Trump overhauls crucial U.S. appeals courts at record pace: ‘It’s a generational change’

(Worthy News) – The Senate confirmed Michael Park to be a judge on the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Thursday, making him the 39th circuit court judge to be confirmed under President Trump in a process on a record pace that is steadily reshaping the bench.

Judge Park joins Joseph Bianco, confirmed earlier this week, on that bench, bringing the number of Republican-appointed active judges on the chief 2nd Circuit panel to six.

With two more vacancies by this summer as judges take senior status, Mr. Trump will soon have a chance to flip control of the circuit, which currently has seven Democratic appointees. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

Blue states move to bump Trump off 2020 ballot over tax returns

(Worthy News) – Democrats have redoubled their efforts to force President Trump to release his federal tax returns by threatening to keep him off the 2020 ballot in deep-blue states, to which he might say: So what?

Seventeen states have seen bills introduced this year that would require presidential candidates to turn over their tax returns as a condition for ballot access, and such measures have cleared one legislative chamber in at least four states.

For the Trump campaign, however, there may be worse fates than being left off the ballot in liberal enclaves like California, Hawaii and Illinois, where the mandatory tax-return bills are making headway, given that no Republican presidential contender is likely to prevail there. Change Your Faith, or Else: Nancy Pelosi’s ‘Equality Act’ Will Make Religious Freedom Less Equal

(Worthy News) – Just days before the midterm elections, now House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) vowed from Harvard University to make passing the ‘Equality Act’ one of her top legislative priorities — and she wasn’t bluffing.

The House Judiciary Committee voted last week to advance the deceptively named “Equality Act,” which, according to the conservative legal nonprofit Alliance Defending Freedom, “gives people of faith an ultimatum: Change your faith-based practices or face government punishment.”

If the proposal is approved — which isn’t out of the question, given it has 240 co-sponsors — the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the Fair Housing Act would both be amended to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity in employment, housing, public accommodations, public education, federal funding and the jury system. US-China trade talks to continue into Friday

(Worthy News) – Trade talks between the U.S. and China are expected to continue on into Friday despite the Trump administration’s plans to hike tariffs on virtually all Chinese goods to 25% at midnight Thursday. The extension indicates the sides still think they can reach an agreement, even after missing Thursday’s deadline.

“I just called someone who is close to the negotiations in Washington and was told the two sides just finished Thursday’s talks. They will have another negotiation Friday morning US time. In other words, negotiations will extend beyond the time when the US starts to raise tariffs,” Hu Xijin, the editor-in-chief of Chinese state-run newspaper the Global Times, tweeted in English late Thursday.

Chinese Vice Premier Liu He, Beijing’s top negotiator, arrived in Washington, D.C., Thursday afternoon just hours ahead of the deadline. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

ICE: 160,000 immigrant family members caught at border and released on street since December

(Worthy News) – At least 160,000 people who entered the United States illegally in family groups have been released in southern border towns since December because the federal government is unable to hold the tens of thousands entering the country each month, according to the Trump administration.

“Due to such challenges, since mid-December 2018, ICE [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] has released over 160,000 family unit members into the United States with instructions to report to a local ERO [Enforcement and Removal Operations] field office and immigration court,” according to a prepared statement by Nathalie R. Asher, acting executive associate director of ICE ERO, planned to give the Senate Judiciary Committee Wednesday afternoon.

The agency has just 2,500 beds for families in its custody and 60,000 immigrant families being taken into custody monthly. An unspecified number of those families are being released by Border Patrol and not transferred to ICE because CBP does not have room to take in new detainees. Colo. House passes LGBT-inclusive sex ed bill blocking schools from teaching abstinence only

(Worthy News) – The Colorado House has passed a controversial bill requiring schools that offer sex education classes to either teach gay and lesbian issues and not focus on abstinence-only programs — or to provide no instruction on sexuality at all.

The “Comprehensive Human Sexuality Education bill,” or HB1032, passed on a 39-23 vote on Tuesday, with one Democrat, Rep. Don Valdez of La Jara, voting “no” with the Republicans.

The legislation, which is backed by Planned Parenthood and the American Civil Liberties Union, would not require schools to teach sex education — but those that do could no longer offer “abstinence-only” curriculum. Instead, classes must focus on a wide range of topics, including consent, birth control and pregnancy, prevention of sexually transmitted disease, “healthy relationships” and sexual orientation. (Worthy News) – Government leaders in China’s third most-populous province held a seminar last month to warn communist officials of the “enormous harm” Christianity poses on China’s security, according to China Aid, which promotes religious freedom within the country.

The seminar in Hebi, Henan, for members of the Communist Party of China encouraged the members to “maintain ‘correct views’ in regards to the religion and avoid being persuaded by its ideology,” China Aid reported.

The seminar was titled, “Christianity’s Enormous Harm on China’s Security.” With an estimated 94 million people, Henan ranks No. 3 in population among China’s provinces. [ Source: Christian Headlines (Read More…) ]

North Korea fires 2 short-range missiles, 5 days after previous launch

(Worthy News) – North Korea fired two short-range missiles on Thursday, according to South Korean military, as the U.S. responded with an intercontinental ballistic missile test of their own just 10 minutes later.

The launch, the second such move in less than a week, occurred around 4:30 p.m. local time from the North’s Sino-ri missile base, the South’s joint chiefs of staff said in a statement. The base is located around 130 miles north of the border with South Korea. The missiles flew 260 and 170 miles respectively, according to South Korean military officials. The U.S. insisted the timing of their own test was entirely coincidental.

The base is believed to operate Rodong short- and medium-range ballistic missiles, according to the New York Times. [ Source: Fox News (Read More…) ]
