Vermont Legislature Passes Bill Protecting Abortion at All Stages of Pregnancy

(Worthy News) – The Vermont legislature passed a bill protecting abortion at all stages of pregnancy for any reason Monday and pushed forward a measure to make abortion a constitutional right.

The bill, which passed both chambers of the state legislature, aims to “recognize as a fundamental right the freedom of reproductive choice and to prohibit public entities from interfering with or restricting the right of an individual to terminate the individual’s pregnancy,” according to Catholic News Agency.

The bill passed the House 106-37 and the Senate 24-6. Vermont Gov. Phil Scott (R.) has expressed support for protecting a woman’s ability to get an abortion, but it is not certain he will sign this bill. [ Source: Washington Free Beacon (Read More…) ]

Trump Seeks Extra $1.6 Billion in NASA Spending Under Goal of Returning to Moon

(Worthy News) – The Trump administration asked Congress on Monday to increase NASA spending next year by an extra $1.6 billion to accommodate the accelerated goal of returning Americans to the surface of the moon by 2024.

The increased funding request, announced by President Donald Trump on Twitter, comes nearly two months after Vice President Mike Pence declared the objective of shortening by four years NASA’s timeline for putting astronauts back on the moon for the first time since 1972.

The proposed increase would bring NASA’s total spending level for the 2020 fiscal year to $22.6 billion. The bulk of the increase is earmarked for research and development for a human lunar landing system, according to a summary provided by NASA. [ Source: VOA News (Read More…) ]

China fires back at the US with higher tariffs on thousands of American products

(Worthy News) – China on Monday said it would retaliate against the US by raising the tariff rates on thousands of American products, days after the US expanded duties on Chinese goods as trade negotiations stalled.

Beijing plans to increase tariffs on $60 billion worth of American imports starting June 1, China’s Ministry of Finance said in a statement. The more than 5,000 items will face duties of 5% to 25%.

On Friday, the US more than doubled the tariff rate on $200 billion worth of Chinese imports, a move meant to penalize Beijing for making reversals on past trade commitments. [ Source: Business Insider (Read More…) ]

More ‘heartbeat’ abortion bills advancing in Midwest and South

(Worthy News) – If a new Mississippi law survives a court challenge, it will be nearly impossible for most pregnant women to get an abortion there.

Or, potentially, in neighboring Louisiana. Or Alabama. Or Georgia.

The Louisiana legislature is halfway toward passing a law — like the ones enacted in Mississippi and Georgia — that will ban abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected, about six weeks into a pregnancy and before many women know they’re pregnant. Alabama is on the cusp of approving an even more restrictive bill. [ Source: Fox News (Read More…) ]

Trump and Xi to meet after defiant China hits U.S. with new tariffs

(Worthy News) – U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday he would meet Chinese President Xi Jinping next month as the trade war between the world’s two largest economies intensified, sending shivers through global markets.

China announced earlier it would impose higher tariffs on a range of U.S. goods, including frozen vegetables and liquefied natural gas, a move that followed Washington’s decision last week to hike its own levies on $200 billion in Chinese imports.

The U.S. Trade Representative’s office said later it planned to hold a public hearing next month on the possibility of imposing duties of up to 25% on a further $300 billion worth of imports from China. Cellphones and laptops would be included in that list but pharmaceuticals would be excluded, the office said. [ Source: Reuters (Read More…) ]
