US hits Iran with new sanctions targeting petrochemicals

(Worthy News) – The Trump administration on Friday hit Iran with new sanctions that target its largest petrochemical company for providing support to the Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The Treasury Department imposed sanctions on the Persian Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company and 39 of its subsidiaries and foreign sales agents. It said the company holds 40 percent of Iran’s petrochemical production capacity and is responsible for 50% of the country’s petrochemical exports. It said the sanctions were the result of the company doing billions of dollars of business with the Guard Corps.

The administration designated the corps a “foreign terrorist organization” last month, the first time it has ever done so for a foreign governmental agency. That means the US can impose sanctions on any company or individual that provides a designated entity with material support. [ Source: Times of Israel (Read More…) ]

US, Russia blame each other in near-collision of warships

(Worthy News) – The US and Russia accused each other of unsafe actions on Friday after an American guided-missile cruiser and a Russian destroyer came within 165 feet (50 meters) of each other in the East China Sea.

The US 7th Fleet said the Russian destroyer put the safety of the USS Chancellorsville and its crew at risk, forcing it to reverse all engines at full throttle to avoid a collision.

“We consider Russia’s actions during this interaction as unsafe and unprofessional and not in accordance with the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea [COLREGS], ‘Rules of the Road,’ and internationally recognized maritime customs,” the 7th Fleet said in a statement. Iran says EU has failed to salvage 2015 nuclear deal – state TV

(Worthy News) – Iran criticized on Monday the European signatories of its 2015 nuclear deal for failing to salvage the pact after President Donald Trump pulled the United States out of it last year and reimposed sanctions, state television reported.

“So far, we have not seen practical and tangible steps from the Europeans to guarantee Iran’s interests … Tehran will not discuss any issue beyond the nuclear deal,” said foreign ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi.

The European signatories to the deal – France, Britain and Germany – have been trying to save it but share the same concerns as the United States over Iran’s ballistic missile development and regional activities. [ Source: Jerusalem Post (Read More…) ]

Temple Mount Sifting Project reboots, aims to salvage ancient temple artifacts

(Worthy News) – Minister of Jerusalem Affairs and Heritage Zeev Elkin played show and tell at the June 2 Cabinet meeting this week. To mark Jerusalem Day, a national holiday celebrating the 1967 reunification of Jerusalem, Elkin brought to the Prime Minister’s Office a rare 2,700-year-old First Temple clay sealing impression, fittingly inscribed with the name of a priestly family of Temple Mount political administrators.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu studied the minuscule artifact and called for a magnifying glass to read the faint paleo-Hebrew script while Elkin explained that he had just arrived from the relaunch of the Temple Mount Sifting project, an “amazing” endeavor that has unearthed huge amounts of fascinating artifacts, he said.

After a two-year hiatus, the project, up and running again since Sunday, is now housed in a previously abandoned tree-filled grove in east Jerusalem, located at the nexus of the Mount of Olives and Hebrew University’s Mount Scopus campus. As in the previous nearby location, paying volunteers sort through a jumble of debris and earth that was illegally excavated by Muslim authorities from the Temple Mount, a site holy to all three monotheistic religions. US envoy says Israel has ‘right’ to annex West Bank land

(Worthy News) – U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman has said the Jewish has the right to annex at least ‘some’ of the West Bank, in comments likely to deepen Palestinian opposition to the long-awaited American peace plan.

The Palestinians have rejected the plan before it has even been unveiled, citing a string of moves by U.S. President Donald Trump that they say show his administration is irredeemably biased.

They are likely to see the latest comments by Friedman as new nail in the coffin of a peace process that is already on life support. [ Source: Ynet News (Read More…) ]
