(Worthy News) – Holiday-makers are at risk of picking up and bringing home superbugs, according to a study looking at the spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) worldwide.

Drug-resistant infections are already responsible for some 700,000 deaths globally each year, but it is estimated that this figure could rise to 10 million annually by 2050 if left unchecked.

The report, published by the Center for Disease Dynamics, Economics & Policy (CDDEP), found that tourists are contributing to the spread of AMR across international borders – with as many as 88 percent of unwell tourists returning to the UK from India infected with drug-resistant bacteria. (Worthy News) – The American Civil Liberties Union has asked a federal court to block additional sections of President Donald Trump’s proposed wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Attorneys asked the court to halt construction of a border wall in Southern California and three sections near Tucson, Ariz., late Wednesday. The ACLU, representing the Sierra Club and the Southern Border Communities Coalition, has a good chance of initially prevailing, given the same California court has already suspended the construction of sections in Yuma, Ariz., and El Paso, Texas.

The Justice Department on Wednesday said it would appeal a federal judge‘s decision to halt a $1 billion transfer of Pentagon counterdrug funding to cover expansions of the Yuma and El Paso sectors and asked the court to let construction proceed in the meantime. [ Source: Politico (Read More…) ]

(Worthy News) – Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov and chief Iranian nuclear negotiator Abbas Araqchi discussed the 2015 Nuclear Accord in Tehran on May 29, calling for a meeting of the six countries party to the agreement that would hear Iranian complaints.

Each “shared the hope that the situation will stabilize soon,” with Araqchi promising nevertheless that Iran was “ready for war” with the US if need be.

In early May Iranian leaders gave the remaining European signatories to the deal 60 days to find a workaround to Trump’s economic stranglehold on pain of Iran beginning its nuclear-capable enrichment of uranium again, which the 2015 accord stipulates against.

The US withdrew from the deal, which Trump has called “fatally flawed,” last year, instead opting to foist sanctions on the Islamic Republic designed to bring its oil exports to zero and bring it to the nuclear negotiating table on its knees.

Other detractors of the deal, like Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, have criticized it for failing to address Iran’s extensive nuclear infrastructure, instead relying on guarantees from the Iranians not to enrich uranium beyond 3.76% verified only by the cursory inspections of UN officials.

(Worthy News) – President Donald Trump’s national security adviser warned Iran on Wednesday that any attacks in the Persian Gulf will draw a “very strong response” from the US, taking a hard-line approach with Tehran after his boss only two days earlier said America wasn’t “looking to hurt Iran at all.”

John Bolton’s comments are the latest amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran that have been playing out in the Middle East.

(Worthy News) – Illinois Democrats are attempting to make it the most liberal state in America for abortion, declaring it a right and repealing nearly every limit on the practice.

On Tuesday evening, the Illinois House approved a measure to do away with nearly every abortion limit. The bill will loosen clinic inspection and safety standards, guarantee abortion until birth, and declare abortion a “fundamental right.” House Democrats inserted it into a Senate bill during Memorial Day weekend, rushing the bill through a Sunday committee hearing. The amendment was introduced by Democratic state representative Kelly Cassidy, who had seen a standalone bill stall in committee. She did not respond to request for comment.

Cassidy defended the bill as a response to pro-life legislation passed in Georgia, Alabama, and Missouri. Rep. Avery Bourne, a Republican, took to the Illinois House floor prior to the vote to argue against the bill. [ Source: Washington Free Beacon (Read More…) ]

(Worthy News) – Even though President Donald Trump held fire earlier this month on auto tariffs that have the potential to further roil Europe’s struggling economy, a litany of domestic dilemmas on both sides of the Atlantic threaten to frustrate efforts at a trade pact before they’ve even begun.

Ten months after Trump and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker struck a Rose Garden truce meant to clear the way for negotiations to reduce tariffs on industrial goods and eliminate regulatory hurdles, those talks are showing few signs of going anywhere meaningful.

European officials have blamed a Trump administration that has had little time for dealing with a bureaucracy in Brussels already held in low regard by many in the U.S. president’s orbit. (Worthy News) – Jerusalem will host next month an unprecedented trilateral meeting of top security officials from Israel, Russia and the US, the White House announced on Wednesday.

“In June, United States National Security Adviser Ambassador John Bolton, Israeli National Security Adviser Meir Ben-Shabbat, and Russian Secretary of the Security Council Nikolay Patrushev will meet in Jerusalem, Israel, to discuss regional security issues,” the White House press secretary said in a statement issued minutes before the Knesset voted to disband and to set new elections for September 17.

“We have a lot of things that we want to do,” a visibly upset Netanyahu told reporters. “This is what we want to do, not unnecessary elections… A meeting like has never taken place before in Israel. Never.”

(Worthy News) – The Satanic Temple said it will challenge a recent Supreme Court ruling requiring the burial or cremation of fetal remains, alleging that it violates the group’s religious liberty.

The temple, which does not actually believe in the existence of Satan but vehemently supports the separation of church and state, said the court’s recent order upholding an Indiana law goes against the group’s religious freedom.

(Worthy News) – America has been hit with 500 tornadoes in the last 30 days, with Tuesday breaking a 40-year record by marking the 12th day in a row with at least eight tornado reports, according to US forecasters.

Severe weather has been sweeping across the US Midwest, injuring hundreds and destroying buildings, prompting claims areas of the country have been left “like a war zone”.

(Worthy News) – US President Donald Trump’s senior adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner and Mideast negotiator Jason Greenblatt are expected to meet Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu while in Israel, on the last leg of a regional tour to drum up support for next month’s “economic workshop” in Bahrain.

Greenblatt and Kushner went to Morocco on Tuesday, and Jordan on Wednesday, in an apparent effort to secure those two countries’ backing and participation in the Bahrain meeting. They will be in Israel on Thursday.
