Bill to Legalize Assisted Suicide in Maine Goes to Governor

(Worthy News) – The Maine Legislature voted Tuesday to legalize assisted suicide, with supporters declaring it in line with the state’s tradition of individualism and opponents insisting the practice tempts fate.

The bill now goes to Democratic Gov. Janet Mills, who has 10 days to act on the bill and has not indicated whether she will let it become law. Her office said she has not yet taken a position.

The proposal had failed once in a statewide vote and at least seven previous times in the Legislature. If Mills signs it, Maine would join seven other states, including New Jersey this year, and Washington, D.C., with similar laws, according to the Death With Dignity National Center and the Death With Dignity Political Fund. House Democrats pass ‘Dream Act’ despite likely Senate block

(Worthy News) – The House passed the “Dream and Promise Act,” which provides a pathway to citizenship for 2.5 million people who came to the United States illegally as children as well as foreigners living here under temporary protected status.

The measure passed easily Tuesday in the Democratic-led chamber, winning huge applause in the viewing gallery filled with advocates for the so-called “Dreamers.” But the measure faces certain opposition in the Republican-led Senate.

While the likely measure won’t become law in this Congress, Democrats celebrated the passage of the bill as a fulfillment of a promise they have made for years to “Dreamers” seeking a way to escape deportation. [ Source: Washington Examiner (Read More…) ]

Last week, the US and Israel said there would be a trilateral meeting with Russia this month. Reports emerged that there were discussions about a possible Trump administration suggestion that the US could accept the Assad regime in exchange for a reduction of Iranian forces and influence in Syria. (Worthy News) – More than 430 tiny temblors have rattled Southern California in the past 10 days or so, some just strong enough to be felt by residents, LAist reports.

But the swarm of earthquakes hitting the Inland Empire, stretching from eastern Los Angeles to the Mojave Desert, probably doesn’t indicate a major quake’s on the way, KTLA reported.

“This is just a place where the earth sputters along instead of letting go all at once,” seismologist Lucy Jones wrote on Twitter. [ Source: News Tribune (Read More…) ]
