Amid deadlock in coalition talks, Likud set to push bill to dissolve Knesset

(Worthy News) – Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Yisrael Beytenu leader Avigdor Liberman were locked in a game of political chicken on Monday, with the Likud party poised to take the first step toward triggering new elections, and the former defense minister showing no signs he would soften his demands, join the government, and avert sending Israelis to the polls.

The Likud party said it would bring a proposal to dissolve the Knesset to Israel’s parliament for the first of three votes on Monday afternoon, putting pressure on potential coalition parties to reach an agreement or face another election.

In response, Liberman said he would back the bill in its first reading on Monday afternoon, as the impasse between the right-wing parties showed no sign of waning.

The bill would require two more votes before another election — the second in a matter of months — could be called. [ Source: Times of Israel (Read More…) ]

Nasrallah slams U.S. peace plan, calls for unified resistance

(Worthy News) – Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah said on Saturday that the day was “fast approaching” when a US-backed “plot” would aim to keep Palestinian refugees in Lebanon permanently. He said there was a need to work towards joint “Palestinian-Lebanese” resistance, according to Al-Mayadeen and other sites that followed the speech. He was speaking on the occasion of Liberation Day in Lebanon which commemorates the Israeli withdrawal from south Lebanon in 2000.

Nasrallah slammed the US-backed conference in Manama, Bahrain, in which Washington is expected to roll out part of its peace deal. Nasrallah urged Lebanon and the Palestinians to reject the US plans. He claimed the US was involved in a “plot” to destroy the Palestinian “resistance” and called for participation in “Jerusalem Day” next Friday. His speech shows that Hezbollah is closely following US President Donald Trump’s “deal of the century,” which Nasrallah said is a disaster in the making. He called to boycott the Bahrain conference. US blames Iran for Gulf tanker bombings, Iraq rocket attack

(Worthy News) – A senior Pentagon official on Friday publicly blamed Iran and its proxies for recent tanker bombings near the United Arab Emirates and a rocket attack in Iraq.

Vice Admiral Michael Gilday told Pentagon reporters that the US has “very high confidence” that Iran’s Revolutionary Guard was responsible for the explosions on four tankers, and that Iranian proxies in Iraq fired rockets into Baghdad. He said Iran also tried to deploy modified small boats that were capable of launching cruise missiles.

Gilday, the Joint Staff director, said the latest decision to send 1,500 additional troops to the Middle East will boost surveillance of Iranian forces and their proxies. The additional forces will include more manned and unmanned aircraft, a squadron of fighter jets, a Patriot missile battalion and military engineers. [ Source: Times of Israel (Read More…) ]

Christianity in Iraq is ‘perilously close to extinction’, says Archbishop

(Worthy News) – An Iraqi Archbishop has pleaded with Britain’s Church and political leaders to do more to save the Christian community in Iraq from being wiped out.

Europe at crossroads as far right makes big gains in vote

(Worthy News) – The traditional centrist leaders of Europe have been assailed from the nationalist, anti-immigration far-right and the environmental activist left in polarized, continentwide elections that will force pro-European moderates into forging new alliances.

Right now, the main issue uniting those occupying Europe’s center ground is their refusal to work with far-right groups whose ranks are made up of nationalist parties led by the likes of Matteo Salvini in Italy and Marine Le Pen in France, whose parties celebrated landmark triumphs as results emerged Sunday night and into Monday morning from four days of voting for the 751-seat European Parliament.

Manfred Weber, leader of the center-right EPP, which was forecast to lose 36 seats but remain the largest group in the legislature, said that “from now on those who want to have a strong European Union have to join forces.” He said his group would not cooperate “with any party that doesn’t believe in the future of the European Union.” [ Source: Fox News (Read More…) ]

EU holds ground on Brexit after PM May announces resignation: Commission

(Worthy News) – The European Union’s position on the terms of Britain’s exit from the bloc has not changed despite British Prime Minister Theresa May announcing her June 7 resignation earlier on Friday, Commission spokeswoman Mina Andreeva said.

“(European Commission) President (Jean-Claude) Juncker followed Prime Minister May’s announcement this morning without personal joy,” she told a news briefing.

“The President very much liked and appreciated working with Prime Minister May. He will equally respect and establish working relations with any new prime minister, whomever it may be. Our position on the withdrawal agreement — there is no change to that,” Andreeva said. [ Source: Reuters (Read More…) ]

Traditional parties see losses in European Parliament election

(Worthy News) – The European Union has elected a new Parliament that draws less heavily from the center-right and center-left parties that have traditionally composed the majority.

Returns show that centrists dropped from 53% to 43% of the Parliament, while euroskeptic and green parties made gains. This will be the first time in decades that the center-right European People’s Party and the center-left Socialists and Democrats will not control the majority bloc.

Euroskeptics captured about 24% of the parliament’s 751 seats — an all-time high, but not an enormous bounce from 2014 where they captured about 22% of the seats. Green and pro-environment parties performed well in a number of countries, too. [ Source: Washington Examiner (Read More…) ]

Trump invokes emergency provision to OK Saudi, UAE arms sales

(Worthy News) – President Donald Trump used emergency authority to approve nearly two dozen arms sales to Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and other countries, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told Congress on Friday.

Congressional aides told The Washington Post the deals are worth about $8 billion and include the sale of mortar bombs, missiles, drones, repair and maintenance services, and precision-guided munitions.

Pompeo notified members of Congress, including the Senate foreign relations committee, about Trump’s decision to invoke the emergency authorization under the Arms Export Control Act, which typically requires congressional review. The administration cited malign behavior by Iran as its reasoning for the arms sales. [ Source: UPI (Read More…) ]
