ‘death spiral’

(Worthy News) – The U.S. Postal Service, contending with dwindling revenue even as it delivers mail to 1 million new addresses every year, will run out of cash in the next five years unless Congress eliminates flaws that lawmakers built into its business model, the postmaster general warned Tuesday.

Chief among the obstacles is a requirement imposed in 2006 that the organization pay in advance for retiree health benefits, rather than covering them as they come due, the practice of most government agencies and private companies.

That alone costs the service $7.1 billion a year and has contributed to 11 years of losses, including one of $3.9 billion in 2018. The organization has stayed afloat largely by defaulting on $48 billion in mandated payments over the past several years, Megan Brennan said during a hearing called by the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, and its operations are further complicated by inflation-linked caps on price increases for key products. Barr blows off House Judiciary hearing in fight over format of questioning

(Worthy News) – Attorney General William Barr is backing out of a hearing before the House Judiciary Committee on Thursday, escalating a fight with Democrats over the format of questioning.

“Unfortunately, even after the Attorney General volunteered to testify, Chairman Nadler placed conditions on the House Judiciary Committee hearing that are unprecedented and unnecessary,” Kerri Kupec, a representative for the Justice Department, said in a statement to the Washington Examiner. “Congress and the Executive branch are co-equal branches of government, and each have a constitutional obligation to respect and accommodate one another’s legitimate interests. Chairman Nadler’s insistence on having staff question the Attorney General, a Senate-confirmed Cabinet member, is inappropriate.”

Chairman Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., told reporters Wednesday evening that the Justice Department notified the panel that Barr will not testify about the federal Russia investigation. “Although we have worked around the clock to address his concerns, Attorney General Barr informed us he will not attend tomorrow’s hearing,” he said. NYT publishes another antisemitic cartoon, days after global outrage

(Worthy News) – Following a weekend of outrage over an antisemitic cartoon, the New York Times published another offensive cartoon with antisemitic tropes, according to ADL chief Jonathan Greenblatt in a tweet.

The cartoon depicts Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with dark spectacles in place of his eyes, holding a tablet marked with a Star of David and taking a selfie, likely referencing that Netanyahu views himself as a modern-day Moses.

Calling it “insensitive, inappropriate and offensive,” Greenblatt said that once again the NYT “needs to educate its staff about antisemitism.” [ Source: Jerusalem Post (Read More…) ]
