‘Cover-up’ accusation ends Trump, Democrats’ cease-fire

(Worthy News) – Wednesday’s blow-up between President Trump and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was dramatic on its own, but it was all the more strange because the two sides had just taken a significant step toward cooperation hours before they opened fire on each other.

Just before Mrs. Pelosi accused Mr. Trump of a “cover-up,” his Justice Department and her intelligence committee chairman reached a deal to share more of special counsel Robert Mueller’s work with lawmakers.

Chairman Adam B. Schiff, California Democrat, said Attorney General William Barr is providing material from a dozen aspects of Mr. Mueller’s investigation. In exchange, Mr. Schiff said he would not pursue a contempt of Congress charge or some other punishment right now. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

FBI: Hamas Supporter Arrested for Plotting to Bomb Trump Tower, Aiding Terror Organization

(Worthy News) – Federal authorities arrested a 20-year-old Hamas supporter on Wednesday who they say posted an Instagram poll about whether he should bomb Trump Tower in New York City.

FBI agents charged Jonathan Xie of New Jersey with two counts of attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization, two false statement charges, and a count of transmitting a threat, according to HuffPost. He is scheduled to appear Wednesday afternoon in Newark federal court.

A person who interacted with Xie in an online chat room tipped off the FBI that he wanted to harm Israel supporters. Another user recorded an Instagram Live video Xie posted wearing a black ski mask, in which he said he planned to attend a pro-Israel march and “shoot everybody.” [ Source: Washington Free Beacon (Read More…) ]

Amid Heat Wave, Gaza Incendiary Devices Set Off Nine Fires in Southern Israel

(Worthy News) – Amid a wave of hot and dry weather, nine fires were caused in southern Israel on Wednesday by incendiary devices launched by terrorists in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip.

Israel’s Channel 13 reported that all the blazes occurred in the Eshkol Regional Council near the border. Fire services, the Jewish National Fund and the Israel Nature and Parks Authority worked together to keep the fires contained.

Over the past year, thousands of incendiary devices, mostly balloons fitted with crude firebombs, have been flown into Israel from Gaza. So far, there have been no fatalities as a result, but millions of dollars in damage have been suffered. [ Source: Algemeiner (Read More…) ]

Trump’s Mideast envoy slams UN over ‘Band-Aid’ solutions to Israel-Palestinian conflict

(Worthy News) – The Trump administration’s chief negotiator for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict delivered a blunt message to the United Nations Security Council Wednesday, asserting that it is time “to move past Band-Aid solutions” and claiming that the U.N. agency to support Palestinian refugees had “failed” in its mission.

“The UNRWA [United Nations Relief and Works Agency] model cannot provide to Palestinians what they deserve – a life where they can plan for their future and the future of their children, and one where they know whether schools and health clinics will remain open,” said Jason Greenblatt, who noted that despite American donations of $6 billion to UNRWA since its founding in 1949, the organization was operating in a “permanent crisis mode.”

Greenblatt reiterated that the U.S. is ready to engage with host countries or non-governmental agencies to take over providing UNRWA services to 5.3 million refugees. Greenblatt said the U.S. tried to broach the issue before it cut aid to UNRWA last year. The U.S. reduced its $360 million annual contribution to UNRWA in 2017 to just $60 million in 2018 and nothing this year. [ Source: Fox News (Read More…) ]

Netanyahu reaffirms West Bank annexation, despite ex-security officials’ petition

(Worthy News) – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has doubled down on his commitment to annexing the occupied West Bank, after almost 300 former security officials signed a petition urging him to reconsider.

In a letter to Netanyahu, “Commanders for Israel’s Security” (CIS) – a self-described nonpartisan body of nearly 300 retired security officials – urged the prime minister to hold a public referendum before annexing the West Bank to Israel, claiming the move would endanger security cooperation with the Palestinian Authority (PA) and leave a power vacuum in the territory.

The letter wrote that CIS is “united in the conviction that a two-state agreement with the Palestinians, as part of a regional security framework, is essential for Israel’s security, as well as for its future as the democratic home of the Jewish people”. Scientists Gene-Hack Viruses to Hunt and Kill Super-Strong Bacteria

(Worthy News) – In order to combat superbugs — bacteria that have evolved to survive even the most potent antibiotics — doctors have started to gene-hack viruses to hunt and kill dangerous strains.

Scientists have tried to use CRISPR gene-editing tools to modify viruses to kill off dangerous bacteria and ignore healthy gut bacteria for several years. But now a company called Locus Biosciences tells NPR that it’s developed a mixture of three CRISPR-edited viruses that can infect and kill dangerous bacteria like a “living antibiotic” — a promising new weapon in the fight against antibiotic resistance.

The gene-hacked viral blend can infiltrate bacterial cells and reprogram their DNA, instructing the bacteria’s immune system to destroy the entire cell. [ Source: Futerism (Read More…) ]

Will the Supreme Court take up a Roe v. Wade showdown in 2020?

(Worthy News) – The Supreme Court may well be headed for an election-year fight over abortion rights, but it’s not likely to be a blockbuster showdown over Roe v. Wade.

Courtwatchers anticipate that the justices will agree to take one or more cases related to abortion restrictions in the coming term, drawing attention to the polarizing issue as the 2020 presidential campaign moves into a critical phase.

Further stoking the speculation is the passage of sweeping new abortion limits in several states that are largely designed to trigger a Supreme Court battle, with Republican lawmakers hoping that a high court transformed by President Donald Trump’s judicial picks will bring down the landmark 1973 ruling that guaranteed abortion rights nationwide. Another State Rejects Electoral College as Democrats Advance Effort to Win 2020 Presidential Race

(Worthy News) – The Nevada Senate has approved a bill, pushing to do away with the Electoral College system.

The bill would require electors to cast their electoral votes to the winner of the popular vote.

The US Constitution mandates the Electoral College system, giving every state a chance to be heard in presidential elections. The system was enacted by America’s founding fathers to give smaller states more influence compared to the more highly populated states such as New York, Texas and California.

If the bill is signed by the governor, Nevada would join 15 states in the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact (NPVIC). Several states that have enacted the law include Vermont, Maryland and Illinois. [ Source: CBN News (Read More…) ]
